SALVE-APPLICATOR.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1916.
Application led February 18, 1915. Serial No. 9,155.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JEREMLAH BALLARD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Kelso,in the county of Cowlitz and State of Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Salve-Applicators, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to salve applicators and has special reference to an efficient salve container for dispensing salve or unguent for the purpose ofl applying the salve to the vagina or the lower part of the uterus.
The principal object of the present invention is the production of a simple and efficient mechanical construction for limiting the reciprocating motion of the piston within the casing.
With' these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a longitudinal section through the device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section through the device showing the plunger head in cross section. Fig. 3 is a section taken' on line 3 3, of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4.-4, of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5, of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 6 6, of Fig. 2.
By referring to the drawing it will be seen that 1 designates the outer casing which is provided with an 'open discharge end at the forward end thereof and being slightly inturned as indicated by the numeral 2. The slightly inturning of the end as indicated by the numeral 2 will constitute an efiicient seat for receiving the plunger head 3 which is detachably secured to the outer end of the plunger 4 by being screw-threaded thereon. The plunger head 3 is provided with a sealing washer 5 around the side edges thereof for the purpose of constituting an efficient seal ortightly fitting means therefor. The plunger 4 is provided near one end thereof with a. worm screw thread 6 upon which are mounted a pair of stop nuts or collars 7 which are capable of being adjusted to any desired position upon the worm threads 6. The outer end of the plunger rod 4 works through the collar 7, and the plunger rod 4 has at its outer or extreme end an eye 8 for facilitating the operation of the plunger.
The casing l is provided with an enlarged annular shoulder 9 and a projecting screw threaded portion 10 upon which the internally screw-threaded portion 11 of the cap 7 is adapted to t. It should be understood that by means of this construction illustrated and described, the entire device may be disassembled for the purpose of cleaning or refilling when so desired. It is preferable to make the entire device out of hard rubber, although the same may be made of any suitable material without departing from the spirit of the invention.
It should be understood that the salve is placed in the outer end of the casing l, and the nuts or collars 7 which are knurled upon their outer faces to facilitate the adjustment thereof are placed in the desired position upon the threaded plunger 4 to limit the inward reciprocating movement of the plunger 4 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. It should be understood that the present device is especially adapted for use by the patient himself or by a physician, and that the movement of the plunger is limited in one direction, and this movement may be adjusted to suit the desire of the operator for the convenient use thereof.
It is, of course, obvious that when the nuts are first adjusted upon the screw threads 6 they will be spaced apart. If, however, the nut which engages the cap is caused to move along the screw threads due to continued impacts upon the cap, it will come into engagement with the other nut whereby the accidental movement of the rst nut will be limited since the engagement of the two nuts will constitute a locking action.
It should be understood that the cap is provided with an annular groove 8 around the side thereof for the purpose of facilitating the engagement of the device by the lingers of the operator in order to facilitate the operation of the plunger rod 4.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing having an inturned end, a cap carried upon the opposite end of said casing, a plunger slidably mounted upon said cap, said plunger provided with screwthreads, a plunger head carried upon the inner endof said plunger, whereby salve may be dispensed from said casing, a nut adjustably mounted upon said screw-threads, whereby said nut may come into engagement with said cap upon each stroke of said plunger for limiting the stroke of the plunger, and means for limiting the acoidentaLmovement of said nut along said screw-threads.
2. In a salve applicator of the classldescribed, the combination of a casing having an inturned end, a cap carried upon the opposite end of said casing, a plunger slidably mounted through said'cap, a plunger head carried upon the inner end of said rod, whereby salve may be dispensed from said casing, said plunger provided with screwthreads, a pair of nuts mounted upon said screw threads, one of said nuts being adapted to engage said cap upon each stroke of said plunger, thereby limiting the stroke of vsaidplunger7 ,theremaining nut being adapt- J.
