IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,412, dated August 22,1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. WELLs, of Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, and in which- Figures 1 and 2 represent a plan and a side view, respectively, of the main plate or device for attaching the several devices shown in the other figures of the drawing to the table of the sewing-machine. Figs. 3 and 4. are like views of the presserplate; Figs. 5 and 6, the same views of the hammer; Figs. 7 and 8, similar views of the baster Figs. 9 and 10, also like views of the presser-plate in a modified form. Fig. 11 is a section of the latter device through the-dotted line as m of Fig. 9.

This invention appertains to improvements in sewing-machine attachments; and it consists of a main plate or device for attaching the other parts hereinafter referred to to the table of the sewing-machine, it being constructed and operating substantially as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the annexed drawing, A A, Figs. 1 and 2, designate the main plate or device for attaching the other parts, to be hereinafter described, to the table of the sewing-machine, it being supplied itself with an opening, a, through which athumb or set-screw is designed to pass to adjust it to the said table when in use. This plate or device is of the curvilinear form shown in the former figure, above alluded to, or of any other desired form, and is supplied with grooves upon its upper surface, formed by so bending or turning the edges of its straight portion that they shall project inwardly a short distance and rest in such a manner as to leave spaces between the said projecting surfaces and the plate itself, as shown at a a in Fig. 1, the object of the groove so formed being for the purpose of separately receiving that portion of the presser-plate hammer, baster, 8200., having a notch, as seen in the figures of the annexed drawing, whereby they may be attached to the said plate A A, and to which plate they are rigidly held when separately applied thereto by means of a pivoted arm, a upon the free end of which is constructed a raised plate, (see Fig. 2,) which terminates into a tooth, entering one of two notches, a a in said plate, and the notch in one of the parts above alluded to when said arm is thrust into its notch. The outer ends of the plates a a of the device A are bent upward at right angles, forming guides 64. a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the object of said guides being to keep the work or article being operated upon in a straight line. B refers to the presser-plate, constructed substantially as shown in Figs..3 and 4, and modifled in form, as shown in Figs. 9, 10, and 11, and having its base-plate, with notch I), connected to its upper projecting and bifurcated portion (which performs the work of gathering, rufflin g, and puifing) by means of an elliptical spring, as shown in Fig. 4, which allows the said plate to accommodate itself to the work being done, and, at the same time, renders it free and pliable when in use. G is the hammer, the base-plate of which, with notch c, is supplied upon its upper side with the hemming device 0, which is of a convoluted conical form, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. 1) refers to the baster, which consists of an upper and lower plate, connected together by means of aflat curvilinear spring, and supplied at their ends with semicircular projections, which clamp the work or article being operated upon when the two edges of the same are brought together preparatory to being sewed together, and thus holds the same, obviating the necessity of tacking them together, as is the course ordinarily pursued for securing the work to permit of its being properly sewed. The baster D is supplied with a notch, 01, in one of its flanged portions, (see Fig..,7,) the object of which, and of each of those mentioned in connection with the presserplate and hammer, being for the purpose stated in connection with the description of the main or attaching-plate A.
