FENCE-POST FOR WIRE FENCING.

Sionils, a citizen ot the l'nited States. residing at bltokesville` in the county ot Charlton and State ot' Georgia. have invented certain new and uset'ul Improvements in hence-Posts tor Wire Fencing; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a tnll. clear, and exact description ot' the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a ppertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tence posts and more particularly te metal posts. and has for one ot its objects the provision of a post whereby any number ot' line wires may be secured thereto, or wire fabric may be secured to the posts with equal eliciency.
A further object ot this invention resides in the construction of a tence post provided with adjustable securing means, whereby any number ot line. wires or wire fabric of any size ot' mesh may be readily Secured to the posts without the necessity of making any alterations in the post construction.
A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a fence post which may be inserted in a plastic base, or set within a hole in the ground, and the hole filled with cement or dirt. or the post may be used as a driven post. in the latter instance beineespecially adapted for marshy ground. And a still tui-ther object of this invention resides in the provision of a metal fence pest which is simple in construction, ot light weight. ethcient and durable in purpose, and which can be manufactured and sold upon the market at a normal cost.
These and other objects will more, fully appear as the nature of thc invention is more clearly understood by the construction. combination and arrangements of the parts thcreot as described in the following specification. defined in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. in which.

The posts constituting this invention may he t'ormed ot' cast iron. wrought iron. steel or any other suitable metal. and while the preferred form ot bars is here shown, namely angle bars of L-shape in cross section, it is to be understood that the bars may be channel shaped, U-shaped or any other desired torni in cross section.
Referring' to the drawings 1 1 denotes thev angle bars. preferably Lsshaped in cross section and longitudinally tapered, the bars being positioned in parallelism to each other in a manner that one ot the [langes ot cach ot' the bars face each other, and between these flanges at predetermined points are the spacing lugs or collars 2. and through the spacingr lugs or collars 2 and correspondingly registering apertures formed in the facing flanges ot the bars are the bolts or rivets 3, for securing' the respective bars in fixed parallel relation to each other, the lugs or collars 2 being ot sufficient length to provide the space s1 between the bars.
The lower ends of the bars are tapered to provide the pointed ends 5. and disposed in vertical edgewise position between the bars 1 within the space l is provided a plate (3. the width ot which is greater than the width ot the tiangres of the bars l, the lower portion of the plate (3 beingT tapered to provide the point 7. The tapered end 5 of bars 1. and the vertical edgewise position of the plate. t3. together with the point 7 of the plate enables the post to be readily driven into the ground. when the same is used as a driven post. the upper surface of the plate (3 beiner horizontal as shown at 8 provides a broad surt'aee for receivimga the blows of a maul. sledtfev hammer or other drivingr means t'or driving the post into the ground at the initial operation.
The point T ot' the. plate G projects for a distance below the pointed ends 5 of the bars 1. and the plate (3 is rigidly secured within the space t between the hars 1 by the bolts or rivets il, preferably rivets.
lietween the bars l within the space Yt and at a point remote trom the lower end ol' the post is the transversely positioned anchor plate lil. the plate lt being rigidly secured in vertiral edgewise position within the lspace l and between the bars 1 by the bolts or rivets' 11. the anchor plate 1() being in vertical alinement with the plate (3, and preferably positioned at a point upon the post wherein the same will lie slightly beneath the surface ot the `ground, for main taining the post in strict vertical position by preventingl lateral displacement ot' the post, and owing to the vertical cdgewise positioning ot the plate 10, the post is more readily driven into the ground.
For securing the wires or the fabric ot the fence line to prevent lateral movement of hook bolts 125, only one bolt here being shown. these bolts being positioned within the space l between the facing [langes otI the bars 1 and vertically adjustable within the space 1, whereby any number ot' hook bolts 12% may be used and the same positioned at any point along the post t'or securing any number of wires desired` or Jfor positioning the bolts 13 for engaging the twisted portions of the mesh ot' the wire fabric, the bolts 13 being provided at the end opposite the hook portion with the thread 14 and retained in secured adjusted position by the nut 15, screw threaded thereon and bearing against the rear edges of the flanges of the bars 1` the hook end 13 being designed to engage the line wire 16, and by screwing the nut 15 over the thread end 11 of the bolt, the hook end impinges the Wire 16 against the front of the post and firmly retains the wire 16 upon the post.
I desire to here state that while I have shown the post constituting this invention as being driven or set in the ground, I do not limit myself to this exact application as the base of the post may be set in a mold and cement or other plastic material, molded upon the lower end of the post thus providing` a metal post having a plastic base without having` to malte any alterations in the construction of the post. as the angle bars 1 together with the plate (3,' and the anchor plate 1() will be embedded within the, plastic composition and tlnls add materially to the etticiency and streng! h ot' the-post.
Vhile I here have shown and described the prei'erred form of my invention` l hereby reserve the right to malv'e such alterations and variations therein from time to time as l may deem expedient, and which will neither depart from the spirit otI this invention nor the scope otl the claim.
Having thus t'ully described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent. is*
metal t'ence post` comprising a pair ot bars l'ormed ot L-shaped angle iron and having their lower ends beveled to provide sharp points` said bars havingl one ot' their angle portions positioned tace to tace in spaced parallelism in a manner to torm a post substantially T-shaped in cross section and providing a broad attachingl tace, means for maintaining said bars in fixed spaced relation. a flat base plate rigidly secured in vertical edgewise position between the opposing faces at the lower pointed ends ot' said bars, said base plate. having a horizontal upper portion and a Sharp V-shaped point projecting slightly beyond the pointed ends of said bars and cooperating therewith to provide for the ready driving of the post into the ground, and a flat elongated anchor plate horizontally disposed and rigidly secured in vertical edgewisc position between the opposing faces of said bars above and in vertical alinement with said base plate, said base plate,I said anchor plate, and said spaced parallel angle portions ot' said bars being transversely disposed relative to the fence line and coacting with each other to prevent lateral movement of the post in the longitudinal direction of the line of the fence, the broad attaching face of the post being parallel with the fence line to prevent lateral movement ot' the post transversely of the line of fence.
