IMPROVEMENT IN TABLE-SLIDES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,123, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORTIFIER GRIFFIN, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ExtensionTable y Slides; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', ref erence being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a slide for eXtension tables, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 2 a transverse vertical section of my exten sion-table slide. Fig. 3 shows two of the slidepieces detached and turned away from each other.4
A A represent the usual table-slides, provided with longitudinal T-shaped grooves. At one end of each of said grooves is inserted awooden rest or guide, B, projecting beyond the surface ofthe slide to which it is attached and into the groove on the adjoining slide. rIhese rests or guides B B maybe made solid in one piece with the slide, or separate and attached to the slide, as may be desired. On each rest or guide B is secured a square disk or plate, C, which is beveled at the edges for the purpose of cutting its way in case of any roughness which may be left by the saw in cutting the groove, thereby securing aperfect and sure movement of the slides. At the end of each slide-piece A is a staple, D, crossing the slot or groove in the same. These staples are set flush with the face of the slides, a proper distance from the ends to prevent breaking or tearing out, for the purpose of forming a stop to prevent the slides from pulling apart when properly adjusted for use.
I do not wish to be imderstood as broadly claiming a metal disk attached to the sides of a table-slide, as I am aware that such is not new when placed square on the guides. It will be seen that I attach the disks to the guides in a diagonal manner, and that the two corners of the disks which act in the groove are slightlyloeveled and form knives 'to cut their way through inequalities that may exist in the sides of the groove and allow the slides to move freely should tlfe grooves become swollen from the effects of the weather.
Having thus fully described my inventlon, wh at I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The square metallic disks C beveled on two of the corners and diagonally secured to the guides B B of the slides A A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of June7 1871.
MORTIMER GRIFFIN.
Vitnesses:
THos. J. GRIFFIN, J AMES DECKER.
