Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1916.
' A pplicationfiledAugust 1c, 1915. Serial a... 45,693.
Z '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT ORR, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Hawkesbury, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'- to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to steam engines.
In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation, and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application.
Throughout the several figures of the drawings like reference characters designate the same parts.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of the invention as used, with the cylinder partly broken away to show the interior construction; and Fig. 2 is a reverse side view of the cylinder.
The main objects of the invention are to provide a compactand eflicient steam engine of simple construction and operation, and which can be produced at a relatively low cost.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 designates a fixedly secured base plate provided with brackets 2 which support the cylinder 3. Standards 4 are provided a short distance from the brackets 2 and carry frames 5 in each of which is mounted a slidable block 6 in alinement with the end of the cylinder. Each of the blocks 6 is connected at its inner end to the outer end of the piston rods 7 and 7 a on the inner end of which is secured a piston 8 and 8 opera tive in the cylinder.
A rod 9 has its inner end pivotally connected to the outer end of one of the blocks 6 and its outer end pivotally connected to the lower end of a lever 10 rotatably mounted on upright 11 carried by the base plate. The upper end of lever 10 is pivoted to one end of a beam 12 the other end of which is pivotally connected to the other block 6 by means of a lug 6 integral therewith; the last mentioned block being con nected by a pitman 13 to a drive wheel 14: carried by a post 15 of the base plate 1.
The cylinder 3 is provided, on one side,
with inlet openings 16 and 17 at one end and the center thereof respectively, and exhaust openings 18 and 19 a short distance from the end and center of the cylinder respectively. Opposite inlet 16 there is a bore through the side of the cylinder which communicates with a similar bore at the other end of the cylinder by a connecting pipe 20 mounted in a suitable groove in the outer face of the cylinder and connected to the two side bores. Similarly a bore is provided through the other side of the cylinder opposite, but a little bit above, the exhaust opening 19 and communicates with a bore located an equal distance on the other side of the longitudinal center of the cylinder by means of a pipe 21. Inlet and exhaust pipes communicating with a steam boiler or other suitable source of supply of pressure fluid, and with the atmosphere, and provided with controlling valves operative in any well known and suitable manner, are, of course, connected to the inlet and exhaust openings.
The operation is as follows: When the pistons 8 and 8 are at the ends of the cylinder the inlet 16 is open. This admits pressure fluid in back of piston 8 and, by means of pipe 20, piston 8. The pressure fluid forces the pistons toward each other until they are brought close together at the center of the cylinder, when the exhaust 19 is opened and permits the fluid to escape from behind piston 8 and, by means of pipe 21, piston 8. After the exhaust has been completed the inlet 17 is opened. This admits pressure fluid between the pistons which forces them apart until they near the ends of the cylinder, when exhaust 18 is opened and permits the pressure fluid to escape. When this has been completed the pressure fluid is admitted behind the pistons again, the several operations described being repeated in regular order.. By. having one inlet at the end of the cylinder and a pipe leading therefrom to the other end of the cylinder, and the other inlet at the center of the cylinder, an equal. pressure on both pistons is assured which is of prime importance in an apparatus of this character. The motion of piston 8 is communicated directly to the block 6 connected to the wheel 14, and indirectly to the same block by means of rod 9, lever 10, and beam 11, so that a compound leverage is exercised on the one block imparting to the same a great driving force. The driving wheel 1% may, of course, be connected to a machine or mechanism to be operated therefrom by any suitable means.
It is thought that the construction, operation, and use of the invention will be clear from the preceding detailed description.
Changes may be made in the construction, arrangement, and disposition of the several parts of the invention within the limits of the claims, without in any way departing from the field and scope of the same, and it is meant to include all such Within this application wherein only a preferred form has been disclosed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A steam engine comprising, a cylinder, oppositely reciprocable pistons slidably mounted therein, piston rods connected thereto, brackets mounted adjacent the ends of said cylinder, blocks slidably mounted therein, piston rods connecting said blocks and said pistons, a vertically rocking lever,
a rod connecting the lower arm of said lever with the block nearest thereto, a rod extending the full length of said engine and connecting the other arm of said lever with the block at the opposite end of the engine, a
fly wheel, and a pitman connecting said fly wheel with the block nearest thereto.
2. A steam engine comprising, a cylinder, oppositely reciprocable pistons slidably mounted therein, means for simultaneously admitting steam to the opposite faces of said pistons to actuate the same, means for simultaneously exhausting steam from opposite faces of said pistons as they reach the end of their stroke, piston rods connected thereto, brackets mounted adjacent the ends of said cylinder, blocks slidably mounted therein, piston rods connecting said blocks and said pistons, a vertically rocking lever,
a rod connecting the lower arm of said lever with the block nearest thereto, a rod extending the full length of said engine and connecting the other arm of said lever with the block at the opposite end of the engine, a fly wheel, and a pitman connecting said fly wheel with the block nearest thereto.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
