SAMUEL H. FRANK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FLY-KILLING DEVICE.
Application filed June 17, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. FRANK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fly-Killing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fly killing devices, and has for its object the production of a device of this character which will be of durable and economical construction and efiicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fly killing device embodying the invention, and Fig. 2 is a central section of the device.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a flap consisting of two superimposed layers 1 of wire mesh.
Inclosing the peripheral portions of the members 1 is an edging 2 of velvet, oil cloth, corduroy or other suitable material which is secured thereto by stitching 3.
Coiiperating with the flap is an elongated handle 4, one end of which is bifurcated in order to embrace one edge of the flap, the parts being rigidly connected by means of nails 5.
Arranged at the secured edge of the flap, at opposite sides of the wire mesh members 1, are flexible sheets 6 of pressed fiber which are secured in position by the stitching 3, the outer edges of said sheets being positioned under the edging 2. The inner edges of the sheets 6 project beyond the inner terminal of the handle 4; so that when the device is in use, the flap will be reinforced at the transverse line of bending of the same which is, of course, just beyond the inner terminal of the handle. The sheets being formed of flexible material, the same will bend with the wire mesh members 1 of the flap, as clearly shown in dotted lines in Fig 2, thereby relieving the wire mesh at the line of bending by preventing too sharp bending of the same. The life of the device Gopies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 34,668.
is thus materially extended, it being known that with devices of this character, the Wire mesh is the first to give out because of too sharp bending at the end thereof attached to the handle.
In order to reinforce the flap at the point of engagement therewith of the nails 5, a metallic plate 7 is inserted under one of the sheets 6 through which said nails pass, as clearly shown in the drawing.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. ll, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a fly killing device, a flap comprising a wire mesh body; an edging on said body secured thereto by stitching; a reinforcing sheet of flexible material arranged upon said body at one end thereof extending to the lateral edges of said body and secured thereto by said stitching; and a handle having one end secured to said body at said reinforcing sheet, said end terminating a short distance from the corresponding inner edge of said reinforcing sheet, substantially as described.
2. In a fly killing device, a flap comprising a wire mesh body; an edging on said body secured thereto by stitching; a reinforcing sheet of flexible pressed fiber arranged upon each side of said body at one end thereof extending to the lateral edges of said body and secured thereto by said stitching; and a handle having one end secured to said body at said reinforcing sheets, said end terminating a short distance from the corresponding inner edges of said reinforcing sheets, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL H. FRANK.
