To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. Pownns, citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hypodermic Syringes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hypodermic syringes and hypodermic needles; and relates particularly to improvements in my invention entitled Hypodermic needle, for which U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,217 ,630, was granted February 2-7, 1917. It is an object of this invention to provide a simplified and improved construction of hypodermic syringe; and the invention which accomplishes this object will best be understood from the following detailed description of a preferred form of device, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved syringe; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same, enlarged; Fig. 3 is an enlarged View of a double ended form of needle held in the syringe; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of a single ended form of needle.
In the drawings the numeral 10 designates the barrel of the syringe and 11 the plunger thereof. The barrel has a suitable handle 12 and the plunger has a handle or knob 13. The syringe barrel and plunger are so constructed as to be used in any of the well known and ordinary manners.
In my former patent I have explained the needle as being mounted in an adapter cap which is mounted upon the end of the syringe body or barrel. In the present case I mount the hollow needle 14 directly upon the end of the body or barrel without the intervention of an adapter or other intermediate member. In the present case the barrel 10 has a conical end portion 15 with screw-threads 16 and a shoulder 17 at the base of the conical portion. A substantially conically shaped cap 18 screws over the conical end 15 of the barrel and holds the hollow needle in place. The end of the barrel has a bore 19 which passes the inner por tion 14 of the reversible double-ended needle 11; the plunger 11 having a hollow end at 20 to accommodate the inwardly projecting part of the needle. In case a shorter needle is used, the plunger neednot be hollowed so far from its end. The needle has a mounting collar 21 which is held between the conical end 15 of the body and the czup 18. This mounting collar may preferably consist of an outer ring 21 of hard material and an inner filling 21 of softer material; and the point of the part 15 bears against the inner soft filling of the mounting collar so as to compress that inner soft filling tightly around the needle when the cap 18 is put into place. 'The function of cap 18 is that of holding the mounting collar directly against the pointed or conical end 15 of the body; and this function of the cap 18 is the same regardless of what kind of mounting collar is used on the needle. For instance, in Fig. 4C the needle 14 may be a single ended needle with a semi-spherical mounting collar 21 on its end. Or the mounting collar may be of any character, and is held in position between part 15 and the cap 18. The cap is hollowed out in such a manner, as shown at 18 in Fig. 3, that if the mounting collar is expanded by reason of longitudinal compression it will not wedge in the cap, but it and the needle will always be easily removable therefrom.
Cap 18 may preferably be made octagonal in section, not only for appearance sake, but also for engagement by a wrench to screw it tightly into place.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the present invention has to do with the means for mounting the needle in, or connecting the needle to, the syringe itself; characterized by one element of the means being integral with the syringe and the other (the cap) mounted directly (screw-threaded) on the syringe body; and preferably not limited to any particular kind of mounting collar on the needle.
Having now described a preferred form of my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, a seat member and a cap screw threaded thereon, a needle passing through the cap, and having a mounting collar thereon in engagement at one end with the seat member, the cap having a conical interior cavity with its smaller end at the end of the cap where the needle passes through, the wall of the smaller end of the cavity bearing against the other end of the mounting collar, and the larger end of the cavity being larger than the smaller end which contains the mounting collar; V V

In a device of the character described a seat member substantially conical in form and having screw threads around its larger end, and a cap screw threaded thereon, a needle passing through the cap and-having a mounting collar thereon in engagement at one end with the smaller end of the seat the cap where the needle passes through,
thewall of the smaller end of the cavity bearing against the other end of the mount- "ing collar, and the larger end of the cavity being substantially larger than the mounting collar and having screw threads which screw onto the seat member.
