Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State' `of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful "Improvements 1n Dyeing-Machines, of which `the following is a specification.
This invention 'relates -to dyeing machines.
`l\[ore[specifically*the invention relates tomachines of the character referred to com-A prising a tank provided withI a removable cover and having mounted thereon a mass shaping liquor Vsupplying member, the space between said coverand said mass shaping and liquor supplying memberl being occupied by the materialto be dyed. The cover is of the usual fiat form except that from its periphery to a suitable point there are main discharge openings, and within this point and toward `the,A center there are smaller discharge openings, or openings of less capacity, or a discharge of less capacity. The mass shaping and liquor supplying member comprises a flat annular portion and a centrally located 'dome rising from theV flat portionlin a manner such that the wall on any side and in any vertical section is in the form of an `arc having its center at a pointwhich is substantially coincident with the innermost circular rowof main discharge openings which `are providedlin the cover. f `Asa result of the above construction of-cover and the massshaping and liquor-supplying member all the main paths of travelofth'e dye liquor from the centraldome aswell as from the flat annular portion of themass "shaping and liquor supplying vmember to the main discharge openings in `the cover are substantially equalin length. The centrally locatedl dome performs' the additional function of supply` ing1liquor` to expand the annulus of the material tobe dyed, thus preventing channeling at theside of the tank.` The discharge'openingsof less capacity toward the center -of the 4cover are vmerely `for the purpose of taking care of thesmall amount of materialf which is located at this point.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a machine constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a portion of the cover; and Fig. l3 is a top plan view of the mass shaping and liquor supplying member.
In carryingw out the invention any preferred form and construction of parts may be employed so long as they possess the necessary characteristics, but I have shown one form in the drawings which is highly eective'in operation and in such embodiment 1 represents a tank having a liquor inlet opening 2 at the bottomand a shoulder 3 in the lower outer corner and suitable openings 4 for a purpose to be described.v The tank is also provided with an extension 5, which is provided with a liquor outlet opening 6. The openings 2 and 6 are connected to a suitable circulating system 7 in which there is a circulating pump 8 these parts being of any preferred construction, and since they form no part of the invention, except so far as their general characteristics arel concerned, they will not be further described.
The wall of the tank l adjacent to the extension 5 is lower, as shown at 9, so that the liquor may flow above the upper edge of the tank into the receptacle formed by the extension 5 from whence it may be discharged. The tank is provided with a suitable cover 10 having a central boss 11 which receives an eye 12 which furnishes means for handling the cover. This cover is also provided with ribs 13 and between these ribs and through the cover are main disis a mass shaping and liquor supplyingV member comprising an annular fiat portion 16 having at the center an upwardly extending dome 17, the wall on one side of the center and on any vertical plane being in the form of an arc described about a corresponding point on the circumference of the circle touching the innermost row of the main discharge openings 14. The dome and the annular fiat portion of this member are both provided with liquor supply openings 18, the supply openings in the fiat portion and up the side being of greater capacity than the supply openings 19 at the uppermost part of the dome, these openings being smaller so that a small amount of liquor passes therefrom. The tank may be provided with a steam distributing ring 20 connected to a steam pipe 21 supplied with steam from any suitable source.
Assuming that material is arranged in the chamber between the cover and the mass shaping and liquor supplying member and that the parts are in place, and further that the liquor supply system is in operation the circulation is started with the liquor flowing in through the opening 2 under the mass shaping and liquor supplying member and into the dome. The liquor travels upward in straight lines from the flat portion of the shaping and liquor supplying member through the main discharge openings of the cover. In order to prevent channeling about the periphery the liquor supplied to the dome moves outward .and upward .to the inner rows of main discharge openings in the cover in paths which are substantially equal in length to the paths from the fiat portion of the mass shaping and liquor supplying member to the cover since the smaller openings at the top and center of the dome and the openings of less capacity near the center of the cover are insufficient to satisfy the flow of the dye liquor. In this way the annulus of material is evenly dyed by reason of the fact that the liquor has a uniform resistance to its flow through the material and cannot contract from the outer wall of the tank suiiiciently to permit channeling at this point.
Reference has been made to the false bot tom and dome being a mass shaping and liquor supplying member. It is obvious that the false bottom and dome forming the mass shaping and liquor supplying member shape the mass when it is iii-st packed in the machine in a manner such that when the liquor is supplied to the mass from this member it is forced out in the manner described and in substantially the shape in which it was originally formed so that the paths of travel for the dye liquor through the mass remain substantially the same. y

In apparatus for dyeing permeable material by forcing dye carrying liquor through the same, a receptacle forming a chamber for receiving the material to be dyed, a cover for said receptacle having a main discharge toward the periphery, and an auxiliary discharge toward the center of less capacity than the main discharge, and material shaping and liquor supplying means for shaping the mass of material into annular form and applying liquor thereto, all points ofliquor supply in said material shaping and liquor supplying means being arranged in a manner such that the distance between each point of liquor supply and the nearest pointof the main liquor discharge are approximately equal.
2. In apparatus for dyeing permeable material by forcing dye carrying liquor through the same, a receptacle forming a chamber for receiving the material to be dyed, a cover for said receptacle having a main discharge toward the periphery with a liquor discharge passage resistance portion toward the center, and material shaping and liquor supplyingmeans comprising a flat annular member having a central projection extending to the cover, said projection having concave sides, the radius of the arc of the curved side of the projection and the distance from the cover to the annular flat portion being substantiallyv equal.
3. In apparatus for dyeing permeable material by `forcing dye liquor through the same, a receptacle forming a chamber for receiving the material to be dyed, a cover for said receptacle having a main discharge near the periphery and an auxiliary discharge near the center of less capacity than the main discharge, material shaping and liquor supplying means `for shaping the mass of material into annular form and supplying liquor thereto, whereby the liquor will cause the material to be compacted uniformly against the side wall of the receptacle, against the main discharge and against the auxiliary discharge with substantially equal paths of travel for the dye liquor through the mass to the main discharge, and means for circulating the dye liquor.
4. In apparatus for dyeing permeable material by forcing dye liquor through the same, a receptacle forming `a chamber for receiving the material to be dyed, a cover for said receptacle having a main discharge toward the periphery and an auxiliary discharge toward the center of less capacity than the main discharge, a material shaping and liquor supplying member within said receptacle comprising an annular fiat portion and a dome having any vertical plane in its side describing an arc about a corresponding point in the innermost periphery of the main discharge, whereby the liquor will cause the material to be compacted against the side of the receptacle, and
against the main and auxiliary discharges with substantially equal paths of travel for the liquor through the mass to the main discharge, and means for circulating the dye liquor.
5. A material shaping and liquor supplying member for a dyeing machine having an annular base and a central dome rising therefrom in substantially trunco conical shape and having concave sides.
