To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN A. PAUL, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Milking-Stools and Pail-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in combined milking-stools and pail-holders, and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide a stool flexibly adjustable longitudinally, and second, to combine therewith an adjustable pail-holder mounted to swing laterally. These objects I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device, with parts broken away, and indicating by broken lines the positions of its parts when adjustably moved forwardly longitudinally. Fig. 2 is a top plan of said device, with the broken lines denoting the position of the pail-holder when swung laterally. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, and Fig. 1 is a front elevation of said device.

Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.

The stool part of my device comprises a bar 1 bent medially to form two parallel members, spaced apart, with the medially bent part 2 formed into a cylindrical hingebody with a part cut away to seat a contained hinge-part 1 about an inclosed pintle 3. The hinge-part 1 is formed by bending cylindrically one extremity of another bar 5, the latter then being formed into a pail-receiving ring 6, with its other extremity 7 bent to extend along the part 5. The parts 5 and 7 have coincident bolt-holes to receive a bolt 8, the latter having a wing-nut mounted thereon, whereby the ring may be secured adj ustably to fit pails of different diameters. The numerals 10 and 12 denote like pairs of legs formed by medially bending like bars. The upper parts thereof are in contact, the lower parts bent divergently outward to form supports for the frame-bars 1 of the stool, and secured between the bars 1 at rear and front by means of rivets 11 and 13 respectively. The rivets 11 and 13 are of the socalled fast-audloose type, permitting said legs to be swung longitudinally of said bars 1. A bar 16 is located longitudinally below sald bars 1, having its forward end pivotally mounted on a cross-rod 1 1 between the upper parts of the forward legs 12. A similar cross-rod 15 extends between the rear legs 10, somewhat lower down, and the rear under edge of the bar 16 is notched at 17 to be seated detachably upon said rod 15. A seat-plate 22 has a fixed depending hangerrod or bolt 18 extending downwardly between the bars 1 of the stool-frame with its lower end threaded to receive a nut 19.

The numeral 21 denotes depending side flanges on the lower face of the seat 22 which fit over the upper outer angles of the bars 1, while a channel-bar or plate 20 is orificed to pass the bolt 18, and is seated about the lower longitudinal edges of said bars 1, the parts 20 and 21 thus serving as guides and securing-means for said seat, when the latter is shifted longitudinally.

As indicated by the dotted lines in said Fig. 1, a person upon the seat 22, may shift the frame-bars 1 either forwardly or rearwardly longitudinally by rocking the legs 10 and 12, in order to follow the movements of the animal. The forward and back movements of the frame are limited by the divergent parts of the legs engaging the under edges of the frame-bars 1, and the pairs of legs are prevented from spreading apart by the pivotally connected bar 16 which rocks with the legs. The ring 6 swings laterally, which, in case the animal strikes the pail while moving about, allows the pail to recede without spilling of its contents, or injury thereto. Since the parts of the device are pivotally connected, and the bar 16 detachable from the rear legs 10, it may be collapsed together and stowed away conveniently in a small space.

Various minor changes may be effected in the dimensions, arrangement and forms of the parts of my device, without however, departing from the principles or the scope of the protection of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A device of the character described, comprising a frame, legs therefor pivotally connected to the forward and rear ends thereof for longitudinal rocking movements while in use and adapted to engage the frame to limit the said movements in either direction, a link pivotally connected between said legs, and a pail-support mounted on one end of said frame.

A device of the character described, comprising a frame, legs therefor pivotally connected to the forward and rear ends thereoffor limited longitudinal rocking movements, linking-means between said legs, and a pail-holder mounted on one end of said frame to swing laterally.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a frame, legs therefor pivotally connected to opposite ends of said frame for limited longitudinal movements relative thereto, a connecting-bar having one end pivoted to legs at one end of said frame and having its other end detachably pivotally connected to the legs at the opposite side of said frame to permit the legs to swing together in the same direction, and a pailholding" devlce mounted on one end of said frame.

4. A device of the character described,

. comprising a frame, legs therefor pivotally connected to opposite ends of said frame, connecting-means between the said oppositely-lo'cated legs, and pail-receiving means hinged to one end of said frameto swing laterally,and adjustable to receive receptacles of varying dimensions.

5. A device of the. character described, comprising a frame, a seat-body adjustable longitudinally along said frame, legs 'for said frame connected thereto to permit limited longitudinal swinging of the frame, and a pail-holding device bracketed on one end of said frame.

6. A device of the character described, comprising a frame, a seat-body mounted on said frame and adjustable therealong, means for securing said seat in an adjusted position, and a pail-receiving means bracketed on the frame to swing laterally.

7. A device of the character described, comprising a frame formed of connected spaced parallel bars, a seat mounted upon said bars and adjustable longitudinally therealong, said seat having :1 depending rod seated between said frame-bars, guides mounted 011 said rod and seated movably upon said bars, movably-connected supports for said frame pix'oted thereto to rock longitudinally together, and adjustable pail-receiving means bracketed to one end of said frame to swing laterally only.

8. A device of the character described, comprising a frame, legs at opposite ends thereof pivotally connected thereto to permit limited longitudinal movements forward or back of said frame, and a linkingconnection between legs to permit the legs to swing together in the same direction forward or back.
