Description

PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL W. POPE, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLEVISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,050, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. POPE, of Louisville, in the county of J eiferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Olevis 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention has for its object the production of a cheap and simple clevis, by means of which a large number of adjustments of the lines of draft may be made; and consists in certain details of construction, which will be fully described hereinafter. A
In the drawing, Figures l and 4 represent plan views of my improved clevis, and Figs. 2 and 3 side elevations of the sa-me.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents the front end of a plow-beam. B B represent side plates, constructed of suitable pieces of metal having their rear ends curved, as shown, and provided with orifices b b b, and their front ends bent slightly outward, and provided with the large orifices b. These side plates are connected to the beam by suitable bolts. O represents a transverse connecting-piece, formed of a suitable metallic rod bent into corrugated form, as shown, the ends of which lrest in the orifices b. Its length, it will be observed, is greater than the width of space between the ends of the side plates, and consequently one of its ends projects beyond one of the side plates, as shown. D represents a double-hooked loop for connecting the draft devices to the clevis. The hooks of this loop rest, when in place, in the depressions c of the connecting-piece O. From the peculiar construction of the latter it will be observed that the hooks of the loop may rest in two positions, either centrallybetween the side plates, as shown in Fig. 4, or with one hook upon each side of the side plate adjacent to the projecting end of the connecting-piece C, as shown in Fig. l. By this means a central draft may be obtained, or a side draft. By turning the connecting-iron over, its position in the side plates will be chan ged-that is, it will be moved the width of one of the depressions to one side, so that if the connecting was so extended previous to the change as to permit a right-hand draft, if desired, it would be possible to obtain a left-hand draft after the change. By using a single hook intermediate changes may be made.
By the construction shown seven lateral adjustments of the draft may be made, three adjustments being possible with the double hook, and four with'the single hook.
The vertical adjustments of the clevis are made by causing the side plates to swing up or down upon the center bolt, they being secured in the desired position by means of the rear bolt, which passes through the orifices b, as shown. If further vertical adjustment is desired it can be obtained by taking off the side plates and by placing them inverted upon the opposite sides of the beam, as shown in Fig. 3. If desired, also, vertical adjustment can be obtained by hooking the loop over or under the connecting-rod.
The device described is exceedingly simple in its construction, and renders it possible to obtain a large number of adjustments of the lines of draft.- If desired, also, a one-horse clevis may be made with a less number of corrugations, as indicated at x.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to .secure by Letters Patent, is-
The clevis-rod O, bent substantially as described, in combination with the side plates B, or their equivalents, as set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 27th day of May, 1871.
SAMUEL W. POPE.
