Above the key-levers 4 and extending transversely of the machine is a curved supporting bar 7 provided with vertical parallel erfs or slots 8, in which are pivotally supported bell crank levers 9 connected through links 10 to the key levers. By reference to Figs. 11, 12 and 13, it will be seen that the bell cranks 9 are provided with spherical bearings 11, which are received in cylindrical openings 12, formed by recesses in the slots 8. A slotted retaining plate 13 is removably fitted over the bar 7 to secure the bell crank levers in position. The typebars 2 are pivoted on the curved pivot rod 14, supported in the type-bar segment 15, which is formed with radially disposed slots 16 to receive the type-bars. Links 17 connect the type-bars with the bell crank levers 9` It will be observed that the type-bar and the operating mechanism therefor are so related, that the vertical movement of the type-bar segment to ra'ised or lowered position will simply swing the link 17 about its connection with the bell crank as a fulcrum. The position of the key levers therefore remains unchanged during the shifting of the segment, and the type bar action is also unaffected by a change in the position of the segment. The type-bar segment 15 is formed with forwardly extending arms 18, to which is attached a basket 19, provided with a pad 20 forming a support for the type-bars. The type-bar segmentk is supported and guided in its vertical movement by 'the legs 21 guided between vertical members 22 of the machine frame. The parts 21 and 22 are formed with recesses 23 to receive anti-friction guide rollers 24 which prevent any movement of the segment frame except in a vertical direction. The construction of this frame and the means for supporting and guiding it in its shifting movement are set forth in my patent above referred to, and need not further be described here.
The key-board, in addition to the twentysix keys above referred to, may additionally comprise a set of decimal tabulator keys 25, ten of such keys being'shown in Fig. 6. As the tabulating mechanism does not form a part of the present invention, it has not been illustrated in the drawings.
Capital shift keys A and A', a figure shift key C, and a character shift key D are provided for shifting the segment frame and the platen. A back-spacer key and a margin release key may also be employed, but illustration thereof has been omitted as being unnecessary to an understanding of the present invention. The shift keys A, A', C, and D are carried respectively by levers 26, 27, 28 and 29, each fulcrumed on the rod 5. The mechanism for lifting the type-bar segment simultaneously with the lowering of t e platen and vice-versa, comprises a rock shaft 30 extending across the machine and journaled at its ends in the frame, and a cam disk 31 fixed to the rock shaft. Rock arms 32 are also secured to said shaft and extend forward into slots 33 formed in the legs 21 of the segment frame. The arms 32 are slotted to receive pins 34 carried by the legs 21. This construction provides a positive operating connection between the rock 30 and the segment so that the latter is moved up or down in a vertical direction while said Shaft is rocked.
The platen 35 is supported by a shift rail 36 connected at its ends to rock arms 37 extending forward from a supporting bar 38. r1`he platen frame 39 carries a rod.40 to which is secured a bracket 41. A guide roller 42 carried by the bracket 41 runsv on theshift rail 36, the bracket 41 extending beneath said rail to prevent the platen from being lifted independently of the rail. Crank arms 43 extending rearwardly from the rock shaft 30 are .connected through links 44 to the arms 37. The operating mechanism between the capital shift key levers and the rock shaft 3 comprises a rock shaft 45 carrying rock arms 46 and 47 having projections in the path of the shift key levers 26 and 27 respectively. Integral with the arm 46 is an upwardly extending arm 48, adapted to engage in a notch 49 formed in the disk 31. When either of the capital shift keys is depressed, the shaft 45 is rocked and carries the arm 48 rearwardly to the position shown in Fig. 3, thereby rocking the shaft 30 in a direction to lower the type bar segment and lift the platen. The relative position of the segment andthe platen is now such that when the type keys are operated, the upper case types a are brought up to the platen. When the capital shift key is released, the type-bar segment and the platen are restored to initial position by means of a roller 50 bearing on the cam surface 51 of the disk 31. The roller 50 is carried by a rock arm 52 mounted on a stationary pivot 53 and operated by a spring 54.
lVhen the shift key D is depressed, the rock shaft` 30 is rotated in the opposite di-A rection by means of an arm 55 which engages a notch 56 in the cam disk 31 and rotates the latter to the posi-tion shown in Fig. 4. The arm 55 is secured to a rock shaft 57 which carries an arm 58 beneath the shift key lever 29' and in position to be operated thereby. When the shift key D is depressed, the rock shaft is vrotated in a direction to swing the arms 32 upward,vand the arms 43 dowlnward so that the type-bam segment and platen are brought to their 'highest and lowest position respectively.
