To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES K. OLBnRc, a subject of the King of Norway, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Casings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to door casings and my object is to provide improvements in the construction thereof whereby the same may be manufactured, assembled, transported and erected more cheaply, efliciently and quickly.
My invention relates particularly to an improved anchor for securing the door-buck or casing to a wall, and the method of secur ing the anchor to the buck, to means for securing trim members to the door-buck and to improved members carried by the buck, to which the wall within the buck may be faced, while the plaster thereon is faced to the outside faces of the side flanges of the buck.
It is advantageous to have the anchors and other parts of the construction secured to the buck members before transportation to the place at which the casing is to be erected. Accordingly my construction comprises anchors which are loosely secured to the side flanges of the buck by bolts, when manufactured, the anchors being adapted to loosely hang from these bolts entirely within the side flanges of the buck-member, to facilitate packing and shipping the same.
When the buck is erected and the adjacent wall is being built, the anchors are swung into their proper horizontal positions, and the nuts tightened on the bolts by which the anchors are hung. In my preferred construction clips or securing straps are fas tened on the outside faces of the side flanges of the buck by the same bolts which secure the anchors. WVhen the structure is packed and shipped, these clips hang vertically from the bolts parallel to the side flanges of the buck member, and when the structure is erected, the clips are swung into horizontal position, extending rearwardly from the side flanges of the buck member, in which position they are secured by tightening the nuts on the bolts.

of the clips referred to, the flanges of the trim members having openings or slots in the edges thereof through which the spaced portions of the clips pass when the trim members are put in place, a trim member being pressed against the side flange of the buck with the openings in the trim member in alinement with the securing portions of the clips, after which the trim members are dropped down so that the openings in the trim member move out of alinement with the clips, the trim member being frictionally held between the clips and the side of the buck member. The members which may be used to aid in facing the wall as referred to above, preferably take the form of angular metal bars supported by the same bolts as the anchors and clips.
In order that a clearer understanding of my invention may be had, attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and illustrating certain embodiments of my' invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a horizontal section through a vertical buck member, showing an anchor and trim members assembled in operative positions thereon, Fig. 2 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, showing an anchor and a clip in their operative horizontal positions and a second anchor and clip in the positions assumed for packing and shipping, Fig. 3 represents a vertical section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional detail taken on line 44 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, the door-buck or frame member illustrated comprises a cl1annelshaped steel member having a Web 1 and side flanges 2. The entire door-buck may be formed of similar vertical members and cross members secured together and preferably adapted to be thus secured on the ground before the erection of the buck, for example in the manner disclosed in the application of Olberg and Walker, Serial No. 851,256, filed July 16, 1914, entitled Door bucks. A door 3 is illustrated as positioned within the offset portion 1 of the web of the buck member. If desired. a jamb member may be secured to thcweb or face 1 of the buck, or the face 1 of the buck may be n'opcrly finished to serve as a jamb member.
The anchor 4 is preferably of T-shape,
with forward portions 5 extending at right angles to t e body of the anchor which is adapted to be positioned between adjacent horizontal courses of the wall erected within the side flanges of the buck member. The angular portions 5 of each anchor are provided with flanges 6 which preferably extend downward at right angles to the body of the anchor, referring to the operative horizontal position of the latter illustrated in Fig. 1. Bolts 7 pass through the side flanges 2 of the buck member and the flanges 6 of the anchor, nuts 8 being mounted on the bolts on the outer side of the buck member. The clips 9,
.9 are also mounted on bolts 7 on the outer sides of the side flanges 2 of the buck member. The angular bars 10, when the latter are used, are also preferably mounted on the same bolts 7. When the buck is erected and the parts operatively positioned, the nuts 8 are tightened and the secured in the horizontal rearwardly extending positions shown in Fig. 1. \Vhen the structure is mounted for packing and shipping, however, nuts 8 are loose on bolts 7, the threads at the outer ends of bolts 7 preferably being bruised to prevent the removal of the nuts. When so mounted. the anchors 4 hang from bolts 7 in the position shown at 4 in Fig. 2. at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 1. The anchors l are then entirely within the side flanges of the buck member. permitting the construction to be packed in a small space. The same is also true of the clips or straps 9. which hang on the outer sides of side flanges i of the buck member, when the structure is prepared for packing, as indicated at 9 in Fig. 2, no portion of the clips then extending beyond the rear edges of the side flanges of the buck member, the clips and anchors being protected against injury in Shipping by the side flanges of the buck member.
It is to be noted that the angle bars 10 mounted on bolts 7 have inwardly extending portions 10 and forwardly extending flanges 10 The wall 11 of terra cotta or other construction, built within the buck member, may be faced to the inner surfaces of the for ward extensions 10 of members 10. the plaster 12 being faced to the outer surfaces of side flanges 2 of the buck member. The proportions of members 10 a re so chosen that the forward portions 5 of anchors 4 cigar the ollset portions ll) of members 10, the latter not interfering with the anchors when the latter are swung into either their vertical or horizontal positions. The flanges 10 may be omitted if desired. and the wall faced to the inner edges of flanges it).
