To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. GOLD- sMrrH, of Old Orchard, in the county of York and State of Maine, a citizen of the United States, have invented'- a new and useful Improvement in Spindles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The present invention relates `to spindles for spinning machines and which are especially adapted for spoolers.
The essential object of the invention is to so construct the usual parts of the spindle as to perform additional functions to those ordinarily performed with resulting advan-v tages, pertaining especially toV lubrication and also to the manipulation or removal of the spindle blade and attached parts during the running of the spinning machine or spooler on which the spindle is used.
The invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the spindle ,in side elevation, a portion of the spindlerail also being shown in cross section to illustrate the manner of attaching the vspindle thereto. Fig. 2 shows the'spindle mainly in cross vertical section. Fig. 3 is the same as Fig. '1 excepting that the spindle blade and whirl thereon are shown in an elevated position.
1 represents the rail, 2 the base of the spindle. This base` extends upwardly through the rail and is provided withan enlarged top end or head. 3 forming a' flange bearing against the top surface of the rail and assisting in securing the base thereto. The base is otherwise retained by means of a nut l thereon which when tightened bears against the under side of the rail locking the base securely to it. The top end or head 3 of the base, as may be seen by reference to Fig. 2, is made substantially cup-shaped, the same comprisinga bottom 5 with an upturned edge or rim 6, these parts combining to form an oil chamber 7 and presenting a cylindrically rounded side surface 8.

10 is the spindle blade which turns within the Opening 9 ofthe base and head. Carried bv the blade is a whirl 11. This whirl has thegeneral form of an inverted cup and.
properly upon it. lVith the parts thus arf ranged it will be seen that the exterior surface of the rim lies normally outside of and concentrlc with the surface ofV the head whereby the surface of the rim may occupy a position substantially of both extension and continuity to the surface of the head when the blade and whirl carried `by it are moved away-from the base. It will also be observed that the loweredge'of the rim 13 of the whirl lies very close to the spindle `rail when the whirl is in its normal position, the distance separating this edge from the spindle being less than the ordinary width of the tape which runs upon the whirl.
The operation is as follows: Oil placed within the chamber 7 will enter the opening containing the spindle and thereby keep the spindle properly lubricated at all times. Access is had to the chamber 7 either for purposes of inspection or for adding oil thereto simply by raising the blade and attached whirl, and this'may'be accomplished at any time during the operation of the machine simply by grasping the blade and lifting it into' an elevated position as shown in Fig. 3.V When this is done the tape normallyrunning around the rim of the whirl will run off the lower edge thereof onto the cylindrically rounded side surface 8 ofthe head of the base which provides aproper bearing for the tape. In this connection it is to be observed that the head is preferably provided with an outwardly turned annular ange 14 (see Fig. 2) which will prevent the taper running off the surface 8 of the head when deposited thereon by the elevation of the whirl as aforesaid. When the blade and whirl are replaced or dropped. into their normalV position as shown in Fig. l the bottom edge of the rim of the whirl-will engage the tape running upon the head as aforesaid and force the same against the Spindler-ail.
VThe resulting effect is that the tape will become automatically forced back upon the whirl or, in other words, jump back thereon when the whirl and blade will be rotated in the usual manner. This ada tability of the parts enables the blade an whirl not only to be elevated during the operation of the machine for the mrpose above referred to but also permits of the removal of the entire blade. und whirl as occasion may require without sto )ping the machine.

The combination comprising a spindle hase, a head presenting a cylindricallyrounded exterior side surface, a blade mounted to turn within said base and a whirl carried by the blade having a rim presenting a eylindrically-rounded exterior side surface a apted to receive a tape. said rim overlappn said head and with said surface of the rim normally exterior to and concentric with that of the head whereby said surface of the rim may occupy a position substantially of both extension and continuity to the surface ofthe head when said blade and whirl carried by it are moved away from the base and a tape running upon the surface of the whirl pass therefrom onto the surface of the head, and other means assisting in restoring the tape to the surface of the whirl during the running of the tape when the whirl is returned to its normal position.

The combination comprising a spindle rail, a spindle base extending through and below the rail with a head above the rail and bearing against it, said head presenting a cylindrically-rounded exterior side sorface, a blade mounted to turn within the hase and movable away from and toward the same. and a whirl carried by the blade having a rim presenting a cylindricallyrounded exterior side surface adapted to receive a tape. said rim normally overlaping said head down to a point closely ad- )acent said rail and with the exterior side 003i o! till mt surface of the rim normally exterior to and concentric with that of the head whereby said surface of the rim may occupy a position substantially of bot-h extension and continuity to the surface of the head when said blade and whirl carried by it are moved away from said base` substantially as described.

The combination comprising a spindle base, a head holiowed to form an oil chainber, said head presenting also a cylindrically-rounded exterior site surface. a blade mounted 'to turn within said base and a whirl carried by said blade and fitting over said head closing the chamber thereof. said whirl comprising in )art a rim presenting a cylindrlc...ly-rounded exterior side surface adapted to receive a tape. said rim overlapping said head and with the surface ot the rim normally exterior to and concentric with that of the head whereby said surface of the rim may occupy a position substantially of both extension and continuity to the surface of the head when said blade and whirl carried by it are moved away from the base to afford access to said chamber and wherebv also a tape running upon the surface of the whirl may then pass onto the exterior surface of said head.
5. The combination comprisinU a spindle base. a head presenting a cyeiindricailyrounded exterior side surface, said base and head having an opening therein ada ted to receive a spindle blade. said head aving within it an oil chamber in communication with said opening. a spindle blade mounted to turn within said opening and movable away from or toward said hase. and a whirl carried by the blade, said whirl comprising a cover for said head having the general form of an inverted cup filtin over and inclosing the oil chamber in t e head. said whirl consisting in part of a rim overlapping said head and presenting a cylindrically-ronnded exterior side surface adapted to receive a tape. said surface of the rim lying normally exterior to and concentric. with that of the head whereby it may occupy a position substantially of both extension and continuity to the surface of the head when the blade and whirl carried by it are moved away from the base and atape running u on the surface of the whirl to pass there rom onto the surface ofthe head, and other means cooperating with said rim to return the tape to the surface of the whirl during the running of the tape when the whirl is moved toward the base and returned to its normal position.