vThe lever 28 of the figureshift key G is connected through a link 58 toa lever 59 having a pivotal connection 60 With a bracket 61 secured to the frame of the machine. The forward end of the lever 59 is adapted to engage in a notch 62 of the disk 31,.and rotate the latter to the intermediate position shown in Fig. 5, so that the type-bars, when operated carry the type c up to the platen. A tail 63 of the lever 59 engages beneath the bracket 61 and limits the movement of the lever. lVhen the disk 31 is operated either to the position showny in Fig. 5 or that of Fig. 4, the roller 50 rides up the ineline 64, and when the shift key is released, pressure of the roller on said incline returns the disk and the parts operated thereby to initial position. The rotation of the disk in both directions is limited by a' depending arm 65 secured to the shaft 30, and ing between the rock shafts 45 and 57.
The platen is vertically movable in the carriage frame 66, being supported and guided by bearing blocks 67, in which the axle 68 of the platen is journaled. The blocks 67 move in guides 69 of the carriage frame, anti-friction bearing rollers or balls 70 supported in a cage 71, being interposed 'between the bearing block and the frame. The blocks 67 are provided with Iianges 72 projecting beyond the edges of the guides 69. The platen is supported by rock arms 73 fixed to a rock shaft '74 and having bifurated ends 75 to straddle the platen axle 68.
The universal trame F, (F 9 and 10) consists of two relatively movable members 7G and 77. The membei` 77 is formed with a vertical section 78 provided with slots 79 through which extend shouldered screws SO threaded into the member T6. thereby permitting a relative vertical .movement of the two members. The member To has an arcshaped iange S1 located behind the typebars in position to be engaged by each typebar as the latter is operated and thereby move the frame F. The frame is guided in its horizontal movement by pins 82 fixed to the Segment 15 and extending through sleeves 83 secured to the member 7G. The
member horizontal movement 84 (Fig. 2) secured to a stud 85 on the frame of the machine. The upper end of the bar -1 extends horizontally and carries a shouldered screw 8G which extends through a slot 87 formed in the member ."7 and permits the latter to slide on its support 84. The frame F is connected through levers 88 to the escapement mechanism which may be of the usual construction employed in the Underwood machine: The construction of the frame F; as above described, permits the member 76, attached to the segment frame, to move up and down therewith when the shift keys are operated. without changing the position of the member 77. and permits the same operation of the escapement mech- 77 is supported and guided in its extendof rest.

1. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type-bar segment, type-bars, means for operating the type-bars, a platen, and means to simultaneously shift the typebar segment and platen, each in opposite directions from its normal position of rest.

In a ty '-iewriting machine, the combination of a platen, means to shift the platen in opposite directions from its normal operative position to loperative shifted positions, type-bars, a frame carrying said bars, and means to shift said frame simultaneously with the platen but in a vreverse direction, each of said type-bars comprising types, one positioned to strike the platen at the printing point when the platen is in said normal position, and the others positioned respectively to strike the platen at the printing point when the platen is in said shifted positions.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, shift keys, mechanism between said keys and the platen for lifting the platen when one key is operated and for lowering the platen when another key is operated, type-bars, a frame in which said type-bars are pivoted, and mechanism. to lower and lift said frame respectively when the platen is lifted and lowered. l
10. In aI typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, type-bars, four printing characters carried by each type-bar, and` `mechanism for moving and supporting the platen in four different positions corresponding to said characters, said mechanism comprising keys operable to bring the platen to three of said positions, and means to automatically return the platen to ne fourth position when the operated key`is released.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, independently operable shift keys, mechanism operated by said keys independently' to shift the platen different distances from normal position in besame direction and also in the opposite direction from normal position, each of said keys being supported and maintained in its normal position of rest during the operation of the other keys, type-bars, type carried thereby in positions corresponding to the positions o the` platen, and means to operate the type-bars.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination vof a platen, a shift key, mechanism associated therewith to shift the platen in one direction, and a plurality of additional shift keys operable to shift the platen different distances in the reverse direction.
13. In a. typewriting machine, the combination of afplaten, shift keys and associatedmechanism operable to shift the platenin opposite directions fromV a normal position of rest, a type-bar segment, means to move the se ment simultaneously with the platen but in the reverse direction, and means to automatically return the segment and platen to normal position when the shift keys are released.
