UNITED STATES PATENT i OFFICE.
SPINDLE GUARD.
Application filed September 24, 19M. Serial No. 739,601.
This invention relates to' spindles used for the spinning and twisting of thread and yarn and relates more particularly to a guard or lock for such spindles. In removing the bobbin or other weft carrier from a spinning spindle, which operation is known as doding, the spindles are each subjected to a sharp upward pull or jerk which tends to draw the spindle out of its base. To pre- 1o vent such separation of the parts, it is customary to provide a spindle guard or lock to hold these parts in assembled relation.
It is the obj ect of our invention to provide an improved guard for such purposes which may be easily and cheaply manufactured and which possesses manifest advantages when in use.
Another feature of our invention relates to the provision of an improved oil storage chamber for such spindles.
Our invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of our improved spindle;
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view, taken along the line 2 2 in Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional elevation, taken along the line 3-3 in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the spindle base and guard.
Referring to the drawings, we have shown a spindle blade 10 upon which a bobbiu or weft holder B is frictionally supported. rlhe lower end of the spindle blade 10 eX- tends into a sleeve or bolster 11, which in turn is supported in a spindle base 12. The base 12 is provided with an enlarged upper end portion or head 13 and is secured to a spindle rail or other support 14 by a binding nut 15.
The head 13 of the base is preferably recessed as indicated at 16 (Fig. 3) to provide an enlarged oil chamber having an inlet 17 (Fig. 1) through which it may be filled. A plurality of radial holes 18 through the inner portion of the spindle base 12 conduct theA oil to the bolster 11 and spindle blade 10. The base portion or head 13 is also provided with an upstanding flange 19 which largely excludes dirt or dust from the spin dle bearing.
Our improved spindle guard comprises a plate 20 pivoted at 21 on the upper face .of the flange 19. Aportion 22 of the plate is offset and turned downward to provide a stop for limiting inward swinging mavement of the guard. This part 22 also constitutes a cover for the oil inlet 17 and eX- cludes dirt therefrom. The plate 20 is provided with asecond offset and down-turned projection 23 which is engaged and pushed outward by a spring 24, one end of which is seated in a recess 25 in the head 13.
The spindle whirl 27 by which the spindle is rotated is provided with an outwardly projecting lower flange 28, over which the spindle guard or plate 2O projects when in its normal inward osition. W'hen a bobbin is doffed, the spin le is thus held from displacement.
The outer edge ofthe fiange 28 is beveled downward and the spindle guard 20 pro- `jects inward at such an angle, as shown in Fig. 2, that the flange 28 has a cam action on the spindle guard, swinging it automatically outward as the spindle is dropped into position. Whenever it is desired to remove the spindle or to supply additional oil thereto, the guard may be easily swung outward by inward pressure on the projection 23.
While we have indicated our invention as applied to a spindle having a band drive, it will be evident that it is equally applicable to a spindle having a tape drive.
Having thus described our invention and i the advantages thereof, we do not wish to be limited to the details herein shown and described otherwise than as set forth in Athe claims, but what we claim is 1. In a spindle, a spindle blade, a whirl on said blade having a radially projecting lower flange, a spindle base, and a spindle guard comprising a flat plate pivoted to swing horizontally on said base to project 'a portion of said plate over said flange, whereby upward displacement of said spindle blade is prevented.
2. In a spindle, a spindle blade, a whirl on said blade havin a radially projecting lower flange, a spindle base, and a spindle guard comprising a flat plate pivoted to swing horizontally on said base to project a portion of said plate over said flange, said flange being downwardly beveled and displacing said guard with a cam action when said spindle blade is inserted in its bearing but said blade being held from upward displacement by said guard.
3. In a spindle, a base having a radially extended oil chamber and a feed opening for said chamber, and a spindle guard comprising a flat plate pivotally mounted on said base and means yieldingly holding said plate in position over said feed opening.

5. In a spindle, a spindle bla-de, a Whirl on said blade having a radially projecting lower flange, a base having a radially v0X- tended oil chamber and a feed opening for saidy Chamber, a spindle guard comprising a fiat plate pivotally mounted on said hase and means yieldingly holding said plate in position over said feed opening and over said lower flange.
