THEOBALD M. HAOKETT, OF ALBANY, NEWV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWARD F. HAOKEIT, OF SAME PLACE.
CRANE FOR COAL-CARTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,014, dated September 13, 1887.
Application filed February 4, 1887. Serial No. 226,507.
.To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, THEOBALD M. HAOKETT, of the city and county of Albany, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Crane Attachment for Coal-Carts and other Vehicles forDelivering Commodities, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a crane attachment for carts and other vehicles used for the delivery of heavy commodities which usually require weighing at the place of delivery; and the object of myinvention isto provideaready means for handling and, if required, weighing bags or other packages of such commodities while being delivered.
To this end my invention consists in pro viding the vehicle with aswinging crane having a lateral arm that can be swung downwardly when a package is to be hitched thereon and upwardly when an attached package is to be raised.
In the accompanying drawings, which are herein referred to and form part of this specification, Figure l is a longitudinal section of 2 part of a box of a vehicle provided with my attachment, the lateral arm of the crane being shown in its elevated position; Fig. 2, a like section with the crane-arm in its depressed position, and Fig. 3 a plan view of Fig. 1.
As represented in the drawings, A indicates the after body of the box of a wagon or other vehicle used for delivering coal or other merchandise, and which is provided with my crane attachment.
5 B indicates a crane that is rcmovably attached to the box A, and which consists of a vertical post, 1, which is fitted to turn in the boxes 2, and is provided with a lateral'arm, 3, that isjointed to the head of the post 1, so as 0 to be swung up and down as occasion requires,
in the manner hereinafter explained. A diagonal brace, 4, having ajoint, 5, near its middle, and having its opposite ends jointed to the post 1 and arm 3, forms a support for the 4 latter when extended, and serves as a means for positively raising and depressing the outer end of said arm. A bent lever, 6, is pivoted to the head of the post 1, and is connected by the rod 7 to the joint 5 of the diagonal brace.
(No model.)
0 indicates a scale-beam or steelyard, hung to the outer end of the arm 3 of the crane for convenience in weighing articles delivered from the vehicle. A hook or other appliance may be attached to the pendent ring of said scalebeam, when preferred, to facilitate the hanging of bags or other receptacles thereon.
The manner of operating my invention is as follows: The crane B, whose arn13should normally range in line with the side of the box A, is swung around so that said arm will extend 6o transversely over said box, and the arm depressed by raising the lever 6, as shown in Fig. 2. A package whose weight will rest on the bottom of the box can then be readily hooked onto the scale-beam O or arm 3, ac- 6 cording to circumstances. Then by depressing the lever 6, so that the inner limb of said lever will range in line with the rod 7, as shown in Fig. 1, the joint 5 will be forced outwardly to bring the two parts of the brace 4 to range in line with each other, as shown in Fig. 1, and thereby the arm 3 and its attached weight will be raised to a horizontal position by a slight expenditure of power, the brace 4, lever 6, and rod 7 combining to form toggle-joints to accomplish that purpose.
When preferred, a crane arranged to swing on its axis, as herein described, but having a rigid lateral arm provided with ascale-beam, may be substituted for the jointed crane herein So shown and described; but, as in that case the packages would require to be lifted by hand, I prefer a crane made substantially as shown in the drawings.
I claim as my invention- I 1. The combination, with a cart or other vehicle, of a crane consisting of the following parts, to wit: a post, 1, which is pivoted to the box of said cart to swing on its vertical axis,
a tilting arm, 3, that projects laterally from and is hinged to the head of said post, a jointed diagonal brace, 4, havingahinge-joint, 5, near its middle and having one of its ends hinged to the postl and its opposite end hinged to the arm 3, and a bent lever, 6, that is pivoted 5 to the head of the post 1 and is connected by a rod, 7, to the joint 5 of the diagonal brace,
as and for the purpose herein specified.
2. A crane for coal-carts and other vehicles, 1 and is connected by a rod, ,7, to the j0int5 consisting of the crane-post 1, having atilting l of the diagonal brace, as and for the purpose arm, 3, hinged to its head so as to project lat- I herein specified. erally therefrom, a diagonal brace, 4:, which is THEOBALD M. HAOKETT.
5 hinged at one end to said post and at the op- \Vitnesses:
posite end hinged to said arm, and a bent 1e- WM. H. LOW, ver, 6, that is pivoted to the head of the post 1 S. B. BREWER.
