LOUIS C. APT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CUT-OUT TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1916.
Application filed October 19, 1915. Serial No. 56,666.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itv known that I, LOUIS G; Am, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Out-Out Toys, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to score, cut and fold cardboard sheets having thereon pictures of parts of animals, plants, etc., so as to form an upright, substantial toy.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the flat cardboard showing the portions of the figures before they are cut. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the upper portion scored, cut out and folded over. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the lower portion scored, cut out and foled over,
and Fig. 4 is a perspective of the various parts fitted together to form the complete to l 'ormed on the so-called upper portion is the picture of the upper body portion of an animal, bird or flower duplicated in reverse position below the scoring line, so that when this portion is folded over as directed, both front and rear give similar views. The lower portion has thereon the representation of the lower portion of the figure, certain portions being duplicated to fold over in the manner hereinafter set forth.
In the figures similar letters are used to denote similar parts. Those parts which are to be folded only are indicated by scoring lines, and those parts which are to be cut, by full lines.
The invention embodies a toy, denoting an animal, the upper body portion being formed as shown in the figures at B on cardboard A. A transverse line is shown scored at 2. Crossing this are shown two slits 1. In the lower' body portion of the figure shown in the drawings the cardboard is divided by two scoring lines 4, 4, into three horizontal sections, each of these sections being divided by scoring lines 8, 8, into three vertical sections, forming in all nine sections, 5, 5', 5", 6, 6', 6", and 7, 7 and 7", the central horizontal section 6 having a horizontalslot 11 extending beyond the vertical divisions thereof into 6' and 6". The end vertical divisions 5, 5", '7 and 7" are each provided with a vertical slot 9. The end vertical divisions 6', 6" of the central section are cut on full lines 10 to form slotted tabs. The lower portion C is then folded over on the scoring lines to form a boxbeen folded on the scoring line,
vertical divisions 5, 5", 7 and 7", forming the continuousslot 11 (Figs. 3 and 4). Thus the lower portion produces a box-like stand with a central slot 11, adapted to receive and engagethe upper portion which has forming the two slots 1 which rest in the horizontal slot 11 of the lower portion. The vertical slots 9 and 1 are formed with small indentations 3, for greater ease in adjustment.
The toy can be formed of cardboard or other flexible material. The cardboard can be lithographed or printed to represent the body of any animal, bird, or the upper portions of plants or flowers, While the lower box-like portion forms the legs or lower body portion of the animal, flower pot or stem portion of a plant. .The device can be adapted to any combination involving a lower and box-like base and an upper portion. It is contemplated to arrange these figures in series of animals to form toy menageries, collections of flowers or the like. The result is a neat and substantially correct representation of an animal which will stand upright.
It is obvious that any child can, with proper instructions, out out and score the proper portions, thus putting the figure together in the manner shown. The construction does away with paste or clamps of any kind.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A toy of flexible material, having an upper portion formed with a transverse scoring line intercepted by short slits and a lower portion formed by scoring lines into three horizontal sections, each section being divided into three vertical divisions, the central horizontal section having a horizontal slot extending beyond the vertical divisions thereof, the end vertical divisions other than the central ones, being provided with a vertical slot adjacent to the central section, and the end vertical divisions of said central section, being cut to form slotted tabs adapted to be folded down and inclosed by the other end vertical slotted divisions folded at the scoring lines, all of the slots of the lower portions meeting to form a continuous slot, the upper portion being folded on the scoring lines forming vertical slots adapted to rest in the slot of the lower portion.
2. A toy formed of a blank of flexible material, ada ted to be severed into two blanks, one lank being formed with a plurality of longitudinal slots and the second blank being formed by scoring lines into three transverse sections, each section being divided into three longitudinal divisions, the central transverse section having a transverse slot extending beyond the longitudinal divisions thereof, the end longitudinal divisions other than the central ones, being provided with a longitudinal slot adjacent to the central section, and the end longitudinal divisions of said central sections being cut to form slotted tabs adapted to be folded down and inclosed by the other end longitudinal slotted divisions folded at the scoring lines, all of the slots of this second blank meeting to form a continuous slot, the longitudinal slots of the other blank being adapted to rest in the ends ofthe slot of the second blank.
3. A toy formed of a blank of flexible material, adapted to be severed into two blanks, one blank being formed with a plurality of longitudinal slots and the second blank being formed by scoring lines into transverse sections, each section being divided into longitudinal divisions, the central transverse section having a transverse slot extending beyond the longitudinal divisions thereof, the end longitudinal divisions other than the central ones,
blank being provided with a plurality of longitudinal slots and the second blank containing a central slot surrounded by a plurality of tabs adapted to be folded in to form a box-like base, the longitudinal slots of the one blank fitting into the ends of the central slot of the base.
5. A toy formed of a blank of flexible material, severable into two blanks, one blank being provided with a plurality of longitudinal slots and the other blank containing a central slot surrounded by a plurality of slotted tabs adapted to be folded in to form a box-like base having a continuous central slot, the longitudinal slots of the one blank fitting into the ends of the central slot of the base.
