GEORGE TV. STURGTS, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
VENDING-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,211, dated February 7, 1905.
Application filed May 23,1904. Serial No. 209,408.
To (/l/ ll'llom 1'1 'IH/(L l/ (Oil (W770i Be it known that I, GEORGE \V. S'rURGIs, a citizen of the United States of America, and
a resident of Portland, Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vend- 5 mg-lVagons, of wlnch the following 18 aspecitication.
My invention relates to a vending-wagon; and the object of my invention is to construct a wagon which will be suitable for streetvending, &c.
\Vith this end in view my invention consists of a wagon having a body and counter adjustably secured to one or both sides, so that it extends outward above the wheels. As I prefer to construct it the shelf or counter is hinged to the side, so that it will fold against the side, and a section of the side is hinged at the top, so that it swings outward to form an awning. A section of the floor is removable and adapted to be supported at a lower level to form a platform to stand on to give headroom beneath the top of the wagon without making the latter excessively high.
1 illustrate my invention by means of the accompanying drawings, in whieh Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 is a central cross-section, of my wagon. Fig. 3 is a front view and section of a special form of hinge.
A represents the wagon body, which is mounted in any suitable manner on the wheels (I by means, preferably, of drop-axles c to bring the floor I) of the wagon-body as low as possible. A section (2 of the floor extending nearly the entire length is removable, leaving an opening (Z. Cleats or fastening devices are provided for fastening the section in its place in the floor and also for supporting it at a lower level. As here shown, the cleats rest on portions of the runninggear on the axle behind and the circle in front. This section thus forms a platform on which the vendor may stand erect without having the top excessively high.
The wagon-body is provided with the usual top, and one or both sides are provided with an adjustabtv-secured shelf or counter B, which when in position extends outward above the level of the wheel. As here shown, the shelf B is secured to the side by hinges if in such a manner that it will fold up against the side, and it is held in a horizontal position by chains l), secured to hooks b. The side of the wagon, as here shown, is hinged at the top to form an awning u when opened outward and held in a raised position by means of the brace 11. \Vhen the shelf is closed up and the awning a is lowered, the shelf fits inside of the awning and is held in position by a stop 7), so that the two pack snugly together. \Vhen it is desired to give the shelf an outward pitch or slope for displaying certain kinds of goods, in order to avoid the wheels the inner edge of the shelf is raised, as shown in Fig. 3. In this case /1 is the hinge, which is secured to thew-agonbody by bolts passing through vertical slots in the hinge. \Vhen it is desired to raise the inner edge of the shelf, the hinge is lifted and the pin 1 inserted in a suitable hole beneath the lower end of the hinge. The shelf may then be tilted downward without interference by the wheel.
1 claim--- 1. The herein-described vending-wagon having a body and a covered top, sides hinged at the top and adapted to swing outward to form an awning and a shelf or counter hinged to the side above the level of the wheels and adapted to be held horizontally and to fold up inside of said awning when the latter is closed, the lower edge of said awning coming below the upper edge of the shelf when the parts are folded.
2. The herein described vendingwagon having a body and covered top with a shelf or counter adj ustably secured to the side and adapted to extend horizontally outward above the level of the wheels, the floorof said wagon having a removable section provided with cleats or fastening devices for securing it to the wagon at a lower level than said floor.
having a body With a shelf or counter hinged a position extending outward above the level of the Wheels, hinges for connecting the inner edge of the shelf or counter to the side of the Wagon and means for adjusting said hinges vertically.
. MNWMMMWWmmtmd Signed at Portland this 15th day of April, to the side thereof and adapted to be held in 1905.
