Ie vrrme DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LINUS WOLF, sub ect of the German Emperor, residing at Zurich,
1' Switzerland, have invented a certain new igniting devices for gas lamps, and has for its object to provide a new and improved dc vice of this description.
- The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein tional view taken on line44 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a view of the support for the spark producing device as stamped out and prior to being bent into shape.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several figures.
In the drawings, I have illustrated a gas burner 1 particularly adapted for lamps used in connection with automobiles. A11 igniting device 2 is connected with the burner. This igniting device comprises a support which is preferably made from a single piece of metal. As herein shown, this support consists of a body portion 3 having projections 4 and 5 which are provided with openings 6 for the pin 7 carrying therotatable part of the device. Connected with the projection 5 is a piece 8 adapted to be bent so as to form a receptacle or receiving devicefor the spark producing material. A stop piece 9 also projects from the body portion and acts as a stop for the rotating part. An engaging piece 10 projects from the body portion and is adapted to be bent around so as to engage the burner 1. This engaging piece is cut away at'll and there is a hook projection 1.2 connected with the body portion to which is connected the end of the spring 13 which presses the spark producing material against the rotating part. The engaging part 10 is provided with an opening 1 1 and a body portion with. an opening 15 which are opposed to each other when the engaging part is bent around and Patented May 2, iaie.
Application filed August 5, 1912. SerialNo. 713,221.
which the igniting device is held in place 011 the burner. The support is first stamped out as shown in. Fig.6 and the parts are then bent to the positions shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The openings'G-in the projecting parts 4 and 5am then opposed to each other. A cylindrical part 16 is then placed between the parts 4 and 5. This cylindrical part is supported upon the pin 7 and is. hollow, there being located inside of it a coil spring 17 having one end l8 engaging the support so as to be held stationary. The other end is formed into a loop 19 which projects through a hole 20 in thecylindrical part and which actsas a handle for rotatingthe cylindrical part. By grasping thehandle 19the cylindrical part is rotated and the spring 17 energized; When the handle 19 is released, the spring presses the cylindrical part back until the spring. strikes the stop 9. Upon the end of the cylindrical part is a roughened part 21. This roughenedpartis preferably made of steel or other hardened material and may be in the form of a file. The rotating part is reduced in diameter near its end and the roughened part formed into a circular form with the ends separated by a space, that is, the roughened part does not form a complete circle. A projecting part 22 on the cylindrical part extends into the space between the ends of the roughened partso as to prevent the roughened. part from rotating onthe cylindrical part. This projection may be formed in any desired manner as by upsetting or mutilating the rotating part so as to force the metal thereof outwardly at this point. The pin 7 passes through the rotating part and into the opening 6 and is held inplace in any desired manner as by upsetting or battering the ends thereof. The piece 8 is bent" around so that the ends are in proximity to each other as shown in Fig. 5 and is located above the piece of roughened material 21.
A piece 23 of spark producing material, such for example, as pyrophorus material, is loosely placed in the receptacle or receiving device formed by the piece 8 and a follower device 24 is inserted therein so as to engage the spark producing metal and is force said metal against the surface of the roughened piece 21. As illustrated in the drawing, a bolt 26 1s passedthroujgh the openings 14 and 15 and is provided with a nut 27* which may be tightened so as to clamp the igniting deviceto the burnerr It" will be noted that the spark producing .device consists of the spark producing'metal and the roughenedpiece 21 is arranged so that the spark'is' discharged directly toward" the burner. In other Words, there-*is a spark opening 28 arranged in the support 3 opposite the-"burnen and this sp' 'rkopening is arranged with relation to the engagingdevice 10 sothat it wi11-point directlytoward the burner regardless of theposition of th e-l'igniting devices In" other words; if
the-- igniting device is rotated entirely: around=*tlieburner,.this spark opening w-ill' be pointed directly toward the burner at every'rppint around the entire circle soas to discharge sparks directly toward 'theb'urn'er in *every position it occupiesthroughbut its entire'circlew It 5 will be noted" that 5 the present device is *small so that it occupies very"v little space' burner as'shown' for example inFig-tl. Y The gias isrthen' turned on'and the-handle'19*is' moved away from-the stop 91 This move ment 1 being; performed by the hand will be comparativelyisl'ow: After beingiimo ved a part of a*-=revolution,- th'e handle is: released and the energized spring rapidly moves therotating part and the roughened part 21 back to"their initial -position; The rouglr ened part moves: along the lower surface of i the spark --producingi metal 23 at a comp'ara tively high speed and causes pans-tabed'isch'arged therefrom througlrthe spark opening-28 directly "upon the gas emerging I from the end of the burner: The gas" is thereupon-' ignited."
This device" in addition"- to being simple in construction is reliable and will last 1 a longtime. It permits the burner to be lighted without matches and it acts regardless of'wind, rain-or atmospheric conditions.
I claim':
1. An igniting: device "for gaslamps comprising a rotatable'p'art; a' support upon which it is mounted, a spring connected with said rotatable part and with afixed part associated with said support, a portion of'sa'id spring bentoutward-ly so as to for'mia handie by means-ofwhich said movable part is moVed and Said spring energized, a' spark Copies 0! this patent may be-obtained"for producing device associated with said movable part and located in-the plane of the burner and an engaging device on said support for conneetin it with the burner.
2, An igniting device for gas lamps com- "p'risin'g a spark producing device, a movable part for actuating the spark producing device, a support therefor made up of a single pieee= of--material, a portion of said support bent so as to form an engaging device for the burnerg'a spring associated with said-movable part; a portion of I said spring projecting: laterally therefrom so as toact as a handle for manipul'atingit i and 1 a stop engaging said projecting portion of the spring-so" as'to limit its movement;
3. An igniting device for gas lamps-comprisingfira rough pieceformed into a circular form with the ends separated by a space, a cylindrical part: projecting through said roughened part and having'a portion thereof bent outwardly into the space between the ends of said roughened part, a pieceof spark producing metal adapted to beengaged by said Toughened part 'and means for connecting said parts to the lamp? burner.
1. Ail-igniting device for gas lamps 'comprising; a body portion, an engaging part integral: therewith, adapted'to' be'connected with 5 the burner, a receivingzdevice for the spark producing material formed" integralnvith said body portion, two proj ecting parts on'said body ortion, amovable part mounted-between said projecting parts and adapted when moved-tofrictionally engage thesparlrproducing material, an actuatin gspring connected with said movable part and'an'dn'closing piece inclosing said spring; and i mounted between said projections.-
5n An igniting device for lamps comprising'a roughened piece, formed into a curved form, with the ends separated by a space,
a cylindrical'part projecting through said roughened part; said cylindrical part provided with an -engaging 1 devicebetween the ends of said curved roughened 'part, adapt ed to engage said ends and hold said roughened partagainstnrotation with relation to said cylindricalpart, a piece of spark pro ducing" material adapted to be engaged by said roughenedpart anda-supporting device by means of which thepartsare connect'ed to the lamp burner;
