Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS K. ELDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Dancing Figures, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a figure which is so constructed and mounted that when placed in a position where there is a wind, breeze or movement of the air, said figure and its several parts will go through various motions conforming to dancing.

The objects of my invention are, first, to provide a device of this class which is simple and economical of construction and durable, second, to provide a device of this class which may be used for various purposes, for instance; for a toy, for placing on the front of an automobile for attracting attention and for advertising purposes, etc.

With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangementof parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my device complete showing by dotted lines various motions of the figure and parts and Fig. 2, is a top or plan view thereof showing by the dotted circle its movement on the vertical axis.

Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

The arm, 1, arm, 2, body, 3, leg, 4, leg, 5, support, 6 and vertical shaft, 7, constitute the principal parts of my device.

It will be here noted that different forms and variations in shape may be used within the scope of my invention. The particular illustration in this case showing a human form.

The body, 3, is of the ordinary human form and is preferably made of pressed metal and it is provided on opposite sides with the arms, 1 and 2, which are pivotally mounted through the body and secured together on said pivot so that the arms 1 and 2, extend in opposite directions to each other on the opposite sides of the body as shown in the drawing. To the arms, 1 and 2, at the r ends are secured blades 1 and 2, which are set on an angle and in opposite d rections to each other so that they are at right angles to each other and form vanes for revolving the arms on the pivot, 3 when suflicient pressure is brought to bear on them by the wind.

The body, 3, is rigidly mounted upon the leg, 4, which supports said body and to this leg, fl, is secured the vertical shaft, 7, which is plvotally mounted in the support, 6, so that the body is mounted on a vertical axis so that it will revolve on the support 6. The leg, 5, is pivotally mounted on the body, 3, so that it moves revolubly to the body in such a manner that if the body revolves rapidly upon its vertical axis, the leg, 5, will be thrown upwardly as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, of the drawing, by reason of the centrifugal force.

It is obvious that with this construction there is provided a device that, if placed in the wind or a breeze or placed on the front of a traveling device so that it passes through the air rapidly the arms will revolve and the vanes on the arms being in certain positions will cause the body to revolve on the vertical axis which will cause a stoppage of the arm movements at times by reason of the revolution of the body on the vertical axis and cause the arms to revolve in the opposite direction, that upon rapid movement of the body on the vertical axis, the leg, 5, will be thrown upwardly as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, of the drawing placing the figure in the attitude of a dancing figure the arms revolving at the same time or turning in one direction then stopping and turning in the opposite direction. That the device is simple and economical of construction and will attract attention and cause considerable amusement in operation.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is:

1. ln a device of the class described, the combination of a body portion, a vertical shaft upon which said body portion is revolubly mounted, a leg pivotally mounted on said body portion and arms revolubly mounted on a horizontal axis on said body extending in opposite direction to each other and means onthe extended ends of said arms for revolving said arms when exposed to wind or air in motion.

2. In a device of the class described the combination of a figure with one of its leg members rigidly secured thereto, another pivotally secured thereto mounted on a vertical axis by means of said rigid leg memher, arms pivotally mounted on said figure on a horizontal axis and means secured to the ends of said arms whereby said body will revolve on its vertical axis, the arms revolving on their horizontal axis simultaneously therewith when exposed to the wind or air in motion.
