To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, STEPHEN Tnunovloi-i, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Chicago, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Envelops, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in safetyenvelops.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a foldable envelop designed to be sold as a blank form and to be folded in its enveloping formation by the user.

It is also designed in the present device to provide an envelop blank suitably scored and gummed whereby the user may readily fold the same around the missive to be sent, the different portions of the envelop being securely adhered together and to the missive during the forming or folding operation.

The invention therefore contemplates the provision of a foldable envelop blank as an article of manufacture and sale, the same having terminal side flaps adapted to be folded and gummed together and then so positioned as to overlie and adhere to the missive to be contained in the envelop, the end flap being then interengaged with the terminal body-portion to which the said terminal side flaps are attached while medial side flaps are then overlappingly ,adhered together inwardly of the said end flap.

WVith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:Figure 1 is a developed or open view of the present envelop blank. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof illustrating the first step in folding the envelop, the terminal side flaps being adhered together. Fig. 8 is a similar view illustrating the next step in forming the device with the terminal body-portion folded upon the main body-portion. Fig. 4 shows a further step in forming the envelop and illustrating the end flap arranged in its interlocking position, the side wings being broken away, and, Fig. 5 shows the Specification of Letters Patent.

final step in the construction of the envelop with the medial side flaps in their interengaging folded locked position.

It being understood that the present device is a form of envelop designed for imparting great security to the missive contained therein and to prevent the unauthorized removal thereof or tampering therewith without such act becoming plainly apparent to the receiver, it is designed to furnish theconsumer with an envelop blank envelop formation as shown in Fig. 5, the

said blank being formed of any desirable material such as paper or fabric which may be readily bent in folding the blank. The said envelop-blank 10-has a rectangular main body 11 to which a terminal body 12 is attached at one end thereof, a scored line 13 being arranged between the said main and terminal bodies. Terminal side flaps 14 and 15 are carried by the opposite lateral sides of the terminal body 12, each being separated from the said terminal body by means of a scoring 16. The terminal side 15 has its outer one-half part 17 gummed as at 18 upon one side thereof while an eyelet-shaped perforation 19 is providedthrough the terminal side 14. The terminal sides 14 and 15 are adapted to befolded inwardly upon the scored lines 16 and so as to overlap each other with the adhesive portion 17 lying undermost and adhesively attached to the terminal side 14 as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The missive, not shown, is then placed upon the main body 11 and the terminal side flaps and body folded inwardly thereof and into engagement therewith as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, it being understood that some of the adhesive matter from the side portion 17 is made to adhere to the missive through the aforementioned perforation 19.

An endflap or broad tongue 20 is attached flap 20 are arranged inwardly of the slot 22 and are suitably gummed while the portions 24 of the said end flap lying outwardly of the said slot are conveXed being also suitably gummed and being adapted to fold in wardly upon the said end flap 20 at the scored lines 25.

The terminal body 12 has a cutaway portion 26 at a point opposite the main body 11 forming a relatively small tongue 27 centrally of the outer side of said terminal body, the tongue 27 being provided with an adhesive 28 upon its inner face and being arranged with outwardly converging perforations 29. The convex side portions or lips 24 of the end flap 20 are folded inwardly as shown in Fig. 3 and the said flap then being upon the line 20 and arranged with the small tongue 27 positioned through the slot 22, the end flap 20 is then projected. inwardly to its flattened folded position beneath the terminal body edge 26 and through the side slits 30 thereof. It will be understood that while the terminal sides 14 and 15 are securely adhered together and attached to the missive in the manner heretofore described, the adhesive portions 23, 24 and 28 are slightly moistened prior to being assembled but are not secured to the adjacent portions by the application of pressure adjacent the gummed surfaces until after all of the members are properly folded. Fig. 4 illustrates the arrangement of the elements when positioned as just described and after some instrument, such as a paper knife not shown, has been inserted beneath the end flap 20 and the lip 24 spread outwardly in their flattened positions. Medial side flaps or wings 31 are attached to opposite sides of the main body 11 upon the scored lines 32, each of the said wings having a terminal reduced portion 33, one of which is provided with an adhesive 34 upon its inner side and also has a transversely positioned eyelet 35 therethrough. The said wings 31 have lateral curved portions 36 provided with an adhesive 37 marginally positioned thereon.

