WIKLBUR wOoDs, OF TERBEHATE, INDIANA.
Goor.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILBUR WOODS, a citi-` zen of the United States, residing at Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Coops, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in coops or crates of that class employed for the shipment of fowls or vegetables orother articles, the primary object of the invention being to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which may be readily -folded or knocked down to provide a small package after the contents of the coop or crate have been removed, and which is also provided with effective means for sustaining the coop or crate in its set up position.
With the above objects in view, and others which will appear as the description of the invention progresses, the improvement resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fullyl described and claimed. In the drawings, accompanying this specification, there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement, it being understood, however, that the showing therein is merely illustrative and that changes in the minor details of construction, which fall within the scope of the appended claim, may be resorted to if desired. y l
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement in its set up position. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a view of the device in its folded position. The coop is made up of a base 1, sides 2, ends 3 and a top 4. The base 1 is formed of two members, 6 and 7 respectively which have their meeting edges hinged as at 8, and which, when in a spread position are of a size equaling the size of the coop. The hinges 8 permit of the sections 6 and 7 being swung upwardly, and sustain the said sections in a horizontal plane when the coop is in its set up position. The outer longitudinal edges of the sections 6 and 7 are also hingedly connected as at 9 and 10 with the lower bars or members of the frames of the sides 2. The top 4 also comprises a pair of sections 11 and 12. `These sections are centrally connected through the medium of reiterated nay e, mie.
Appiieation med April c, 1912. y serial No. 688,984.
members or sections comprising the top are hinges are secured to posts 17, the said posts being of a width equaling the thickness of the end posts or Stiles of the vertical members of the side frames. Hingedly secured,
as at 1S, with each of the posts 17 are the rectangular frames 19 forming the ends 3 of the coop. These frames have their upper members provided with eyes 20, the latter adapted to receive the hooks carried by the sections of the top 4. The sides 3 have their upper portions or members underlying the sections of the top 4 so as to support the said top, while the lower members of the sides overlie the sections of the base 1, and thus sustain all of the sections of the coop in a proper set up position. The lower members of the frames forming the ends 3, adjacent their hinged connections with the posts 17 are provided with pivoted hooks or analogous devices 21, which are adapted to engage with eyes 22, provided upon the lower vertical Stiles oi the side frames 2. One of the side frames 2, which may be termed the front of the coop is provided with a door 23, the latter comprising a lower member 24 having its ends provided with openings which engage the bars 5 to the opposite sides of the door 23. rlhe member 24 also carries a plurality of bars 25, and these bars are adapted to extend through openings 26 provided in the top member of the said sides. By this arrangement, it will be noted that the door may be readily slid in an upward direction so as to obtain access to the coop for removing the fowls therefrom. The frames comprising the front, back and sides are provided with vertically arranged spaced rods or bars 5.
In collapsing the coop, the posts 17 are first swung upon their hinges so that the said posts lie flush with the vertical Stiles of .the sides to which they are connected.
top and bottom are swungfor foldedfvvithif`- the coop, and the device is thus collapsed to provide a small package. It is to be under-5" stood that the Width of the one section 'of the top' andone section of the botton'ap-- proximately equals the height of theisides'. s When the device is folded, as above described, any suitable retainingvfdevice, such as a cordzor the like, may be employed to prevent* the accidental swinging o=f1the.ends, but,v from experience, it has :beenafound-` that such secu-ring devices-are not'Qgeiiera'l'ly:fneoessary..
