Description

NHra'RMrmH. Quim' Improved Hay Derrick. 4
No. 118,270] Patented Aug. 22,1871.
PATENT CFFICE.
HERMAN H. QUINT, OF BROOKFIELD, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAY-ELEVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,270, dated August 22, 1871.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN H. QUINT, of Brookfield, county of Linn and State of Missouri, have invented certain Improvements in Hay-Derricks, of which t-he following is a specification:
The iirst part of my invention relates to the substitution of one short brace for the one in use as one of the four supports to the upright pivot-post of hay-derricks the object of this part of my invention bein g a greater lateral movement ofthe crane to facilitate lifting at greater distan ces from the stack. The second part of my invention relates to the substitution of a longer movable brace for hoisting the crane and changing the location of its foot so as to cause the lateral motion of the crane to commence onlywhen the fork has been elevated to the crane, and to lessen the power required for such lateral motion, and also to obtain a greater elevation for the lift.
The figure is a side elevation of a hay-derrick embodying my invention.
J J are the runners, I I and H the cross-bars, G G the hounds, and F the tongue of the portable derrick-i'ra me. C is the pivot-post, supported by the braces E E E and D. The crane B, pivoted with the vertical and transverse pivot M, also connected with the frame by the movable brace A, attached by ring-staples to the frame at N, is moved by ahorse attached to the rope L at O, the rope runnin g from the hay-fork at P through the pulleys at K K K, and the lateral movement commencing as soon as the fork reaches the crane at Q. The brace I) being shortened, as shown in the figure, allows the crane-brace A and the crane B to pass further around than in other machines, and thus to lift at greater distance from the place of deposit or stack. The crane-brace A being lengthened, and the foot located at N brings the crane into such a position With reference to the point of draft K on the runner that the fork with its load will be drawn entirely up to Q before the crane comm ences to move, and, the foot being removed nearer to the plane of the crane B than in machines heretofore7 the power requisite to start the crane upon its lateral movement is greatly lessened; also, the increased length of the brace gives an increased altitude to the lifting of the derrick and greatly enhances its usefulness for stacking purposes.
I claim as my invention- The device, as a hay-elevator, embodying the construction contemplated and set forth in the accompanying drawing and description.
