HANS HANSEN, OF NEW ROCKFORD, NORTH DAKOTA.
ADJUSTABLE FOOTBOAYRD EGR JVAGONS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1916.
Application filed April 1, 1915. Serial No. 18,554.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HANS HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Rockford, in the county of Eddy and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Footboards for lVagons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved adjustable foot-board for wagons and has for its primary object to provide a footboard which may be easily and quickly applied to either section of a double Wagon box.
The invention has for tant detail objects to means for vertically adjusting the footboard with respect to the Wagon box and also disposingr said board in inoperative position.
The invention has for an additional 0bject to provide sectional adjustable hangers adapted for application to the vertical end wall of the Wagon box, a foot-board hingedly mounted upon Said hangers' a flexible element connected to the hangers and adapted to support the foot-board in a horizontal position.
W'ith the above and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel features one of its imporprovide improved of construction, combination and arrange-` ment of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in Which- Figure 1 is a vlongitudinal section through a double wagon body showing one application of my improved foot-board thereto. F ig. 2 is a, fragmentary section similar to Fig. 1 showing another application of the board and the same disposed in its lowered position. Fig. 3 is a detailed fragmentary perspective View of the foot-board- Referring in detail to the accompanying drawing, wherein like refe rence numerals are indicative of similar parts, 5 designates the lower or body section of a Wagon box and G the upper removable section thereof. To the side Walls of this upper box, section 6, the vertically disposed cleats 7 are secured upon the. inner and outer faces thereof and project below the lower edges of said walls. The projecting ends of the respective cleats are adapted for frictiona-l binding engage` ment upon the corresponding faces of the sice walls of the body section 5 ci the wagon. The present invention is not, however,.to be limited to this paiticular mounting ot the upper box section 6, as various other means for removably mounting the same upon the box section 5 may be employed. l
The present invention includes a pair of hangers or brackets each of which consists of two sections indicated by the numerals 8 and 9 respectively, the former being provided with a hook 10 the hanger sections is more openings therein necting bolt 12, and it will be readily understood that the hanger section 8 may be longitudinally adjusted upon the section 9, and the bolt 12 inserted through coinciding openings so as lto rigidly hold the bracket section 8 in its adjusted position With respoot to the section 9. Upon the lower ends of the hanger sections 9 the footboard 13 is mounted by means of the hinges 14. .vidjacent to the free longitudinal edge of the foot-board and at each end thereof hooks 15 are provided to which the free ends of chains 16 are adapted to be connected, the other ends of said chains being suitably attached to the bracket sections 9 of the hangers.
As clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the hooked terminals 10 of the bracket sections 8 are adapted to be engaged upon the upper edge of the end wall of either the body section 5 of the Wagon box, or the upper removable section 6 thereof. During the loading of the Wagon, the chains 16 are disconnected from `the brackets so that the foot-board 14 will drop downwardly and hang below the hangers upon which it is mounted. Thus there will be no interference by the foot-board with formed with two or to receive the conthe loading of the material into the Wagon body. lVhen the contents body have been dumped or unloaded the foot-board is raised to a horizontal position as in Fig. 1 and the free ends of the chains 16 connected to the bracket sections The board is now in position for use. By the provision of the adjustable hangers the foot-board may be raised or lowered to the desired position to suit the conven ience or", the individual. lf desired, the terminal hooks 10 of the adjustable hanger sections may be provided with suitable clamps for engagement with the end wall of the wagon body.
of the Wa gon on one end. Each of treinely durable and serviceable.v
'From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner oi'\use, and -several advantages of my invention will be clearly understood, and it will be seen thatV I have produced a highly convenient and serviceable adjustable foot-board which is readily attachable to either the single or double type of Wagon body without necessitating any material alterations in the constrnctionthereof. The board may be easily and quickly .released so that it will swing downwardly to an inoperative position where it is out of the way and will not provide an obstruction to the proper loading of lthe vehicle. The mounting and supporting means for the foot-board, while of very simple construction is nevertheless eX- Owing to the simplicity of the device it will be appreciated that the same may be produced at small manufacturing cost.
lVhile I have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several parts, it is nevertheless to be understood that the invention is susceptible of considerable modification therein, and I therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly. embodied within the spirit and 2;),v
scope of the'invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
The combination with a Wagon box, of a detachable interidr foot board for the wagon box including the 'foot board proper, hanger sections hingedly connected at one of their ends to one longitudinal edge of the foot board adjacent to the opposite ends thereof, additional hanger sections adapted for detachable engagement over the upper 40 edge of one of the box walls, means orfvadjnstably connecting the hanger sectioriga//onf the foot board to the latter hangerff'v'se tions, and chains connected at one ofdthieiy ends to the foot board adjacent its` other, longitudinal edge, said hoard normally hanging in a pendant position .in parallel relation to the box wall, said chains being adapted to be attached at their free ends to the latter' hanger sections to support the 50 foot board in a horizontal position.
In testimony whereofl I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HANS HANSEN.
