HOLDER FOR EMERY-CLOTH AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 2, 1916..
Application filed. June 8, 1915. Serial No. 32,810.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD EDENBOROUGI-I, engineer, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 89 Prince of Wales Mansions, Battersea Park, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Emery-Cloth and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders or means for mounting and holding emery cloth or the like on files or other supports; and has consisting of readily attachable or detachable devices for the aforesaid purposes of simple and economical character and specially designed and adapted for mounting and holding emery cloth on any ordinary file (without requiring any alteration or modification of the latter) or the said devices may be employed for mounting and holding emery cloth or the like on any other body or backing (i. 6. other than a file) adapted to serve as a support of said emery cloth or the like while in use which support (or file) may be of any desired or suitable width and length or shape.
The present invention comprises (1) a special gripping device or means (hereinafter referred to as the grip) adapted (0;) to be readily attached to and detached from the tang or shaft or handle end of any ordinary file or the like or any other suitable body or backing adapted to serve as a support (all of which I will hereinafter refer to as the file) for the emery cloth or the like and (72) to have one end of the said emery cloth or the like attached thereto and detached therefrom and (2) an attachment plate or gripping device (which I will here inafter refer to as the emery cloth attaching plate) adapted (a) to have attached thereto the other end of the strip of emery cloth or the like and after the latter has been stretched taut over the outer end of the file adapted (b) to be fitted onto and device or in conjunction with the two aforesaid devices as hereinafter explained.
For the sake of example 1 will now describe with reference to the accompanying drawings my invention as carried into prac tice for attaching a piece (strip or sheet) of emery cloth, sand or glass paper or the like for example a leather strip provided with abrading material for burnishing (all of which I will hereinafter refer to as emery cloth) over one or both faces of an ordinary for its object to provide holders or means Referring to the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the grip adapted to be attached to and detached from the ordinary tang of a file. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the aforesaid clip or slide adapted to fit or slide over the outer end of the file and emery cloth thereon. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the file having a strip of emery cloth secured over one face thereof by the aforesaid grip Fig. 1 and slide Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of a similar grip to Fig. 1slightly modified. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the emery cloth attaching plate. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of a file showing method of attaching a strip of emery cloth over both faces of said file by means of the aforesaid devices illustrated in Figs. 4: and 5.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1-3,
the grip (Fig. 1) comprises a fiat plate or portion A adapted to extend from the tang end of the file X for a short distance over the face of the file X which portion A is provided with means for readily attaching thereto (and detaching therefrom) one end of the strip of emery cloth Wwhich it is desired to mount on the file X and for this purpose this portion A of the grip is provided with two (or more) parallel slots A extending across the plate A through which slots one end of the emery cloth is passed up and down as shown in Fig. 3 to thereby attach (in this well-known manner) one end of the emery cloth to this portion A of the grip. At right angles to this portion A of the grip same is provided with two downwardly extending lugs or jaws B with a central opening left clear between same (see Fig. 1) this opening being advantageously narrower at the lower end of said jaws which latter toward their over the faceof the file Xi lower end 'and'on the inner edge thereof are provided with a shoulder 13 about midway the length thereof; the distance apart between the lower ends of said jaws B being just suificient to enable same to be passed on to the tang Y of the file X (either with or without removing the handle Z) 6. said jaws B may be passed sid-ewise over the tang Y of the file X and bythen giving the tang Y or the grip (Fig. 1) a quarter turn the wider part of the tang Y can then slide up through the wider part of theopening between said downwardly extending lugs or jaws B and thus enable the gripl to be brought up against, or close to, the body of the file or shoulderof the inner end of the file X as shown in Figs. 3 and 6 in which position said grip is now locked to the file; while the strip of emery cloth W is drawn taut over the face of the file X and the end folded over the top ofv the file and secured in this taut position by simply fitting or sliding thereover a strong spring clip or slide (of inverted Usshape) C "(see Figs. 2 and 3) whereby the strip of emery cloth W is maintained fixedly in position Referring nowmore particularly to Figs. 4 and 6, to mount the emery clothover both sides or faces of the file Xone end of the strip of emery cloth W of about double the length of the file X) has one end thereof .attached to the portion A 'of the fgri shown in ,Fig. 4 which is. shown provided with three transverse slotsfAt therein for this purpose) and, the lugs or jaws-Bot this grip? are passedon to the narrow part ofthe tang Y- and'locked or secured to the file as in Fig. 3 twhile the 'othe'r end ,Ofthe strip of emery cloth W (which is passed around the top of thefileso. as-to extend over. both faces thereof) is attached to the emery cloth attaching plate -D (see Figs. 5 and .6) by threading, same sup and down through the transverse slots D 7 provided for this purpose in said plateD which latter is alsoprovided with two short. transverse slots D and twocircularholes D the said short transverseslots D being of such size, and in alinement .Or so positioned, as to be adapted to slide or fit onto the outer ends of the jaws or lugs B of the grip Fig. 4:, The circular holes D which are. provided in that end of the plate I) which extends. toward the handle of the file are arranged and adapted to permit the ends of. the double lever E (which for examplemay consistof a U-shaped stout wirelto be passed through said holes D? and then act as ,a,.lever, as
, shown in Fig.5, to thereby vforciblygdraw taut the strip of emery cloth, and when sufficiently taut, .the slots 1)? ili'the attaching plate D canthen beslippedontofso as to en ag W h-th j w Bet.fi efs btl 4 that thereby said devices (Figs. iana 5) It will be obvious that my present invention may be employed in conjunction with any other suitable body or backing in place width or length or shape with a tang or shaft or handle of any suitable shape as desired, the aforesaid gripping device or the jaws thereof being modified or shaped accordingly vto suit the size and shape of said tang, shaft or handle with which same is to fit over and engage. I
As a modification of the aforesaid grip; whenthe handle of the file or other holder can be readily removed and replaced, then that part of the grip which fits on or over the tang or equivalent may consist of a plate having a hole therein adapted to slip on over theend of the said tang or equivalent.