14. In a typewritin ymachine, the combination of type-bars, our different charac' ters carried by each typebar, a laten having four rest positions correspon ing .to the four characters of a type-bar, means for selectively shifting the platen to each of said positions and stopping it in the selected position, a supporting frame in which said type-bars are pivoted, and means to shift said frame simultaneously with the shifting of the platen. d
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, type-bars, a frame supporting said type-bars, vertical guides for said frame and platen, a rock-shaft, rock arms carried thereby, connections between the rockl arms and said frame and platen, a key for rocking the rock shaft in one'direction from its normal position of rest, and `thereby shifting the platen and said frame vertically 1n opposite directions, and a key. for rocking said shaft in the reverse direction from said position of rest and thereby shift the platen and said frame in the opposite directions fronithose in which they are shifted by the first-mentioned key.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a type-bar segment, a rock shaft, means to rock said shaft in either direction from anormalposition of rest, means to automatically return said shaft to said normal position, rock arms extending. in opposite directions from the rock shaft, connections between said arms, the platen and said segment, and guiding means to effect a straight line parallel movement of the platen and segment when the said shaft is rocked.

In a typewriting machine, the cornbination of a platen, a supporting frame therefor, a segment frame, type-bars supported thereby, a rock shaft, a rock arm secured thereto and operatively connected to the segment frame, a second rock arm secured to saidv shaft, means connecting said second arm'to said supporting frame, shift keys, .operating connections between the shift keys and said rock shaft for rocking the shaft in either direction from its normal position of rest, and means to guide the segment frame and `platen in vertical straight lines when the shaft is rocked. i

In a typewritingimaohine, the combination of a platen, a type-bar segment frame, a rock shaft, shift keys, mechanism between said keys and the rock shaft for rotating the latter in opposite directions from a normal position of rest, means to return the rock shaft to its initial position when the shift keys are released, and connections between the rock'shaft, the platen, and the segment frame.
20. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a frame supporting the platen` a rock shaftl` a shift key, means operated thereby to rock the shaft, a cam carried by said shaft, means to operate said cam and cause the cam to return the shaft when the shift key is released, and a connection between the rock shaft and said supporting frame for lifting and lowering said frame when the shaft is rocked.
21. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a typebar segment frame, a rock shaft rotatable in either direction from an initial position of rest, shift keys for operating the rock shaft` a cam secured to said shaft, a device coperating with said cam to automatically restore the rock shaft to initial position when the shift keys are released. and connections between the rock shaft, the segment frame and the platen, for shifting said frame and platen when the rock shaft is rocked.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a type-bar segment, type-bars pivotally supported therein. and extending forward in a substantially horizontal direction, a support for the forward ends of the type-bars, bell-cranks, a stationary support therefor, links connected to the type-bars and extending forward to the bell-cranks for pivotal engagement therewith, key-levers operatively connected to the bell-cranks and imparting forward and rearward movement to the bell-cranks at their points of pivotal engagement with the links. means for lifting and lowering the type-bar segment to positions above and below its normal position of rest, and means for lowering and lifting the platen to positions below and above its normal position of rest, the said movements of the segment and platen being simultaneous in opposite directions, said links arranged to swing about their points of connection with the bell-cranks during the lifting and lowering of the type-bar segment while the bellcranks remain at rest,
23. In a typewriting machine, the combination of type-bars; a supporting frame therefor: means for lifting andlowering said frame and type-bars; and a universal frame comprising Inechanicallyconnected members relatively `movable in a vertical direction, one of said universal frame members being supported on the first-named frame so as to be lifted and lowered therewith, and being disposed in position to be operated by the type-bars, said universal frame moving as a. unit without relative movement of its said component members when operated by the typwbars.
2l. ln a tvpewriting machine. the combination of a type-bar segment; type-bars carried thereby; means for lifting and lowering said segment and type-bars; and a universal frame comprising two members mechanically connected together for movement relatively to each other in a vertical direction. one of said members being connected to said segment as to be lifted and lowered therewith while the other member remains stationary, and being located in position to be operated by said type-bars, said universal frame moving' as a unit without relative movement of its said component members when operated by the type-bars.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a typebar segment, tvpe-ba carried thereby. means for lifting and lowering said segment`r a universal frame comprising a member supported by the segment and movable in a horizontal direction. and a second member slidably connected to Said first named member for vertical movement relative thereto. permitting said second member to remain at rest while the firstnan'ied member moves up and down with said segment. said sliding connection preventing relative movement of said members in a horizontal direction.
