EGG-CANDLING DEVICE.
Application led September 3, 1915.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN D. LAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springeld, in the county of Washington and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful lImprovements in EggCandling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an egg candling device whereby the condition of an egg may be determined by placing the same in the end of a tube through which is reflected a bright light from a lamp contained within the device.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described with a lamp housing having an adjustable section whereby, through movement of said section a light tube carried thereby may be moved toward or away from a lamp located within the housing.
A still further object of the invention is to provide each house section of the egg candling device with a light tube constructed in such a manner as to enable a portion of the lamp to be positioned between the tubes when the movable house section is in a normal position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a deflector which is supported by the lamp above the meeting ends of the light tube and deflects the greater portion of the rays of light from the lamp which would otherwise illuminate the upper portions of the lamp housing into the lamp tubes.
A still further object is to provide a hood which may be removably connected with the base of the egg candling device and loosely surround a portion of the adjustable house section, in such a manner as not to interfere with the adjustment of said section.
Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise detail construction therein shown, as changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.

rllhe numeral 1 designates the improved egg candling device as an entirety which comprises a base l, a lamp housing 2, and a removable hood 3.
The base `l which is of rectangular shape has extending longitudinally thereof its entirev length a slot l and mounted upon one end of the housing is a section of the lamp housing 2, as indicated at 5. The above mentioned section which will be described as the fixed section of the housing is designated by .the numeral G, and is secured to the base 1 in any suitable manner.
Rigidly secured tothe rear wall of the fxedsection of the lamp housing is a light tube `7 the free end of which is recessed, as at 8, to enable a portion of a chimney upon a lamp 9 supported by the base 1 to be partially encircled by the recessed end of the light tube. The light tube 7 is provided with a series of apertures 10 in one of which ispositioned a reflector 11.
Slidable longitudinally of the base 1 through its connection with the slot 4e therein is the adjustable house section 12, said section being provided with atapering light tube 13 one end of which extends within the house section 12 and the remaining end of said tube projects beyond the front wall of said housing. The end of the light tube which projects within the house section 12 is recessed similar to the free end of the light tube 7 so that when the adjustable house section is moved to a normal position, or to a position in which the house sections inclose the lamp 9 the remaining portion of the lamp chimney opposite that located in the tube 7 is positioned within the recessed portion of the light tube 13.
The base 1 is provided at opposite sides thereof with alined apertures 1/1 in which is mounted a U-shaped member to which is connected the hood 3, said hood loosely surrounding the adjustable house section 12 near the exterior end of the light tube 13. The chimney on the lamp 9 supports a deflector 18 above the meeting ends of the tubes 7 and 13.
When it is desired to ascertain the condition of the contents of the egg shell the lamp 5 now be seen that the reflector in the light tube 7 directs the rays of light from the flame of the lamp throughthe light tube 13 and that an egg positioned in theend of said tube which is located exteriorly of the lamp housing will be renderedsuliiciently translucenttoenable the contents of the-shell to be inspected as the egg is rotated by the operator of the device.
It will be seen that by adjusting the adjustable house sectionfl-Q toward or away from the lamp the light 'tubefoarried thereby reflects a greater or less amount of light through the tube according to its position thus enabling an egg to be inspected which has a Very thick shell or dense yoke.
It will also be noted that by making the house section 12 yadjustable accessz'may be easily gained to thev lamp at 'allftimes for any purpose which vmay be found necessary while `the. device is A'in use, -furthermore, when the hood is placed over the head of the operator and the end of the egg inserted in the end of the light tube 13 all light other thanthat which passes through the egg is excluded.
From the foregoing statement taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it is apparent that an egg candling device has been' provided, which is simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture and highly efficient in use.
Having thus described the invention what is;clai1ned as new is A slotted base, a house section xed to said base andfprovided with a light tube, a reflector located in said tube, a second house section movable upon said :base and provided With a light tube extending within and beyond the same, a lamp interposed between said tubes and inclosed by said house sectionswhen in normal position, and a hood supported upon said base in advance of the fixed house section.
