Description

C. ASHWELL.
SAFETY RAZOR.

SAFETY-RAZOR.
menace.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES AsHWELL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, re-
' siding at Fawsley Park, Kearsney, in the Province of Natal, Union of South Africa, have invented certain new and'useful Tm- :provements in Safety-Razors, of whichthe following is a specification.
. This invention is for a'new'or improved form of safety razor in which a blade usually two edged, of sheet steel, is fixed in a handle having guards on both sides of the plate so that it acts like a plane, and lanes the hair away, the handle being tubu ar in whole or in part, and part of it formed as a screw or tightening device so as to tighten the two guard plates against each other on to through the center line, Fig. 3 a plan view of the lower guard, and Fig. 4 a plan view of the razor blade.
In these 1 is a thin steel blade sharpened on both sides 2, 2.
downward at an angle of 25- degrees, and screwed at the end at 8. 7 is a second cover.
3 is a hiatus cut out of this blade to fit the projection 4 of the stem 5 as hereafter described. This'projection 4 can be of any desirable form, its objeot'being to hold the two cover plates'hereafter described.
6 isa cover plate having projectiops 4 as already described and machined S as to be somewhat concaveion the underneath side. l[t--has a stem 5, projecting from the center plate on the opposite sides of the plate. It
also is slightly curved to' the same curvature .as the lower side of plate 6. These give a strain on the blade, and tlllIlS.h0ld the latter rigid. This cover plate is shaped so as to allow all the projections 4, and stemv 5a) pass into or through its It has brazed to it a tubularproject on 9' and it is suitably milled as shown in Fig. 1 so as to become a firm handle.
10 is a tubular nut screwed i to" fit the screw 8. This. nut isalso milled,* and I with the'part 9 formsthe handle.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 4M 6..
Application filed January 20, 1916. Serial No. 73,204.
The plate 7 has preferably a series .of slots at both edges which will give way slightly when the whole is pressed up, and will act also as a guard for the plate. The best angle at which the stems 5 and 9 should project from the head has been found by experiment to be degrees, but this may be [slightly altered without much injuring the utility of the invention.
In assembling the parts together, the part 6 is preferably placed with' its stem 5 upright. The blade is now fitted on theparts 4 entering the orifice 3 in the blade. -The cover plate 7 and the stem 9 previously brazed together (they could be made in one piece. with dificulty) are next applied. The part 10 is then screwed on to the screw 8 .until it comes tight up against the stem 5. The whole is 'now tightly fixed together. To use the razor, the operator simply grasps the stem 8, 9, and shaves with either of the two sides 2, the parts 6 and 7 acting as guards to prevent the blade 2 cutting the skin.
I cla1m as my 1nvent1on-' V As an improved artlcle of manufacture,
a safety razor comprising a lower coverplate of oblong form having a depending central hollow handle, downwardly inclined guard teeth. at its two longer edges, said plate formed in its upper face with a central depression and set, in the direction of its length, diagonally to said hollow handle an oblong duplex blade having acentral opening, an upperoblong cover plate parallel with the'lower plate and having a central projection extending through theblade aperture into the said central depression, and a central stem extending down through the. hollow handle and provided with a threaded lower end, and a handle extension having a threaded socket engaging said threaded lower end, the adjacent faces of the cover plates being curved to place the'blade under strain, whereby the razor may be used with a sidewise shearing movement in lieu of a downward pull.
