HARRY ELWOOD KEENE, OF NORTHUMBERLAND, PENNSYLVANIA.
TABLE.
Application filed March 9, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY ELwooD KEENE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northumberland, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to furniture, and more particularly to tables for use on seagoing vessels, such as ocean liners and the like, and an object of the invention is to provide a table which, regardless of the rolling of the ship, will at all times remain in a position whereby the table body will lie in a horizontal plane.
The invention contemplates, among other features, the provision of a table which is preferably adapted for use on ocean lines to provide table bodies and chair supporting claws which will be at all times kept in horizontal planes regardless of the rolling of the ship and the inclination of the floor or deck of the ship.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a ship, showing the table applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a ship 10 having the usual main floor or deck 11. Rigidly secured to the floor 11 and spanning an opening 12 therein is a seat or socket 13 for an upright 14 extending upwardly above the floor 11, said upright carrying an auxiliary floor 15 and a table top 16, with said auxiliary floor and table top rigid upon the upright, the table top being in superposed relation to the auxiliary floor, with suitable seats 17 secured to supporting members 18 attached to and projecting upwardly from the auxiliary floor so that the seats will be disposed adjacent to and around the table top 16.
Secured to the lower end of the upright 14 is the upper bifurcated end of a depending supporting member 19 which is in the Specification of Letters Patent.

nature of a continuation of the upright 14 and passes through the opening 12, said member 19 being longer than the upright 14 and carrying a lower auxiliary floor 20 and a superposed lower auxiliary table top 21, said auxiliary floor 20 and table top 21 lying beneath the main floor 11 of the ship. Suitable seats 22 are supported upon the lower auxiliary floor 20 in the same manner as the seats 17, and it will be clearly seen that the upper table top and floor and the lower table top and floor carried by the upright and depending supporting member can all swing relatively to the main floor 11 of the ship. Furthermore, by having the depending supporting member of greater length than the upright 14 and the weight of the lower floor and table top on the lower end of the depending member, it will be apparent that the lower auxiliary floor and table top will act as weights for the entire structure to balance the same and maintain the table tops and auxiliary floors in horizontal planes so that the rolling of the ship will not cause the table tops to tilt but will at all times lie in horizontal planes so that dishes or any other articles thereon will not slide therefrom.
The auxiliary floor 15 and which lies immediately above the floor 11 is connected .with the floor 11 through the medium of connecting members 23 of a resilient nature, each of which consists of a contractile spring 24 terminating at its ends in bolts 25, with one bolt of each member passing through the auxiliary floor 15 and the other bolt of each member passing through the main floor 11.
From the foregoing description it will be clearly seen that the rolling of the ship will not materially affect the table tops and auxiliary floors described and which are so pivoted and supported upon the main floor through the medium of the seat 13, to maintain the auxiliary floors and table tops in horizontal planes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a device of the kind described, in combination, a floor having an opening, a socket member spanning said opening and formed with a depression, an upright having a rounded bottom disposed in said depression,
a second upright, an upper bifurcated end wardly toward and secured to one of said formed on said second upright, straddling platforms. 10 said socket member and being secured to said In testimony whereof I affix my signature first upright, said bifurcated portion proin presence of two Witnesses.

form carried by each of said uprights, Witnesses: spaced from the floor, and a spring secured E. M. SNAVELY, to said floor at one end and extending up- R. P. RAYMOND.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
