IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-AND-PENCIL CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,434, dated August 29, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. CLARK, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented and made an Improvement in Pen-and-Peneil Cases; and the following is declared to be a correct description thereof.
The object of this invention is to provide a lead-holder or magazine in a portion of the case heretofore valueless, and in so doing to prevent the case being lengthened for the introduction' of such magazine.
In the drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal section4 ofthe pen-holder and case, with the pencil partially drawn out; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section at the line x x.
In constructing pen-and-pencil cases of this general character, it has heretofore been usual to provide an exterior tube, a, and an interior tube, b, within which tube b the pencil-case c and pencil d have been introduced, the pencil drawing out at one end, and the pen being projected at the other. These features are retained in my case. The pen-holder i is connected to a segment, o, between the case a and tube b, and occupies one side ofthe case in a portion partitioned oi' by the longitudinal strips or wires s, and on the other side of the case is the magazine for leads. The wires s form the sides of the magazine., and the screw-collar u, at the end of the tube b, forms a cover to close the end of this magazine.
In place of the wires s strips of metal may be employed, either formed upon or attached to the tube b; or to the inside of the case a.
I am aware that pencil-cases have been made with small tubes for holding leads introduced between one cylinder and the other, and covered at their ends by a screw-collar, as seen in Letters Patent No. 67,558. This arrangement, however, did not provide for the introduction of a pen-holder and slide, as in my improvement.
I claim as my invention- The pen-and-pencil case made with the tube b and case a, between which are the longitudinal strips s separating the space into a magazine for leads and a receptacle for the penslide, as set forth.
