To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ERNST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented an Improvement in Liquid-Measuring Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in measuring devices and has particular reference to a beer measure.
An object of the invention is the provision of novel means connected to a receptacle for automatically indicating, by the weight of the liquid therein, when a predetermined amount has been poured into the same.
Another object is to provide a novel construction of frame and measuring device for supporting the receptacle in connection therewith, said measuring device having adjustable means whereby the amount of liquid to be measured may be varied.
A further object is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, durable and eflective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, the numeral 5 indicates a receptacle or container, made of any preferred material, into which the liquid is adapted to be poured. The receptacle 5 is adapted to be pivotally supported in an open frame generally indicated by 6 and preferably consisting of a single length of heavy wire bent to provide top and bottom rings 7 and 8, respectively, said rings being of a slightly larger diameter than the receptacle. The frame also comprises diametrically opposed twisted standards or uprights 9 and 10, the wire forming the latter standard being spaced intermediate the ends thereof to form a longitudinal slot 11, for a purpose which will appear in the course of the description. The frame 6 is also provided at the top of the standard 10 with a handle 12.
At points nearer the standard 10 than the standard 9 the rings 7 and 8 have secured thereto on each side of said standard the braces 13. The measuring device used in connection with the invention is pivoted intermediate its ends to the braces 13 as indicated at 14: and comprises a single length of wire bent upon itself to provide an arm 15 twisted at 16 and having its ends curved in opposite directions to provide a yoke 17 which partially embraces the receptacle 5. Intermediate the pivoted oints 14 and the extremities of the yoke 1% the latter is also pivoted to the receptacle 5 as indicated at 18, so that said receptacle will be suspended a slight distance above the bottom ring 8. The twisted portion 16 of the arm 15 is adapted to extend through the slot 11 formed in the standard 10 and when the receptacle 5 is emptied the arm will assume a downwardly extending position, as shown in Fig. 1, by reason of the counterbalancing weight 19 adjustably mounted on said arm 15 by means of a set screw 20, said twisted portion 16 then engaging the bottom of said slot.
In use, as soon as a predetermined amount of liquid has been poured into the receptacle 5, said amount being regulated by adjusting the weight 19 back and forth on the arm 15, the action of said weight will be overcome and the extremities of the yoke 17 be forced downwardly, which in turn will raise the arm 15 carrying the weight so that the parts will assume a substantially horizontal position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the upward movement of the arm 15 being limited by contact with the upper end of the slot 11.

In a measuring device, the combination of a receptacle, a frame consisting of a single length of wire bent to form top and bottom rings and twisted standards, the wire forming one of said standards being spaced to provide a slot, supporting braces connecting said rings, a measuring device pivoted intermediate its ends to said braces and also pivoted to said receptacle, said device extending through and being limited in its movements by the ends of said slot, and an g I w.

3. In a measuring device, the combination of a receptacle, a supporting .frame therefor and in which the receptacle is verticall 20 movable and consisting of a single length of Wire bent to provide top and bottom rings and standards, braces connecting said rings, and a Weighing lever pivoted to said receptacle and also to said braces.