In a typewriting machine, the combination of a type-*bar segment, typebars carried thereby.r means for lifting and lown ering the segment. a universal frame bodily movable in a horizontal direction, said frame comprising a member supported by the segment and movable "ith the segment when the latter is lifted and lowered, and a rearwardly extending member having a sliding connection with said first named member, and means to support said second named member in a horizontal position and hold it against vertical movement, said sliding connection preventing relative movement of said frame members in a horizontal direction.

In a front-strike typewriting.machine, the combination lwith a revoluble platen, of a type-bar support, type-bars mounted thereon to swing upwardly and rearwardly to the front face of the platen, keys to actuate the type-bars, shift keys operable to shift said support through different distances in the same direction from a normal position of rest to different case positions, said type-bars comprisin l,types to strike the platen at the printing lline when thesaid support is in its normal position of rest,
types for each of said case positions to strike the platen at the printing line when the said support is shifted by said shift keys, and a shift key operable to shift said type-bar support in the opposite direction from its normal position of rest, said typebars having types thereon to strike the platen at the printing point When the support is in said last-mentioned shifted position.
28. In a typevvriting machine, the combination of a platen, a type-bar support, typebars mounted thereon, a shift key, mechanism controlled thereby to shift said support in one direction from a normal position of rest, a. plurality of additional shift keys operable to shift the said support different distances in the reverse direction to different case positions, and types carried by 'the type-bars in positions corresponding to each of said positions of the said support.
29. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, of a type-bar support, type-bars mounted thereon to swing to printing position at thc platen, shift keys, means operated thereby to shift the platen and type-bar support in opposite directions from a normal position of rest when either shift key is operated, the directions in which the platen and said support are shifted when one shift key is operated being the reverse to the directions in which they are shifted when the other shift key is operated, stops to limit the shifting movements of the platen and type-bar support by said keys, and thereby determine the shifted positions of the platen and said support, and means to automatically restore the parts to their normal positions of rest When the shift keys are released.
30. `In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen,'of a type-bar support, type-bars mounted thereon to 'swing to printing position at the platen, shift keys,

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a type-bar support, of type-bars mounted on said support to swing to printing position at the platen, means forming a connector between the platen and said support for causing them to shift in opposite directions when either the platen or said support is shifted in either direction from its normal position of rest, a shift key for operating' said connector to shift the' platen and said support each to one limit of its movement, a second shift key to move the platen and said support each to the opposite limit of its movement, stops to determine said limits, and means to re- .store the platen and said support to their normal positions of rest when the shift keys are released.
32. In a typewriting machine, the combination With a platen and a type-bar support, of* type-bars mounted on said support to swing to printing position at the platen, means forming a connector Vbetween the platen and said support for causing them to shift in opposite directionswhen either the platen 'or said support is shifted in either direction from its normal position of'rest, a shift key for operating said connector to shift the platen and said support each to one limit of its movement, a second shift key to move the platen and said support each to the opposite limit of its movement, stops to determine said limits, means to restore the platen and said support t0 their normal positions oflrest when the shift keys are released, an additional shift key operable to shift the platen and said support in the same directions from their normal positions of rest as they are shifted by one of the first-mentioned shift keys, but through less distances, and a stop automatically made effective by the operation of said additional shift key to determine the limit of movement of the platen and said support by said additional key.
33. In a typewritingr machine, the combination with a platen, ot' a type-bar support, a rock shaft, rock arms on said shaft and connected respectively to the platen and said support, for shifting the platen and support in opposite directions when the shaft is rocked, shift keys for rocking said yshaft in opposite direct-ions and thereby shifting the platen and said support from a normal position of rest to different case positions, a cam secured to said shaft and having oppositely inclined cam faces, and a centering roller, normally engaging said cam faces with a lyielding pressure to hold the rock shaft in its normal position of rest, said roller arranged to ride np one cam face when the shaft is rocked in one direction, and to ride up the other cam face when the shaft is rocked in the opposite direction from its normal position of rest, said roller operable automatically to restore said rock shaft to said normal position when the shift keys are released.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen,l0f a type-bar support, type-bars mounted thereon, means to shift said support up and down to different case positions, a universal bar frame comprising a pair of mechanically-connected parts, one mounted on said support to shift up and down therewith, so that its position relative to the type-bars is unaffected by the shifting` of the said support, and comprising a universal bar lying in the path of the typebars and operated thereby during;` the type strokes to move said part rearwardly, and the other part being connected to the first part to move therewith as a unit in a forward and rearward direction, said other part having,r a vertical sliding connection with the first part to permit the latterto shift up and down with said support while said other part remains at rest, and supporting means on which said other part is mounted for forward and rearward movement.