The trim numbers 13 are formed with inwardly directed inner flanges l-l which are adapted to contact the uter surfaces of side flanges 2 ol' the. hurl; member and the plaster 12 respectively. tlips i are provided with anchor 4 and clips 9- end portions 15, and flanges 14 of the trim members are provided with slots 16 formed at intervals in their inner edges as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4;. When a trim member is to be mounted in position, it is pressed against the outer surface of a buck flange 2 and the adjacent plaster 12, with slots 16 in the flanges 14 of the trim member in alinement with the end portions 15 of theclips 9, it being understood that as many clips 9 are mounted along the length of the side flanges '2 of the buck member as is deemed desirable. The portions 15 of clips 9 pass through openings 1G in the trim member when the latter is pressed against the side of the buck member and the trim member is then allowed to drop by gravity into the position in which it is to be held, the openings 16 in the flanges of the trim member dropping out of alinement with portions 15 of the clips. The trim members are preferably held in their adjust ed positions by frictional means, the flanges 14 of the trim members being wedged between the clip portions 15 and the buck and wall respectively. To attain this end, the portions 15 of the clips 9 may be curved in a vertical plane, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the trim members will be wedged between the clips and the adjacent stationary surfaces. If it is desired to remove the trim members, the same may be raised until slots 16 are in alinement with clip portions 15, when the trim member may be moved outwardly and removed.
It is obvious that by the above described construction, I do away with the necessity for welding or otherwise permanently securing together the different parts of the construction, while at the same time the different parts may be assembled in their proper relationships before packing and shipping, in which latter operation the various members are safely and conveniently positioned. The means for securing the trim-members described gives a construction with con cealed fasteners, which may be readily and quickly assembled.
It is obvious that my invention is not strictly limited to the exact details of construction, or positions of parts shown, the breadth of my invention being measured by the scope of the appended claims.
Having now particularly described my invention, what claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. In a door casing, the combination of a buck member having rearwardly extending side flanges, an anchor adapted to extend horizontally into the wall between said flanges, and having flanged side portions positioned within and parallel to said side flanges, bolts extending through said side flanges and flanged side portions and nuts thereon, said anchor being adapted to hang from said bolts, entirely within said buck,
when said nuts are loosely adjusted on said bolts, substantially as set forth.
2. In a door casing, the combination of a buck member having rearwardly extending side flanges, and an anchor having a portion extending rearwardly between said flanges into the wall, a forward portion extending at right angles to said flanges, and flanges on said forward portion secured to said buck member side flanges, substantially as set forth.
3. In a door casing, the combination of a buck member having rearwardly extending side flanges, an anchor adapted to extend horizontally into the wall between said flanges, and having flanged side portions positioned within and parallel to said side flanges, bolts extending through said side flanges and flanged side portions and nuts thereon, and trimsecuring clips mounted on said bolts on the outer sides of said side flanges, said anchor and clips being adapted to hang from said bolts in line with said side flanges, when said nuts are loosely adjusted on said bolts, substantially as set forth.
4. In a door casing, the combination of a vertical frame member, horizontal straps on the outer side thereof in vertical alinement, with their ends bent outwardly to lie parallel to but spaced from said frame member, and a trim member having inturned flanges secured between the ends of said straps and said frame member, said inturned flanges having horizontal slots therethrough, through which said strap ends may pass when said trim member is positioned by a movement of said trim member toward said frame member, and said frame and trim members and straps being so shaped as to hold said trim member frictionally in position with said slots out of alinement with said strap ends, said trim member being moved vertically into such frictionallyheld position, substantially as set forth.
5. In a door casing, the combination of a buck member having rearwardly extending side flanges, a single bolt extending through one of said side flanges, having a nut thereon, and a trim-securing clip mounted on said bolt on the outer side of one of said side flanges, adapted to *extend horizontally, when said nut is tightened, with its central portion contacting said flange, an end portion extending beyond the rear edge of said flange and with an end portion spaced away from said flange, said clip being adapted to lie parallel to the length of said side flange, supported by said bolt, when positioned for shipping, substantially as set forth.
6. In a door casing, the combination of a buck member having rearwardly extending side flanges, an anchor adapted to extend horizontally into the Wall between said flanges, and having flanged side portions positioned within and parallel to said side flanges, bolts extending through said side flanges and flanged side portions and nuts thereon, and a pair of angular bars, each secured to the inner side of one of said side flanges by said bolts extending therethrough, and each having an angular extension at one side of the flanged side portion of said anchor, adapted to indicate the plane to which a Wall within the buck should be faced, substantially as set forth.
