Description

J M Fr 2y Side Ann S heath 118226 a mmmvezmsfl k%itness,es I 1' E'FICE.
JOSEPH J. M. FREY, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SIDE-ARM SHEATHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,228, dated August 22, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osEPH J. M. FREY, of the city and county of Sacramento, State of California, have invented an Improved Belt-Clasp for the Sheaths of Side-Arms and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are suflicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said in vention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to an improvement in beltelasps such as are employed for attaching the holsters or scabbards of side-arms to the waistband or belt for the purpose of securing them to the person; and it consists of a small hook or pointed lug which projects from the free end of the belt-hook so as to enter a slot in the opposite or fixed side when the two ends are brought together. This hook prevents the scabbard or pistol-case from being unfastened and lost from any cause.
In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- A represents a pistol-ease or other sheath for side-arms. In order to secure this case to the waistband of the pants or the belt of the wearer a clasp, B, is employed, which consists of a narrow plate of metal which is bent upon itself. One of these ends is then secured to the case, leaving the other free, as shown, and the holster or pistol-ease is attached to the person by slipping the waistband or belt between the two ends of the clasp. The weight of the arm will then hold the clasp in place. When thus simply attached it is often the case that a sudden movement, or the motion of a horse when the wearer is mounted, will cause it to unhook from the band or belt, and the pistol or other arm with its seabbard is lost.
My improvement consists in securing to the under side of the free end of the clasp a triangu larly-shaped hook, 0, with its point projecting upward.
A slot, f, is also made through the fixed end of the clasp directly opposite the hook 0, into which the point of the hook enters when the two ends are pressed together. This hook serves, when the clasp has been slipped down over the waistband or belt, to prevent its eomin g off until the free end of the clasp has been raised by the finger, so as to free the hook from the cloth or other material of the waistband or belt.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The holster or scabbard-clasp A, provided with a hook, e, and slot f, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
In witness that the above-described invention is claimed by me I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
