provements in Locks, of which the following is a specification;

This device is intended as a lock such as is sometimes termed a safetybrace or bar lock,.wherein a bar is hingedly securedto a permanent fixture and is slidablyenga ged with a door or gate.

' In the development of my-invention I have devised numerous ways for accomplish ing the desirable result, as Ihave found that difl'erent styles ofdoors require a different arrangement of the locking bar. The'bar' as arranged to operate on a sliding door belng found impractical on a swinging door, and

I have found that the lock necessary .to secure a simple sliding door need not be so complicated as one required by a duplex 'door or gate.

All of these arrangements, their construction and method of operation will be fully set forth as the specification progresses and it will be observed that the lock herein set forth may be used not only upon sliding elevator doors but also upon swinging doors or hinged covers or in any place where a strong lock is desired.

The following is what I consider the best means of carrying'out this invention.

The accompanying drawings form part of thisspecification, in which Figure 1 shows in elevation the lock used ona double slide or elevator door. Fig. 2 shows in'plan the device used on a swinging door. Fig. 3 shows in elevation a part removed. Fig. 4 shows in end elevation the part shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 shows a modification ofthe structure set forth in Fig. 2-. In this modification two sliding bars are used. Fig.6

As the devices shown in the separate figures are alternate constructions differing from each other in many essential details, Iwill describe each separately. 7

Referring to Fig. 1, at1,,I have shown the locking bar, a straight flat bar of steel perforated at each end. In operating thislocking bar the handis placed about the grip 8 and the grip is lifted or slid longitudinally upon the rod 4. The door may then be opened by causing it to slide toward the bracket 2. This will cause the-end of the rod 1 and the grip 8 and parts secured thereto to travelupward on the rod 4 until the door is fully opened, andit is my intention that the parts shall be so arranged and conditioned that the rod 1, and grip 8 will only obtain such a position as will cause them to. constantly tend.toaclose the door..

If. it is found desirable to securethe door open or closed a pin may be placed in one of the perforations 13, a series of which are shown in the rod 4.

If the' door be of the construction as shown'in Fig. 1 wherein the parts A and B slide back over the part C, it becomes necessary to place an operating bar to move the part B. I do this by connecting to the lug 10 a rod 1 pivotally connected to the part B at 3 Nowlifting the grip 8 will cause the rod 1 and 1 to be drawn inward and as the parts A and B are movable they will both slide back over the part C, the inner edge of the part B passing under the angle members 5 and 6*.
