Description

(No Mode/1 W. H.-ROWLAND. DEVICE FOR INJEGTING MEDICAL POWDERS.
No. 443,545. Patented Dec. 30, 1890.

IVILLIAM II. ROIVLAND, OF ALBANY, OREGON.
DEVICE FOR INJECTING MEDICAL POWDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,545, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed January 18, 1890. Serial No. 387,374. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. ROWLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Linn and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Hand-Bellows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to a hand-bellows adapted to be used for the spraying or injecting of powders for medicinal or other purposes; and among the objects in view'are to provide such a device, the injector tube or nipple of which may be readily withdrawn for the purpose of filling and refilling the elastic bellows or bulb, and to provide a cap adapted to be screwed upon the nipple, whereby no loss of strength of the contents of the bellows can take place.
WVith these general objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particu larly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a hand-bellows constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal section of the nipple, and Fig. 4 a similar view in side elevation.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In practicing my invention I employ a rubber bulb or bellows 1, of a shape and size convenient to be grasped and compressed by the hand, and said bulb terminates at one end in a neck 2, having an opening 3 communicating with the interior of the bulb, the material surrounding said opening being formed considerably thicker than is the Wall of the bulb at other points, whereby the rigidity and strength of the neck are increased.
The discharge-tube at is provided with an annular disk or collar 5 at about its center, the periphery of which is milled, whereby the tube as a whole may be removed or disconnected from the bulb by the hand of the operator. The rear end of the tube is provided with a hemispherical head 6, somewhat larger than the outer diameter of the tube and the opening in the neck, whereby said head is designed to be forced into the opening, and by reason of its being slightly enlarged is prevented from too ready a withdrawal from the neck, the thickened portion of which fits snugly around the tube above the head and terminates at the rear side of the annular flange 5. The opposite end of the tube is somewhat larger and forms a nipple 7, conical at its end and having its exterior or body portion threaded, as at 8. The tube is provided with an internal bore 9, which at its outer extremity is reduced to a slight orifice 10, which occurs at the apex of the nipple. The nipple is surrounded by a leather washer 11, which rests upon the collar 5.
12 represents a removable cap having a milled outer surface 13 and internal threaded annular recess 14, adapted to engage the threads of the nipple, the end of the cap being designed for binding snugly against the washer and forming a tight joint.
The operation of my invention will be readily apparent from the foregoing description. The bulb is filled with powder, either of a medicinal or odorous nature, and by removin g the cap and slightly compressing the bulb the powder will be forced in fine jets through the orifice of the nipple.
Having described my invention, what I claim is In an atomizer, the combination, with the elastic bulb reduced at one end to form a neck the wall of which is thickened, of the removable metallic tube mounted in the neck, provided with a conical bore and at its inner end with a hemispherical head taking in rear of the thickened wall, with a circular milled disk beyond the neck and provided with external threads, the washer encircling the tube at the base of the threads and in front of the disk, and the internally-t-hreaded cap taking over the front end of the tube, substan ially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. ROWLAND.
