MARKING DEVECE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,383, dated December 29, 1903.
Application filed December 23, 1902. $erial No. 136,418. '(NomodeL) To all whom it may concern:
Beit known thatLJoHN EVERARD LANGILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of. Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Marking Devices, of which the following is a description, reference being had to accompanying drawings.
This invention relates particularly to devices for marking or Writing with ink, the object being to provide a device of this character that shall be simple in construction. and convenient'to carry and handle.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a marking device embracing my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 5 designates the body of the device, which serves both as a handle and as a reservoir for the writing fluid. Removably placed on one end of the body is the tubular stem 6, having a reduced end portion 7. This stem 6 is extended from a cap 8, having a flange 9, provided with an interior thread for engaging a thread on the body. The flange 9 is provided with a perforation 10, which when in register with a perforation 11 in the body will permit the escape of air and permit the ink to flow freelyinto the reservoir from the stem when the device is inverted.
At the junction of the reduced portion 7 I with the larger part of the stem a valve-seat is formed for a valve 12, from which a rod 13 extends, and on the rod is a head or button 14:, which nearly fills the outlet of the stem.
From the inner side of the valve a guide-rod 15 extends loosely through an opening in a perforated disk 16, held in place by the cap 8. This disk not only serves as a guide for the red, but acts as a strainer for the ink. The valve is held normally closed by means of spring 17, surrounding the rod 15 and hearing at one end against the disk and at the other end against the valve. It may be here stated that the portion of the valve for engaging With the seat consists of a rubber or similar washer.
In operating this device by a slight pressure of the button 14 on the paper or other surface to be marked the valve will be opened sufficiently to permit the outflow of ink, which will be regulated by the button. To facilitate the outflow of ink, I provide the reservoir with a valve-closed opening 21, the valve 22 being opened by pressure on a cap 23.
Having described my invention, What I desire to' secure by Letters Patent is-- 1. A marking device comprisingacombined handle and reservoir, a cap removably placed thereon, a tubular stem extended from the cap, a valve in thestem, a rod extended from the valve to the outlet of the stern, a perforated disk held in place by said cap, a rod extended from the valve through an opening in the disk, and a spring between the disk and valve.
2. A marking device comprisingacoinbined handle and reservoir, a cap removably placed on one end thereof, a tubular stem extended from the cap, a valve in the stem, a rod extended from the valve to the outlet of the stem, an enlarged head on said rod, a perforated disk held in place by said cap, a rod extended from the valve through an opening in the disk, and a spring between thedisk and valve.
Signed at New York this 17th day of Decernber, 1902.
JOHN EVERARD LANGILL.
