To all wtom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOLGERV. CLAUsEN, a subject of the King of Denmark, and a resident of Bucaramanga, Santander, Republic of Colombia, South America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Caps, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to bottle caps or closures, and the main object thereof is to provide a substitute for the well known crown stopper or cap whereby the waste of caps by being entirely removed from the bottle and thrown away, as in the said crown cap, is avoided, my device consistn ing of a body member in permanent connection with the bottle, and closure disks in separable connection with said body member, said disks being of different types and capable of repeated use.
My invention is also a substitute for the class of bottles having a ball closure imprisoned within the neck of the bottle and adapted to be moved into closure position by gravity and to be held in such position by the pressure of the contents, such as carbonated drinks, but with my closure no special bottle construction is necessary, as no ball isemployed.
My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which like characters refer to like parts in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section taken through a bottle provided with my closure or cap and one form of disks which I employ; Fig. 2 is a similar view but showing the method of opening the same, or of returning the disk into closure position; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a detached view of the disk shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the cap in connection with another form of closure disks which I employ; and Fig. 6 is a detached, bottom, plan view of this disk.
In the drawings forming a part of this application I have shown a bottle 7 having the usual bead 8 on the upper edge of the neck thereof with which is engaged a metal cap 9 having its edge turned inwardly beneath the bead 8, as in the crown cap referred to, said cap 9 having an opening 10 therethrough of a diameter approximating the internal diameter of the neck of the Specification of Letters Patent.

bottle, and this cap is in permanent connection with the bottle and is not designed ever to be removed therefrom.
Interposed between the top of the bottle and the cap 9 is a resilient washer 11, as of rubber or the like, provided with an opening 12 therethrough of less diameter than the opening 10 through the cap, whereby a shoulder is presented to the disks to be described which yields to pressure in some degree. Imprisoned within the bottle by virtue of its greater diameter than the opening 12 is a closure disk 13, preferably segmental in cross section, which carries a post 14 on its concaved side and which, in turn, carries a fin-tail 15 at its end to serve as a rudder when the disk moves from one end of the bottle to the other in a manner and for a reason later described. As shown in Figs. 1 to L1, inclusive, I also provide a closure disk 16 of less diameter than the opening 10 in the cap `9 but having two diametrically arranged ears 17 thereon, one of which is adapted to be forced between the cap and washer, as shown in Fig. 2, the disk 16 being then forced against the yielding resistance of the washer until the other ear may be forced between the cap and washer into the position shown in Fig. 1; the disk is dished to provide an inclined surface 18 bearing on the washer, the rim 19 outside of the dished portion being larger in diameter than the diameter of the opening 12 of said washer, whereby a tight closure results which may be easily and quickly connected with and detached from the cap.
1When the bottles are filled they are inverted, either during the filling operation or thereafter, and this allows the disk 13 to fall to its seat against the washer 11 by gravity, the fin-tail 15 insuring its position with its convex side in contact with the washer, the pressure of the contents of the bottle, as with carbonated beverages, maintaining this disk in this position, and the disk 16 may or may not be installed at the time of filling; in the event of such double use of the disks I will either thicken the washer or lessen the depth of either or both of the disks, the illustration being made to show the use of only one disk at one time, but this merely a matter of degree, as will be apparent. IVhen it is desired to open the bottle to pour all or a part of the contents therefrom, the disk 16 is removed,

if employed with the disk 13, by forcing it to one side until one of the ears 17 clears the edge of the opening in the cap 9, after which the disk 13 is forced away from its seat to permit lthe excess pressure in the bottle to escape, this being done with the finger or with a pencil or the like; after the disk 1G has been forced from its seat it drops by gravity to the bottoml of the bottle, where it remains until the bottle is to be reiilled, the curvature of the bottle at its shoulder between body and neck preventing it from reaching the washer l1 in the normal pouring of the contents from the bottle. If the disk 1G is originally provided with the bottle it may now be forced intoits closure position if the contents of .the bottle are not exhausted, thus serving o preserve the contents from contamination nd excluding the air from the bottle, and if the disk 16 is not so provided with the bottle as a component part thereof, a supply thereof may be held in reserve by the consumer, probably furnished gratis by the bottler of the bottle contents. It will thus be seen that my cap is in permanent connection with the bottle, and that it is adapted to receive either or both of the closure disks, one of said disks being an air-seal for the bottles as vended, and the other being intended more for a temporary closure to protect unused portions-of the bottle contents. While I have shown and described the closure 13 as a disk, it may be made of any desired shape provided that it operates in the manner described.
Having 'fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
AThe combination with la bottle having a fiat yupper end, of a resilient washer arranged on said top, `a cap holding said washer in place, said washer and cap having an opening therethrough,-a dished disk -held against `the inner side of said lWasher -by the pressure of the contents of said bottle, and a 'iin-tail suspended from the center of the concave surface ofsaid disk to guide the same `toward its seat While filling the bottle.
