Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1916.
Application filed December 9, 1914. Serial No. 876,228.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that LHowAm) Antenna Bun- SON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Box-Lid Openers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a box lid opener and has for its object to provide means, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, carried'by the body portion of the box, and capable of being shifted to engage the edge of the lid, for the purpose of prying the lid off fromthe body portion.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device for the purpose set forth which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eflicient and con venient in its use, and inexpensive.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically de scribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modification can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several viewsz-Figure 1 is anelevation of a box having'a lid showing the adaptation therewith of a lid opener in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of a box, broken away, showing a 11d opener in accordance with this invention in full and in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of a box having a lid and further showing in connection therewith a box lidfopener in accordance with this invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes the body portion of a box or a receptacle, by way of example a circular box or receptacle adapted to contain paste or polish, and said body portion is open at its top. The reference character 2 denotes a lid for closing the open top of the body portion 1 wardly projecting bead 5, against which abuts the rim 3 of the lid 2 when the latter is mounted in position of the body portion 1 to close the open top of the latter.
Connected to the body portion 1, below the bead 5, is a pin 6, which constitutes a pivot and has its outer end provided with a head 7 The pin 6 projects laterally from the body portion 1, and has pivotally mounted thereon the body portion 8 of a lid opener and said body portion 8' is semi-circular in contour and is mounted, near its t'op,.upon the pin 6.
Projecting outward from the top edge on the body portion 8 of alid opener and ex to is an arm 9, which terminates in a vertitending at right angles with respect therecally disposed handle 10. The latter has an outwardly projecting right angular lug 11, which extends in a plane at right angles with respect to the arm .9. The arm 9 ofisetsthe handle of the rim?) of the lid 2.
By shifting the body portion 8 upon its pivot the edge thereof will engage in the lower end of the rim 3 and pry the lid 2 from or the body portion l, or conveniently shift the lid 3v from o'lf the body portion 1 so I that the lid can be removed by hand. I
What I claim is The combination with a box having an uninterrupted circumferential bead and a lid therefor also having an uninterrupted circumferential marginal flange extending laterally beyond the aforesaid bead, when said lid is in position on the box; of a semicircular shaped lidraiser pivoted adjacent its top end to said box below the head thereon and adapted to exert an upward pressure on said lid, said lid raiser being so pivoted as to normally lie with the straight side thereof parallel with the bottom of the box, and an integral handle formed on said lid raiser and extending upwardly and out-' wardly with respect to the" pivoted end thereof, whereby to form a clearance for the aforesaid bead and flange when the handle is swung downwardly to raise said lid.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
