CLOTHES OHOFIELD. UNDER.
Patented Dec. 7, 1897.
FRANK B. SOHOFIELD, OF VEST, AND JOSEPH L. SCHOFIELD, OF TAYLOR,
. TEXAS.
CLOTHES-POUNDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,907, dated December *7, 1897.
Application filed October 12, 1896.
To all whom, it may nccrn:
Be it known that we, FRANK B. SOHOFIELD, residing at Vest, in the county ofMcLennan, and JOSEPH L. SOHOFIELD, residing at Taylor,
in the county of \Villiamson, State of Texas,
citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Founders; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clothes-pounders,and especially to a pounder having a peculiar construction whereby a circulation of steam and water is produced which forces the water through the clothes which are being agitated; and it consists of a conical-shaped pounder having a chamber contained therein, with valve regulated apertures leading through the walls thereof and through which steam is allowed to pass into a compartment, where as it condenses it runs down and out at the bottom of the pounder.
The invention relates, further, to a con- 0 struction of clothes-pounder having an outer tion of ters marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters bottom plan Serial No. 608,638. (No model.)
of reference indicate like parts throughout both views, in which'- Figure 1 is a central vertical view through our improved clothes-pounder. Fig. 2 is a of the pounder.
Reference drawings by letter, A designates the outer cone or shell, which is provided near its upper'end with a series of apertures a, over -.which is constructed a hood B. Vertically extended through the apex of the cone is the tubing 0, in which maybe inserted a handle. Located within the outer cone and extending about half-way to the apex thereof is the tru ncated cone D,with its upper end concaved, as seen at D. caved portion D through which the tubing 0 passes is a series of small apertures d, communicating between the space above the concaved surface and that beneath it.
E is a conical-shaped chamber, which is connected near its upper end with the under surface of the concaved partition, and within the said conical-shaped chamber is the upwardlyinclined funnel F, open at both ends. Near the apex of the conical chamber E is a series of apertures 6, opening from the space beneath the chamber E into the space formed by the truncated cone D, and these apertures are provided with valves E. The lower end of the truncated cone D is located in a plane a slight distance below the lower end of the outer cone, and the inner upwardly-inclined conical portion F is in a still higher plane.
The operation of the pounder will be readily pounder is pressed down on the clothes, the steam contained-within the chamber E will cause the valves E to close as it is forced in, and when coming in contact with the air contained therein will expand and be forced out through the narrow openings K at the bottom of the truncated cone to pass through the clothes. As it is thus forced out through the clothes a partial vacuum will be formed in the chamber E being had to the-details of the About the surface of the conunderstood and is as follows: Then the and the valves will open and allow air and steam to enter the chamber E through apertures mentioned, and thus filling the said chamber the operation is repeated and the clothes which are being laundered will by this process be thoroughly cleansed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A clothes-pounder comprising in combination with the outer conical shell, an inner truncated conical shell D, the concaved partition D apertured at its apex to receive a tube 0, and having a series of apertures d therein, the inner conical shell E the lower end of which is in the same plane with the lower end of the shell D, a series of valve-regulated apertures in said shell E, and an inner and upwardly tapering funnel F secured at its upper end to shell E and interposed between the two series of apertures, snbstantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
