FOUNTAIN-BRUSH.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1916.
Application filed May 27, 1915. f Serial No. 30,742.
To all Iti/0m t may concer/n.'
Be it known that I, AUeUs'r RnrNiNcnR, aV citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Brushes, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to fountain brushes and more particularly to devices for applying stenciling liquid or the like, and the object oi' the invention is to improve the con struction and increase the utility and etliciency of the fountain brush.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more i'ul-ly described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l, is' a vertical, central sectiony through the brush. Ifig. 2, is a cross section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. y
The device as a whole consists of a hollow handle on the upper end of which is mounted. a removable cap 3. y The lower end oi the handle is enlarged to t'orm a head 4:, and is closed by a bottom section `The hollow handle and head form a receptacle for the stenciling ink, or other fluid to be discharged.
The brush proper, indicated at 6, is constructed of bristles in the usual manner, which are suitably secured in a head 7. The central portion of the head is threaded as at S, and is adapted to be screwed on to a threaded projection 9, formed on the bottom section 5 of the head.
The closure or bot-tom section 5 is provided with a, central opening 10, which forms a communication between the Huid receptacle and the bristles of the brush, and this opening or passage isadapted to be opened or closed by a cone-shaped valve 11. This valve is mounted interior of the head and `is normally held against its seat by means of a spring 12, which is secured interior of the head by means ot a screw cap 13. Formed on one end of the valve and projecting exterior of the head, is a push rodI 1l; this rod extends through a stuiifing box 15 which. is provided for the purpose of preventing leakage around the rod 14. The provision of the stuffing boX eliminates any leakage around the valve; and a washer 16 interposed between the head and the brush, prevents leakage at that point.
In operation, when using the brush, it is only necessary to open the valve by pressing on the outer end of the rod 14. A suitable quantity of they fluid is thus admitted to the bristles of the brush, the valve automatically closing the communicating passage 10, the moment the push rod is released, as the tension of spring 12 will force the valve back against its seat.
A 'fountain brush constructed as here shown, is simple and substantial in construction and neat in appearance. The exterior parts of the head and handle always remain clean, as the only escape for the fluid is through the central openingtlO, which conveys the fluid to the bristles of the brush.
The materials and finish ot the several parts of the device here shown, are such as the judgment and the experience of the. manufacturer may dictate.
I wish it understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details ot' construction may be resorted to within the scope oit' the appended claim, and that I do not wish to limit myselil to the specific design and construction here shown,
Having thus'described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a member having a fluid receiving chamber and a passage leading therefrom, and a pair of interiorly threaded openings extending through opposite sides of said member and connected by a eolie-shaped valve seat which latter intersects the passage, a cone-shaped valve in said seat having an enlargement of uniform diameter' at one end which enlargement slides in one of said openings and having a.
reduced push rod passing through the other oi said openings, acoll spring abutting the enlargernent, a screw cap abutting the spring my hand in the presence of two subscribing and closing the opening Which receives the Witnesses. spring, stuiiing in the other opening, and a gland closing the last named opening and AUGUST REININGER' 5 having a central opening receiving the push Witnesses:
rod, the latter extending beyond the gland. JOHN H. kHERRING, In testimony7 whereof I have hereunto set W. W. HEALEY.
