DUMPlNG-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 315,968. dated April 14, 1885. Application filed Septieuiberlfi, 1853 (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS S. Srnwanr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saltsburg, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Vagons; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representa-- tion of the wagon in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertica'l section of the same, showing the wagon'tilted or dumped. Fig. 3 is a detail view. Fig. 4 is a detail view.
The invention relates to dumping wagons or carts; and its object is to construct and arrange the shafts, axle, and body of a wagon in such manner in relation to each other that the load, besides being dumped automatically, will fall with less force and with less jar to the cart than in the usual construction.
The invention consists in beveling downward and backward the rear ends of the shafts and connecting them with the body by a hinge-joint. The front leaf of thehinge is secured to the upper surface of the shaft. The joint lies upon the upper front edge of the bevel, and the rear leaf is loosely connected with the under surfaceof the body-rail. The said lower leaf has the same length as the bevel, so that its juncture with the rail corresponds, when the body is down, with the lower edge of the same. The middle transverse line of the bevels corresponds with the middle transverse line of the wagon-body, the edges of the bevel being, therefore, respectively in front and in rear of the same.
Any proper locking device may be used to secure the body-rails on the shafts; but I prefer to use the clevis for which a patent was granted me on the 11th day of March, 1884, and numbered 295,071.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the body of the wagon or cart, of the usual construction; a, the axle, and a, a the body-rails,resting on the shafts B B, and having their forward ends projecting in front of the body to a suitable distance. The rear ends of the shafts, where they are secured to the axle, are beveled downwardand backward,as shown at b, the central transverse line of the bevels corresponding with the axis of the shaft and the central tranverse line of the wagonbody.
C G are the hingejoints by which the wagon-body is secured to the shafts. Each hinge O is composed of the front leaf, 0, which is firmly fixed to the upper surface of one of the shafts, the joint of the hinge lying immediately above the forward upper edge of the bevel b and the rear leaf, 0, which passes backward, and is'loosely attached to the bodyrail a by means of a hook or staple, o fixed to the latter, and passing through an opening in the end of the leaf, or by other proper means.
The forward projecting end of each bodyrail is held in place upon the shaft by a loopclevis, D, in all respects similar to that for which a patent was granted to me on the 11th day of March, 188i, and numbered 295,071.
(I is the'loop of the clevis; cl, the weighted arm to pass and retain the loop over the bodyrail, and d? the transverse rod or bar which unites the loops d and makes them act together.
Any other suitable clevis may be used in place of the one described.
The manner in which the invention acts is as follows: As the body of the cart rests upon the upper forward edges of the bevels b as fulcrums, which edges lie in front of the central transverse line of the wagon, it is evident that when the wagon is evenly and properly loaded there will be a preponderance of weight behind these edges, and that only the locking of the body-rails on the shaft prevents the body of the wagon from beginning to tip backward. \Vhen the body-rails are unlocked, by turning the loop of either clevis forward and off the rail, the body will tip backward accordingly upon the upper edges of the bevels b as fulcrum-points until the lower surface of the body lies upon the bevels. The lower edges of the latter then become fulcrumpoints, as they correspond in position at that time with the points of juncture of the body with the lower leaves of the hinges C, the said lower leaves being made of a proper length for such purpose. The fulcrum-points are now behind the central transverse line of the wagon-body, and the fall of the load is consequently'made less abrupt. Also the body of the wagon is thrown completely off the shafts, having no connection therewith except by the rear leaves, 0, and, if desired, could be readily detached by releasing the hooks 0 After the load is dumped the body begins to return more readily than in the usual construction, because it first turns on the rear fulcrumpoints. As it begins to turn on the front fulcrum-points it will begin to lessen its velocity, and will come down easily upon the shafts and becaught and locked thereon by the driver.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a dumping wagon or cart, the combination, with the body-rails, the shafts having their inner ends secured to the axle and beveled downward and backward, and any proper device to lock the body-rails on the shafts, of two hinges having their front leavestsecured to the uppersurfaces of the shafts, their joints lying immediately above the upper front edges of the bevels and their rear leaves loosely connected by their rear ends to the body-rails, and having the same length as the In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOS. S. STEWART.
W'itnesses:
PHILIP O. MAsI, M. P. OALLAN.
