Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 23, llgft.
Appli-cation lecl I une 17, 1915. Serial No. 34,669.
To all wwm t may concern Be it known that l, `WALTER S. Morir, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clarks Hill, in the county of rTippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Point Protectors, of which therfollowing is a specification,
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hat pin point protectors, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby it can be readily applied to the projecting point of a hat pin or removed therefrom and will prevent injury being done thereby. A
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be easily placed in` position or removed therefrom, which securely grips the hat pin so that there is no danger of the protector becoming accidentally disengaged from thev hat pin, and which is compact in its construction so `that it can be easily handled.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in whichz Figure l is a side elevation of a hat pin point protector constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the same as applied to a hat pin. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through the-hat pin point protector, showing the same as locked in position upon the point of a hat pin. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the plunger or button pushed inwardly to re-4 lease the jaws preparatory to removing the device from the hat pin. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line ls-4 of Fig. 8.
Corresponding and Vlike parts are referred to in the following descriptionv and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Specifically describing the present embodiment of the invention, the numeral l designates a shell or casing which is substantially cylindrical in shape and has a removable head 2 threaded or otherwise fitted in one end thereof, while the opposite end thereof is provided with a wall 3 having a central opening therein within which a. plunger a operates. The head 2 is formed with a central opening 5 adapted to receive the point of a hat pin 6, and a flared mouth 7 is provided at the outer end of the opening 5 to facilitate the insertion of the point of the hat pin 6 through the opening.
A pair of radially disposed spring strips 8 is applied to the inner face of the removable head 2 and secured thereto by means of any suitable fastening means such as the screws 9. These spring strips 8 have the inner ends thereof curved outwardly andV rearwardly to provide opposed jaws l() which are adapted to cooperate with each other to grip the point of a hat pin 6 inserted through the openings 5 and forced between the jaws. lThe faces of the jaws l0 are preferably covered with a layer 11 of rubber or like material so that they will securely grip the hat pin and prevent the olevice from becoming accidentally disengaged from the hat pin.
rThe free ends of the jawsll extend in opposite directions and are loosely connected or hinged as indicated at 12 to the extremities of diverging arms 13 carried by the plunger a and projecting from the base thereof. l/Vhen the plunger d is pressed inwardly, as indicated by Fig. 3, the flared arms 13 act somewhat as toggle levers to force the jaws l0 apart and hold them in inoperative position. The free ends of the jaws l0 are forced toward the head 2 and at the same time sprung apart, and the jaws 10 are thus held in an inoperative, position while the plunger l is pressed inwardly. A suitable stop flange la is provided at the base of the plunger 4 for engagement with the end walls 3 of the shell l to limit the out-ward or return movement of the plunger.
In order to apply the protector to the point of a hat pin, the first two lingers of the hand are placed around the front end of the casing l on opposite sidesrof the neck providing the flared mouth 7, while the plunger or button l is pressed inwardly by the thumb of the handto open the jaws 10 and hold them in inoperative position. The device may then be applied to the point of a hat pin, and as soon as the plunger lis released the jaws 10 will spring into engagement with the hat pin so as to hold the device against accidental disengagement from the hat pin. As long as the protector is in position the point of the hat pin is shielded so that no damage can be done thereby, and the device can be easily removed from the hat pin at any time by first pressing inwardly upon the plunger et and forcing the jaws 10 into inoperative position. It will be observed that the plunger l and jaws 10 are carried by the head 2 so as to be removable from the shell l with the head, thereby enabling the device to be easily assembled or taken apart.
I-Iaving thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hat pin point protector including a tubular shell formed with an end wall having an opening therein, a head applied to the opposite end of the tubular shell and provided with a hat pin point receiving opening, spring strips applied to the inner face of thehead upon opposite sides of the hat pin point receiving opening and having the ends thereof returned to provide opposed jaws arranged for coperation with each other to grip the point of a hat pin, a plunger projecting through the opening of the end wall, and diverging arms carried bythe plunger and loosely connected to the free ends of the jaws so as to force the jaws into inoperative position when the plunger is pressed inwardly.
2. A hat pin point protector including a tubular shell provided with an end wall having an opening therein, a head applied to the opposite end of the tubular shell and formed with a hat pin point receiving opening, radially disposed spring strips secured to the inner face of the head upon opposite sides of the hat pin point receiving opening and having the inner ends thereof returned 1 to provide opposed spring jaws arranged for cooperation with each other to grip the point of a hat pin, plunger projecting through the opening of the end wall, and diverging arms projecting from the plunger and Connected to the free ends of the jaws whereby the jaws are forced apart into inoperative position when the plunger is pressed inwardly.
3. A'hat pin point protector Vincluding a tubular shell provided with an end wall having an opening therein, a removable head applied to the opposite end of the tubular shell and formed with a hat pin point receiving opening, radially disposed spring strips secured to the inner face of the head upon opposite sides of the hat pin point receiving opening` and Vhaving the inner ends thereof returned to provide opposed springjaws arranged for coperation with each other' to grip the point of a hat pin, a plunger slidable within the opening of the end wall and. formed with a stop flange adapted to engage the inner face of the end wall to limit the outward movement of the plunger, and diverging spring arms projecting from l i l the inner ends of the plunger and loosely connected to the free ends of the jaws so that the jaws will be sprung apart when the plunger is pushed inwardly, the plunger and jaws being carried by the head and removable from the shell with the head.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
