rThis invention relates to package and article car1iers',and more especially to suc-h as are adapted to be mounted 011 a vehicle; and the object of the same is to produce a carrier for attachment to the ruiming hoard of an automobile.

The invention comprises a liOht structure, preferably of screen wire, and including a main or body panel and two end panels, the former hingedly connected with the out.e1 edge of 'the running board and the end panels h'ingedly connecting with the extremities of the main panel. ln the drawings the automobile body A has doors D and front and rear'fenders l? and R, as usual between which latter eX- tends the runningboard B, the same running from a point adjacent the front fender, past both doors, to a point adjacent the rear fender. This is the place where suit cases, boxes, and the like are usually carried by motorists when making" a tour, although naturally whatever they mount on the running board at this point must loe strapped or otherwise fastened against dislodg'ment due to the vibration in passing over rough roads. The running hoard is used in getting in or ont of the vehicle, but this convenience is sacrificed when packages are carried thereon. l propose to mount on lthe running hoard between its vtenders, a

folda'ble carrier, which when folded will not destroy the m'dinal` f use oit the running board, and when distended will produce a good sized receptacle for packages and other articles.

Coming now to the details of the present invention, the numeral l designates the main panel of this carrier which may well be a frame wherein is wire screening', as shown in Fig. l, and the numerals 2 designate the end panels similarly made and hinged at 3 to the extremities of the main panel by any means which will permit them to close against the same as seen in Fig. 5. 4 are b aces whereof there are two, one for each end panel hinged at to the inner edge ofy such pane-l 2 as shown in Fig. 3, and each brace has a hook G at its outer end for engaging over the upper bar of the main panel when the end panels are stood up-V resent-ea Mar. a, reis.

parts to the running board, l make use of two or more hinges '7. each having its upper leaf secured to the main panel l or the frame bar thereof. and its lower leaf carried downward and hooked as'at 8 around the bead 9 which is usually formed along the edge of the running' board B. This leaf is secured thereto hy screws, nails, bolts, or possibly set screws as indicated at l0 in Fig. Ll, and these set screws may have wingshaped ends so that, they become in eect thumb screws and need no tools for operation. Thus the carrier can be at'ached to and detached from the running board by hand and with but a moments time. lVhen folded it Vasealmes the position shown in Fig. 5. and if itis quite stout it isnot materially injured it the operator steps upon it in passing' into the 'vehicle or out of the salme. Also, being of wire screen. any dirt left by the foot will drop through the wire screen onto the running' board. When it is used the main panel is raised and the end panels swung to the position shown in Fig. 2 and the braces swung on their hinges so that their hooks engage the upperedge of the main panel as best seen in Figs. l and 2; and thereafter packages may be stored within the carrier and need not he strap ed or otherwise fastened to the machine w en taking long tours. l prefer thatthe device be .made entirely of metal, and it should be galvanized, or otherwise treated to prevent rust.

The 'foregoing description and the drawinvs have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parte, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall withinthe scope of the appended claims.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a carrier for the running boards of automobiles, the eombinationwith a main panel, two end panels, hinges onnecting these panels with the extremities of the main panel, and for each end panel a brace hinged at oneend to the free end of the end panel and having a hook at its other end; of means for hingedly mounting the lower edge of Ithe main panel on the outer edge of the running board of the machine.

In a carrier for the running boards of automobiles, the combination with a main panel composed of .a frame and a sereen filling, end panels composed of a frame and a screen filling, hinges connecting these panels withthe'extremities of the main panel, and for each end panel a brace hinged at one end to the free end of the endv panel and having a hook at its other end; of means for hingedly mounting the lower frame bar of the main panel on the outer edge of the ruiming board of the machine.

In a carrier for the running boards of automobiles, the combination with a main panel composed ot' a frame and a screen filling, end panels composed of a frame and a screen filling, hinges connecting these panels with the extremities of the main paneh and for each end panel a brace hinged at one end to the free end of the endY panel and having a hook at its other end; of a plurality of hinges each having its upper leaf connected with the lower frame bar of the main panel and its lower leaf hooked around 'the bend at the outer edge of the running board, and a set screw through said leaf against said bead, for the purpose set forth.
