JAMES F. JAMES, 015 DALTON, GEORGIA.
COOKING RANGE OR STOVE.
Application filed October 26, 1915.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES FRANKnIN JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dalton, in the county of Whitfield, State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Cooking Range or Stove; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved cooking range or stove, and an object of the invention is to provide means, whereby at one time the top sheet, the bottom sheet, and the two end sheets of the oven may be heated, thereby thoroughly heating the oven.
Another object of the invention is to provide means, whereby at another instant, only the. entire top sheet of the oven may be thoroughly heated.
The heating of the oven sheet in the two manners as above stated is attained by the manipulation of two dampers simultaneously, the closing of a slide damper causing rocking damper to open, and vice versa.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a cooking range or stove showing the same constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a sectional perspective view, showing the arrangement and construction of the dampers. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view showing the connection between the two dampers, whereby the opening of one closes the other and vice versa. Fig. 5 is a detail view partly in elevation and partly in section showing the slide damper 30 closed and the pivoted damper 23 open. v
Referring to the drawings more especially, 1 designates the casing of the range or stove provided with a fire box 2, ash pit 3, and oven 4. The partition 5 divides the casing to form the fire box and the ash pit. The top and bottom sheets 6 and 7, and the end sheets 8 and 9 of the oven, are spaced within and from the top and bottom sheets 10 and 11, and the end sheet 12, and the partition 5 of the casing, thereby providing a flue or pas- Specification of Letters Patent.

sage 13 extending from the fire box entirely across the top sheet 6 of the oven, down between the end sheet 8 of the oven and the end sheet 12 of the casing as shown at 14, between the bottom sheet 7 of the oven and the bottom sheet 11 of the casing, and then upwardly between the end sheet 9 of the oven and the partition 5 of the casing, and then through the opening 15 of the back sheet of the casing, and then upwardly at 16 into the space 17 and thence through the outlet flue 18.
When it is desired to thoroughly heat the top and bottom and the two end sheets of the oven, the products of combustion in the fire box are allowed to pass through the flue 13, in order to encircle the oven. Arranged in the passage 19 of the fine 13 is a bafiie plate 20, thereby dividing the passage 19 into two spaces 21 and 22. Arranged in one end of the space 22 near the fire box is a damper 23 having its pintles 24- and 25 mounted in bearings of the partition 20 or baffle plate, and the back sheet of the casing, so that said damper may swing downwardly to an open position as shown in the drawings, using the pintles 2st and 25 as fulcrums. When the damper 23 is closed, it assumes a very slight inclination toward the space 22, so that when said damper is released by means to be described, it will tilt open by gravitation, using the pintles 2-l and 25 as fulcrums. The pintle 25 terminates in a right angle extending arm 27, which extends upwardly, but upon an inclination just opposite to the inclination of the damper 23, which arm 27 is located in the upper part of the space 16. The upper portion of the back sheet 28 of the casing forms the back wall of the space 22, and which back wall or upper part of the back sheet 28 is provided with a series of openings 29. A slide plate damper 30 is arranged in the space or passage 17 adjacent the upper part of the ack sheet 28 and is provided with openings 31, designed to cooperate with the openings 29. The end 32 of the plate damper 30 at its upper portion is provided with a pair of spaced lugs 33, extending through a slot 34 of the top part of the back sheet 28 of the casing.
Pivoted at 35 to the back sheet 28 of the casing is a lever 36 operable in the slot 37 in the upper plate of the casing or range. This lever 36 engages between the lugs 33, so that by moving the lever 36 in one direction or the other, the damper plate may be moved, so as to throw the openings 29 and 31 in and out of registration. The end 38 of the damper plate 30 has an extension 39, which is formed with a laterally extending arm 40, to cooperate with the arm 27. It will be observed that the lever 36 may be oscillated so as to move the damper plate 30, so that the openings 29 and 81 are in registration, in which case the arm "10 will bear against the arm 27, so as to hold the damper 23 closed, or raised, in which case the damper 23 will act as a baffle plate at one end of the fire box, thereby causing the products of combustion to take a direct draft through the space 21 around the right hand end of the baffle plate 20, directly through the space 22, and then out through the openings 29 and 31, making exit through the outlet flue 18 direct, thereby heating the top sheet 6 of the oven only. hen operating the lever 36 to move the damper plate 30 so as to throw the opening 29 and 31 out of registration, the damper 23 is lowered or tilted downward to an open position, thereby causing the products of combustion from the fire box to pass through the two spaces 21 and 22 of the flue 13, down through the portion 1d of the fine 13, under the oven, then upwardly and outwardly through the opening 15, upwardly at 16, into the space 17, and then out through the outlet flue 18, thereby heating the top and bottom sheet and the two end sheets 8 and 9 of the oven.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In combination with a cooking stove or range having an oven, and provided with a fine extending from the fire box across the top sheet of the oven, down adjacent one end sheet of the oven, under the oven, upwardly and rearwardly, then laterally at the rear top portion of the oven and terminating in an outlet flue, a baflie plate in the upper passage of said flue dividing the upper passage into forward and rear passages and rear passages or spaces, a damper fulcrumed across the left hand end of the rear passage to swing inwardly and downwardly, the rear wall of the rear passage having a plurality of openings communicating the rear passage and the terminus of the flue at the upper rear portion of the oven, a slide damper having openings designed to be thrown into communication with the openings in therear wall, the fulcrumed damper having its fulcrum provided with an arm disposed angularly to the fulcrumed damper, said slide damper having abutting connections with said arm, whereby as the slide damper is moved so that its opening will register with the openings in the rear wall the fulcrumed damper will be closed and vice versa, the rear wall of the rear passage having a slot, a forked lug extending through said slot, means engaging said forked lug to slide the damper, and a slot and pin connection to guide the slide damper.
2. In combination with a cooking stove or range having an oven, and provided with a fine extending from the fire box across the top sheet of the oven, down adjacent one end sheet of the even, under the oven, upwardly and rear-wardly, then laterally at the rear top portion of the oven and terminating into an outlet flue, a baflie plate in the upper passage of said flue dividing the upper passage in forward and rear passages or spaces, a damper fulcrumed across the left hand end of the rear passage or space, the rear wall of the rear space or passage having openings, a slide damper to control said opening, both of said dampers having loose connections, whereby as the slide damper is operated to open the opening the fulcrumed damper will be closed, and vice versa, so i Basics of this patent. may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
