JOSEPH P. HOLMES, OF CASPER, WYOMING.
KEYLESS PADLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1916.
Application filed April 25, 1914. Serial No. 834,484.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH P. Holmes, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gasper, in the county of Natrona and State of \Vyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keyless Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.-
The object of my invention is to provide a keyless' padlock of the ermutation type, comprising few parts su antial in construction and all arranged in such a manner that the lock cannot be opened without the proper combination, and one which presents the parts in such a manner that they can be separated by violence only by the exertion of sufficient force to break the lock strucprovide a lock havfully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing:-Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the lock with the cover plate removed to better illustrate the -arrangement'of the operating parts. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the complete padlock. Fig. 3 is a view in transverse section through the body of the lock to illustrate the mounting of the tumbler disks. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the tumbler disks also in section.
The body 1 of the lock is cored out at 2 to form a case. A shackle 3 is pivoted by a pin 4 to the body portion and a shackle opening 5 is provided in the body 1 to receive the free end of the shackle 3. A bolt slot 6 is formed tangentially from the coredout portion 2 and communicates with the shackle opening 5.
A cover plate 7 is provided to be received againstthe open side of the body 1 and is held in place thereon bv rivets 8, 8. A lock bolt 9 is mounted to slide in the bolt-slot6 in such relation that its outer end extends through the slot into the shackle opening 5 and at the inner end this lock bolt has an arm 10. The shackle 3 on its free end has a bolt notch 11 and when the bolt 9 is moved to its one extreme position the outer end thereof is received in this notch 11.
The cored-out portion 2 of the body 1 is made circular so that the case thus provided is circular, and an opening 13 of less diameter than the cored-out portion 2 is formed through the side of the body. A similar opening 12 is provided through the cover plate 7 and when this cover plate is in place on the body of the lock the two openings are in alinement. The tumbler disks 14, 15, 16 and 17 are mounted in the coredout portions-2 and these disks have openings provided through their centers. The disks 14 and 17 which are the outer disks as mounted in the cored-out portion are made with their bodies of a suflicient radial width that faces 23 and 26 respectively are presented to be visible throughthe openings 13 and 12, and disks 15 and 16 are made of a slightly greater bodily width so that a portion of the face of the body thereof will be presented at 24 and 25 through the openings of the disks 14 and 17.
The tumbler disks 14, 15, 16 and 17 have the radial slots 18, 19, 21, and 22, respectively, formed in their outer edges. The faces 23, 24, 25 and 26 of the disks which are visible through the openings 13 and 12, are marked off in dial figures as better shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thus making it possible to retain a record of the positioning of the slots 18, 19, 21, and 22, even after the lock has been assembled by placing the tumbler disks in the cored-out portion and then securing the cover plate 7 in place. It is the intention that these slots shall all be brought into registry when it is desired to open the look and that the tumbler disks may be more readily turned in the cored-out portion the edges thereof adjacent the opening are milled or knurled to present a rough surface which mav be gripped with the fingers.
The bolt slot 6 is made stepped as at 20 at its inner end, and when the bolt is in the position shown in Fig. 1 with the arm 10 thereof engaging with the periphery of one or several of the tumbler disks this bolt is held in a position that the outer end is engaged against displacement in the notch 11 of the shackle. When it is desired to withdraw the bolt from the notch in the free end of the shackle to release this shackle, the tumbler disks are turned to a relation that the notches 18, 19, 21 and 22 are brought into registry, and then by rotating the several disks collectively to bring the registering notches beneath the arm. of the bolt and exerting a pulling free end of the shackle 3, the bolt 9 will be caused to be swung inarelation that the arm 10 thereof enters the notches. With the arm 10 of the bolt S) in the notches, the tumbler disks are movedcollectively in a turning path clockwise as the parts are illustrated in Fig. 1 and the bolt 9 as it is disengaged from the shoulder of the slot 43 is then carried to the position indicated by the dotted lines and the shackle is released. When the lock is to a ain be fastened. the free end of the shaede is closed into the shackle opening a and anti-clockwise movement is given to the tumbler disks to cause the end of the bolt 0. to be engaged in the notch 11 of the shackle, then n ma further inward.movementof the free en of the shackle the bolt is swun to a position with the inner end thereo engaging the shoulder 20 of the 'slot (3 and the arm 10 is released fromthe notches of the tumbler disks so that these disks may beindependently turned to upset the releasing combination.
When it is desired to change the combination as indicated by thedials at which the bolt may be thrown, the 17 may be interchanged in their positioning within the body 1 of the-lock, and .to give wide and varied scope to the combination of the lock as turned out at the factorythe slots 18, 19, 21, and 22 may be stamped or:
cut at any point around the periphery of the tumbler disks and thus change the combination at which the slot of each disk comes i1nt l registry with the slot of the remaining C 15 I.
\Vhile I have herein shown and described one specific form of my invention, it will be understood that slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited thereto except for such limitations as the claims may import.
