DYEING-MACI-IINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, iaic.
Application filed June 13, 1913. Serial N o. 773,550.
lof such-.devices wherein the material is lo- 'cated in a tank or vat within a mass forming and liquor supplying member which 1s substantially bowl shaped and is adapted to hold the mass in the proper shape against ,a cover having a central isolated discharge,
said mass forming` and liquor distributing member being provided with openings which, together with the discharge openings in the cover, set up direct paths of travel for the dye liquor, which are substantially equal throughout the entire mass, that is, a straight line from any point in the liquor .supply or of the bowl to the nearest point of liquor discharge is equal to every other path, this being accomplished by the `bowl shaped bottomwith the openings isolated in the center ofthe cover.
The circulation set up by the mass forming and liquor supplying means and the central isolated discharge in the cover n causes the mass, when wet, to be compacted by the flow of the dye liquor along lines coincident with the natural lines of shrinkage of the mass.
The invention may be further brieiiy summarized as consisting in the construction and` combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings'and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a dyeing apparatus showing the tank distributing member and cover in section; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the cover'; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the bowl shaped massfforming and liquor supplying member; Fig. l is a sectional view of a portion of a vat with cover and distributing member showing auxiliary Vdischarge openings in the portion of the cover between the main discharge and the periphery thereof; and Fig. 5 is a bottom plan View of the cover.
In carrying out the invention any preferred form and construction of machine may be employed so long as it possesses the necessary characteristics, but I have shown one arrangement in the drawings which is effective in operation and in such embodiment l represents a suitable tank provided with an inlet opening 2 at the bottom and preferably at the center connected by suitable piping with the outlet of a pump 3 which is vadapted to* draw liquor through a suitable pipe 4 from an opening 5 at a point near the upper edge or through an opening 6 in the bottom of the tank. During the dyeing operation, however, it is preferable to have the circulation established in such a manner that the dye liquor iows in at the bottom of the tank through the pipe 2 at the center while the discharge takes place through the 4opening 5. This `means for the circulation of dye liquor may be. of any preferred type, the present form being merely one arrangement which is well known in the art.
`which is provided with` discharge perforations 10. The cover is braced by suitable webbing 11 which is cut away at 12 above the vperforations to allow predischarge of the liquor and to cause the discharge to be substantially uniform throughout its area. Engaging the cover is a suitable ring 13 held down by clips 14k in a well known manner this feature of the casing being relatively unimportant, as any securing means for the cover will answer the purpose.
Secured to the flange 7 is the mass forming and liquor distributing member 15 which has a substantially flat area 16 corresponding to the area of the discharge in the cover. The remaining portion or the curved side in cross section is of arc shape, the are thereof having for a center the outer edge of the discharge and in cases where perforations or holes are used for the discharge the center of the outer row of openings or holes is the center of the arc described by any transverse section of the side of the mass forming and distributing member. This member is secured to the flange by means of screws or any other preferred manner, the
mainfeature being the idea of providing an isolated discharge, or in other words, a discharge having an imperforate area about the same with the mass -forming and liquor supplying member which forms and holds the mass so that equal paths of travel will lead from the supply opening in this member to the discharge. In order to prevent the batch from shifting Within the machine, I provide the distributing member l5 with an upwardly extending rod 17 so that it will project into the mass and hold it from shift ing about after it is shrunk.
In the modifications shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the cover 9 is provided with auxiliary discharge openings 18 which are fewer in number and smaller than the main discharge openings whereby there is a slight release of liquor and pressure between the main discharge and the periphery. 'Ihe mass forming and liquor distributing member is bowl shaped, that is, it is substantially semispherical, although in the drawings it is shown liattened at the bottom to correspond with the discharge. It may, however, be arranged in the form of a perfect halfsphere. The working parts of the machine, that is, the tank, cover and distributing member, may be inverted so that the lines of flow are downward and toward the center in place of upward toward the center.
Having described my invention, I claim 1- l. In a dyeing machine, a receptacle forming a dyeing chamber, a closure for said receptacle substantially flat and having a main central isolated discharge, a foraminous mass forming and liquor supplying member for forming the mass to establish substantially equal paths of travel from each point of liquor supply to its nearest point of liquor discharge, and means for circulating the dye liquor.
2. In a dyeing machine, a receptacle forming a dyeing chamber, mass conining mea-ns comprising a substantially fiat member with a main central isolated discharge, a :toraminous mass shaping and liquor supplying member for forming the mass to establish substantially equal paths of travel from each point oi' liquor supply to its nearest point or' liquor discharge, and means for circulating the dye liquor.
3. In a dyeing machine, a tank, a cover having a central discharge, and a mass forming and liquor supplying member shaping the mass and holding it in a manner to establish equal paths of travel for the dye liquor through the mass to the discharge, and means for circulating the dye liquor.
4. In a dyeing machine, a tank, a cover having a central `loraminous discharge, and a mass forming and liquor supplying member of bowl shape and of a construction such that the paths of travel of the dye liquor from all pointsv of liquor `supply to the nearest liquor discharge are substantially equal.
5. In a dyeing machine, a tank, a cover having a central foraminous discharge, and a foraminous mass forming and liquor supplying member substantially bowl shaped having a flat portion co-extensive with the dischargeand an arc-shaped side, the distance from the discharge in the cover to the edge of the `mass forming and liquor supplying member and the radius of the side of such member and the distance from the flat bottom to the discharge being all substantially equal, and means for circulating the dye liquor.
G. In a dyeing machine, a tank, a cover having a central foraminous discharge, and a oraminous mass forming and liquor supplying member of bowl shape with a flat bottom co-extensive with the discharge and an arc-shaped side, the radius of the are and 'the distance of the flat portion of the bottom being substantially equal to the distance from the outer periphery kof the discharge to the edge of the bowl-shaped mass forming and liquor supplying member.
7. In a dyeing machine, a receptacle forming a dyeing chamber, mass confining means comprising a substantially flat member with a main central isolated discharge and an auxiliary discharge, a foraminous mass shaping and liquor supplying member for forming the mass to establish substantially equal paths of travel from each point of liquor supply to its nearest main point of liquor discharge, and means for circulating the dye liquor.
