Description
PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS JENNrNGs MooAEvER, or OREGON CITY, OREGON.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,038, dated August 15, 187i.
T0 all uhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAs J ENNiNGs MOGAR- VER, of Oregon City, Clackamas county and State ot' Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Mode of WVindow-Fastenings5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact de scription oi' the same.
My invention consists mainly of a pawl or catch provided with a bar which works in a slotted guide-plate andis encircled by a spiral spring, the pawl being so placed as to hold the sash (either the upper or lower one) in any desired position, and to securely fasten the same when closed.
To enable others to make use of my invention, l will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The pawl or catch, as shown at a in the diagram, is fastened to a small plate, j', with a rivet or screw. The plate fis fastened to the sash or other thing having an up-and-down movement, the ratchet b being fastened to the frame, casing, or guide-strip ofthe window, the pawl or catch and ratchet being opposite each other.
For example, I will explain the workings of the lower or bottom sash: WVhen the sash is down the pawl or catch a drops under a shoulder at the bottom of ratchet b, making itimpossible for the sash to be raised until the pawl or catch is rst withdrawn, which is easily done by a gentle upward pressure with the finger against the nib d on the top of the pawl or catch. While the pawl or catch is in that position the window may be raised to the desired height, when, on removing` the linger, the pawl or catch will immediately drop forward and catch on one of the ratchets, as shown at b, in which position the window will remain until the pawl or catch a is again raised by the iinger. The top sash works the same as the lower one, with the exception that, when closed, the pawl or catch catches on the, top of ratchet a-t c, which prevents that sash from being moved until the pawl or catch is again raised with the ringer. There is a spring, e, encircling a bar, i, which is attached to the back of the pawl or catch a, which is intended to quicken the action ofthe pawl or catch, and for no other purpose. This bar works in the slotted guide or iiange j'.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The sash-fastener herein described, consisting of the plate j', pawl or catch a pivoted thereonl and provided with nib d, a spring, c, encircling an arm or bar, t, working in a slotted guide-plate, c, and ratchet-bar b, all constructed and arranged in the manner specified.
THOMAS J ENNINGS MCCARVER.
