To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, PATRICK J. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall- Seats, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in disappearing seats, which are concealed from view, and are in a position out of the way when not in use.

The invention has for its principal objects to provide a seat adapted to be built into the wall of a building and of a width to fit between the studding, without removing or cutting the same; to provide a structure which is capable of installation within the partition wall of a building by simply removing a portion of the lath and plaster between the studding; to provide a structure wherein the seat when in a position to be occupied is provided with a suitable back or rest formed by the door which closes the opening in which the seat is adapted to be concealed when not in use.

My invention is adapted for use particularly in alcoves where the space is limited and where it is desired to install a telephone; in bath rooms where the space is limited and where a chair of the usual type would require too great a space when not occupied, and, in fact, in any place where it is desirable to have a seat of a type which is capable, when not in use, of being easily concealed or positioned in an out of the way splace.

With the ZLbOWE mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Referring more particularly to the drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numerals 1 indicate suitable spaced uprights, connected at the top and bottom of their front edge by the transverse members 2 and 3, which are seated in the front edges of the uprights.

The ends of the members 2 and 3 project beyond the uprights 1 for a slight distance, and the portion of the lower member 3 between the uprights projects a slight distance beyond the front edge of the uprights, as in the drawings. A top member 4 extends between the inner surface of the uprights 1, and suitable strips 5 extend longitudinally of the inner surface of the uprights a slight distance from the rear edge thereof, and to said strips are secured the members 6 forming the back. A transverse member 7 is set in the rear edge of the uprights and the lower edge thereof is in a plane slightly above the upper edge of the front lower member 3 and the two provide a support for the seat when the same is in its lowered position, as in dotted lines Fig. 3.

The uprights, top, bottom and back members provide a compartment or chamber 7, for the reception of the seat when the same is in its folded position.

A seat 8 is pivotally mounted between the uprights 1. and the same is carried by suitable pivot pins 9, one of which. extends through each upright. The seat when in its extended position will contact at its rear edge with the underside of the rear transverse member 7 and will rest on the upper edge of the forward lower member 8 and will be thus supported at two points spaced from each other and will be adaptedto lie in a horizontal position.

When in position in the wall, the structure forming the compartment or chamber. is adapted to be inserted at the proper height between two pieces of studding l0. and the ends 11 of the members 2 and 3 are adapted to be secured to the studding preferably by being nailed.

When the cover 16 is in its lowered position, as in Fig. 2, and in full lines Fig. 3, a space 18 is provided between the lower edge of the cover and the upper surface of the lower transverse member 3 and through said space access may be had to the finger recess 19 formed on the inner surface of the cover.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is- 1. In combination with the wall supports of a building, a seat structure for positioning between adjacent members of the same, and comprising spaced uprights, top and bottom members connecting said uprights and for securing the said wall supports, a back wall secured to said uprights and providing with the uprights and said top and bottom members a chamber, a seat pivotally mounted between said uprights and capable of pivotal movement downwardly to a horizontal position, means for limiting the downward movement of said seat, and a cover for said chamber hinged at its upper end and providing a back for said seat when the same is in its horizontal position.

A seat cabinet comprising spaced uprights, top and bottom members connecting the same, a back member, said uprights, top, bottom and back member forming a cabinet, a seat pivotally 'mounted between said uprights and capable of reception within said cabinet, said seatalso capable of pivotal movement downwardly to a substantially horizontal position, means for limiting the downward movement of said seat, and a cover for said cabinet, said cover cooperating with said seat when thesame is in its substantially horizontal position. for providing an inclined back therefor.
