MYRON W. HOWARD, OF OAMANCHE, IOWA.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 681,641, dated August 27, 1901. Application filed August 23, 1900. Serial No. 27,839. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MYRON W. HOWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camanche, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fence-posts, more particularly sheet-metal fence-posts.
The invention has for its object to provide a-metallic fence-post and anchor therefor of simple and inexpensive construction that will be strong, light, and durable, that may be easily and quickly set up in position, and when set up will be rigidly retained in place.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sheet-metal post; Fig. 2, a cross-sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of the supporting plate.
Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 indicates my improved post, which is constructed of a rectangular piece of sheet metal stamped to form a vertically-extending centrally-arranged V-shaped strengthening rib 2, provided at each side with an outwardlyextending flange 3. Each of the flanges 3 is formed with a series of wire-retaining ears 4 by stamping, the ears of one series being in alinement with the ears of the adjacent series, so that each pair of alining ears will engage the wire 5, as shown. The wire is retained in position by bending the ears around the same.
The lower end of the post is provided with an anchor or supporting-plate 6, whichis formed of a rectangular piece of sheet metal slitted, as at 7 8, to form a pair of retaining-tongues 9 l0 and an offset'which is engaged by the lower end of the V-shaped strengthening-rib. The tongues are bent at an angle to the remainin g portion of the plate and secured by means of rivets or other fastening means to the flanges 3, as at 11. By reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings it will be perceived that the flanges 3 of the post are arranged on the sides of the tongues 9 10 that are opposite the otfset on which the V-shaped rib rests. Inasmuch as the lower end of the V-shaped rib rests on the ofiset the post is prevented from being inclined in that direction, and thereby bending over the tongues 9 10in the same direction, and by riveting the flanges 3 of the post to the opposite sides of said tongues the post is prevented from being inclined away from the offset and bending down the tongues in the same direction, as the lower edges of the flanges 3 form shoulders which engage the plate 6 and prevent the flanges and tongues from being turned down.
By constructing the post in the manner set forth the same is of extreme lightness and cheaply made, will be found exceedingly duable, and may easily be removed after having been put in position when it is desired to move the fence, and by the arrangement of a separate supporting-plate, as well as the form of the post in the manner shown, the same can be packed in lots, so as to economize space in the matter of storage and transportation. Therefore it is thought the many advantages of my new and improved post can be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the ac companying drawings.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a fence-post consisting of a rectangular piece of sheet metal provided centrally with a longitudinal V- shaped strengthening-rib, of an anchor consisting of a rectangular piece of sheet metal slitted transversely at one side to form two tongues and an intermediate ofiset, said tongues being bent up vertically at a right angle to the plate, said post being seated at its lower end on the anchor-plate with the V- shaped rib resting on the offset, and the flanges of the post on each side of the said rib fastened to the vertical tongues, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a fence-post consisting of a rectangular piece of sheet metal provided centrally with a longitudinal V- shaped strengthening-rib, of an anchor consisting of a rectangular piece of sheet metal slitted transversely at one side to form two tongues and an intermediate oifset, said tongues being bent up vertically at a right angle to the plate, the said post being seated at its lower end on the anchor-plate with the V-shaped rib projecting between the two tongues and resting on the offset, and the two 10 flanges on-each of the said ribs rigidly fas tened to the vertical tongues, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MYRON W. HOWARD.