The final step in the formation of-the envelop is the folding of the wings 31 upon the scorings 32 and then thrusting the wing portions 33 beneath the opposite edges of the end flap 20 and with the gummed. surface 34 of one of the wings overlapping the adjacent wing 31 while the marginal adhesive portions 37 overlie the outer edges of the terminal body 12 as shown in Fig. 5, it being understood that the folded envelop is then submitted to pressure for securely adhering the respective gummed portions to the adjacent surfaces and for flattening the entire envelop giving the same a more compact and finished appearance.

It will be seen that a secure enveloping container is thus provided for the missive .5 contactingly arranged between the adjacent faces of the main body 11 and the terminal side flaps 14 and 15 and that the missive is secured against lateral shifting or displacement by means of the adhesive projecting through the perforation 19. The perforations 29 and 35 also allow the adjacently positioned adhesive to project there through for adhering to the adjacent surfaces of the envelop parts, all of which is designed to render the closed envelop incapable of being opened without severing or mutilating some portion of the blank 10. It is further noted that during the formation of the envelop, it is essential that the adhesive 28 upon the tongue 27 is not allowed to (adhere to any adjacently arranged member until the final step in the assembling operation has been performed, it being preferable that the said tongue 27 be adhesively attached to the overlapped wings 31 beneath the end flap 21, and that some of the adhesive 28 project or ooze through the openings 29 of the tongue 27 and adhere to the inner face of the end flap 20, it being also noted that the perforations 19 and 35 will be substantially superposed in alinement with each other in the complete envelop and arranged between the planes of the tongue perforations 29, as best illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings.

ll hile the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

WVhat I claim as new is 1. A safety envelop formed of a foldable blank having main and terminal body-portions, attachable terminal side flaps upon the side terminal body, attachable side wings upon the said main body, the said terminal body having a cut-away outer portion forming a centrally arranged tongue thereon and opposite side slits, and an end flap at the outer edge of the said main body positioned through the said slits and having a slot through which the said tongue extends in overlying relationwith respect to the said side wings when the envelop is in its finished folded position. j

2. An envelop comprising a terminal body having one edge thereof cut-away forming a central tongue and side receiving slits, an adhesive upon one face of the said tongue, the said tongue being provided with outwardly converging perforations therethrough, side flaps foldingly carried by the opposite edges of the said terminal body adhesively arranged in overlapping position when the envelop is folded, the overlapping one of the said flaps being provided with an adhesive receiving perforation, a body foldingly attached to the inner edge of the said terminal body, and an end flap foldingly carried by the main body opposite the said terminal body and having. a transversely-arranged receiving slot for the said flap. i

An envelop comprising a terminal body having one edge thereof cut-away forming a central tongue and side receiving slits, an adhesive upon one face of the said tongue, the said tongue being provided with outwardly converging perforations therethrough, side flaps foldingly carried by the opposite edges of the said terminal body and arranged in overlapping position when the envelop is folded, the outwardly positioned one of the said flaps being provided with an adhesive receiving perforation, a main body foldingly attached to the inner edge of the said terminal body, an end flap foldingly carried by the main body opposite the said terminal body and having a transversely-arranged receiving slot for the said tongue, the said end flap also having foldable convex gummed side lips, the end flap being arranged with its opposite edges positioned through the said slits and with the said lips inwardly of the said terminal body when the envelop is assembled, and side wings carried by the said main body.

4. An envelop comprising a terminal body having one edge thereof cut-away forming a central tongue and side receiving slits, an adhesive upon one face of the said tongue, the said tongue being provided with outwardly converging perforations therethrough, side flaps foldingly carried by the opposite edges of the said terminal body and arranged in overlapping position when the envelop is folded, the outwardly positioned one of the said flaps being provided with an adhesive receiving perforation, a main body foldingly attached to the inner edge of the said terminal body, an end flap foldingly carried by'the main body opposite the said terminal body and having a transversely-arranged receiving slot for the said tongue, the said end flap also having foldable convex gummed side lips, the end flap being arranged with its opposite edges positioned through the said slits and with the said lips inwardly of the said terminal body when the envelop is assembled, side wings carried by the said main body, side wings foldably carried by the opposite edges of the said main body and having terminal reduced portions adhesively connected together and arranged inwardly of the said end flap and tongue and outwardly of the said side flaps when the envelop is folded, one of the said wings being provided with an adhesive receiving perforation positioned in substantial alinement with the said side flap perforation and in a plane intermediate the said tongue perforations when the envelop is in its closed folded position.
