To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD WOJAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Floral Park, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a monkey wrench which is provided with a removable attachment by means of which. it may also be utilized as a pipe wrench. In this way, one and the same tool may be employed for turning nuts or bolts, as well as for turning pipes, so that the operator is relieved from the necessity of carrying separate tools for performing both classes of work.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a wrench embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a rear view thereof, and Fig. 3 a. perspective view of the pipe-jaw detached.
The wrench comprises essentially a shank 1, a handle 2, a fixed jaw 3, and a movable jaw 4, operated by screw spindle 5, all as usual. The heel of jaw 3 is provided with a groove 6, within which is seated a bolt or pivot 7, by means of which an additional pipe-engaging jaw 8 is adapted to be removably coupled to the wrench. This jaw is formed of a curved and serrated gripping body and an integral shank 9 which is forked to straddle jaw 3. Openings 10 formed in the lower portion of shank 9 are adapted for the reception of bolt 7 which is held thereto by a nut 10, so that when the bolt becomes worn it may be removed and replaced.
When the device is to be used as a monkey wrench, jaw 8 is removed and the wrench is employed in the ordinary manner for operating on nuts, bolts or similar angular articles.
lVhen the device is to be used as a pipe wrench, bolt 7 is fitted into groove 6, and aw 4 is screwed up to such an extent that the bolt is securely clamped between the heels of jaws 3 and 4. In this position the pipe jaw 8, will project over the top of jaw 3, and the pipe 11 to be operated upon may be clamped between the inner serrated face of jaw 8, and the upper beveled face 12 of jaw 3. With this arrangement, the jaw will by tilting on bolt 7, automatically adjust itself to any pipe, the diameter of which is within the range of the jaw.
It will be seen that the tool constructed as described serves the dual function of a nut wrench and of a pipe wrench and that when used for either one purpose its operation will'not be in any way impeded, by those elements that come into play when used for the other purpose.
I claim:
1. A wrench comprising a fixed jaw having a heel, a movable jaw having a heel, one of said heels being provided with a groove, an additional jaw adapted to be projected over the fixed jaw, and a pin on said additional jaw which is adapted to be seated within the groove and to be clamped between the heels of the fixed and movable aws. A wrench comprising a fixed jaw having a grooved heel, a movable jaw, an additional curved and serrated jaw, said additional jaw having a forked shank adapted to straddle the fixed jaw, and a pivot engaging said shank and removably seated within said grooved heel.
