BOX AND CLOSUR LOCKING DEVICE.
Application filed March 19, 1915.
The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a device which, used in connection with a box or receptacle, forms a lock box, in which, when the cover or closure is arranged upon the box, said cover or closure will be locked thereto and thus necessitate the mutilation of the box or cover before access can be had to the contents of the box.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specication, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a box showing my device applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of a closure showing my device applied thereto, parts being broken away to disclose the underlying structure; and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through the box and closure showing the interlocking arrangement.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a box or receptacle 10 and a closure 11 therefor, said closure having sliding engagement with the box 10 and in this instance shown to slide longitudinally of said box, as in the nature of a box adapted to contain a deck of cards, with a sliding closure of a telescopic nature. The locking means in each instance consist of a single piece of material 12 of preferably strip metal which is bent in a substantially rectangular form to provide a side portion 13 and end portions 14. The piece of material is pressed through the edge of the box so that the portions 14 will pass transversely through the edge of the box and the side portion 13 will extend longitudinally of the box and lie against the inner face of the Specification of Letters Patent.

edge, ends15, 16 of the piece of material forming the outer side portions being bent upon the outer face of the edge of the box and then bent away from said outer face, with the end 15 formed in a U-shape and the end l1o bent around to have its extremity lie between the portions 17 and 18 forming the U-shaped part yof the end 15 so that the U-shaped part will form a'projection 19 f which is an extension of the part on the cover. The same construction described is duplicated on the closure 11 except that the projection 20 similar to the projection 19 which is an extension of the part 2O on the box and as shown, a pair of the locking devices mentioned is provided on each edge of the box and each edge of the closure.
Now when the box has been filled with the desired contents the closure is slid on to the box, with the closure sliding downwardly upon the box. Now as the two opposed projections pass each other, it will be seen that the projection on the closure will spring past and toward said closure and the proj ec tion on the box will spring past and toward the closure so that after the box and closure have been locked and it is endeavored to separate the same the projections will interlock with each other and prevent removal of the closure except by mutilation of the closure to an extent which will permit of relatively interlocking the projections fromy each other. A
From the foregoing description it'will be seen that the locking devices on the box and closure arepthe same in each instance, but are merely reversed, with the locking projection on the box extending in an oppo- Patented May 16, 1916'.
end extending between the sides of the U- v l tions extending through a Wall of said closure or box, With the ends of said piece of metal lying outside of the Wall, one end bent to form a U-shaped portion and the other end bent around to lie between the sides oi' the vU-shaped portion and be wedged therein to form a projection, with the projection of one of the members exe tending in one direction and thel projection ofthe other member extending in the other direction, whereby when saidV closure and box are associated With each other the said' projections Will interlock and prevent relative movement of the closure and box.
2. A means for locking a closure to a. box comprising a member applied to the closure and a member applied to the box, each of said members consisting of a single piece of spring-like strip metal having portions extendingthrough a..Wal1 of said closure and box with the ends of said piece of metal lyingV outside of the Wall, one end being engaged With the other end of the metal to prevent relative movement of the closure and box.
In testimony whereof I affix niy'signature in presence of two Witnesses.
