IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,184, dated August 22, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. B11213, of the county of Morgan and State of Georgia, respect fully represent that I have made an Improvement in a Gar-Coupler, of which the following is a specification A A, Figure 1, is the coupling-box; P, the pin 5 T, the trigger. (l is support for pin E, lower pinhole. Fig. 2, S is a slot in trigger. 1t 1% is arod.
The object of the invention is to facilitate the coupling of the cars together by their own action andrelieve the danger incurred by a person standing between to guide the link and place the pin in position by hand.
A A A A, Fig. 1, is the couplingbox T, the trigger; and G, a projection on the same for the support of the pin when at rest.
When the link enters the box, by the backward movement of one car on another, it is pressed upon the trigger T, which, being suspended by and partially revolving upon the rod 1% It, is raised, and the projection G removed from under the pin P, which falls by its own gravity and passes through the slot S and the link, and into the lower hole E, and couples the cars together.
WVhen it is desired to llllOOllPlG them, it can be done by hand or by a lever or chain attached to the head of the pin, withdrawing the pin. WVhcn the pin is withdrawn to a certain point the caris moved forward, which withdraws the link, and the trigger sets itself by its own gravity, and the pin is again at rest on the point C.
The trigger may be made of sheet metal, bent around the rod, which constitutes the pivot of bearings. The central part is cut out to allow the pin to drop through, and a part of that which is cut out may form the lip C.
I am aware that triggers of various forms located in the draw-head have been before known, and do not broadly claim such; but
That I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The trigger T, constructed as shown and described, having the opening S and lip G pivoted in front of the pin-hole, and operating substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
