UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS LOVEGROVE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELP` AND GEORGE H. MEYERS, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,030, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. LovEGRovE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have imented anew and useful Improvement in Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in the improvement of steam-boilers, as hereinafter fully described and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying; drawing, Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved boiler takenon the line x a* of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspon ding parts. y
A is the steam-drum- Bis the mud-drum. C represents a series or cluster (more or less in number) of bent tubes, which connect the steamdrum with mud-drum B. rlhese bent tubes are connected with the liattened tube-sheets of the drum, as seen in Fig. 1. D D are large water-pipes, by which the driuns are also con.- nected. These pipes are designed to be equal in capacity to the bent tubes U combined, and are for the purpose of returning the water from the steam-drum to the mud-drum. The boiler is placed at an inclination that will allow the sediment in the tubes to iow freely into the muddrum, which will give the upper portions of the tubes C an inclination of about forty-five degrees. Each of the generating-tubes C is provided with a chain, AE, which passes through it. In each drum is a crank-shaft, F, the journals of which are packed steam and water-tight in the ends of the drums. These chains are all attached to these crank-shafts, as seen in the drawing. Vhen these shafts are rocked by the attendant the chains will be drawn through the tubes, whicliwill loosen the sediment `and prevent the formation of scale in the tubes. This agitation may be produced every day, or as often as may be required.
Oleanin g steam-generating tubes of sediment, and thereby preventing the formation of scale, is a matter of the utmost importance, as fuel is not only saved but damage and danger are avoided. The exposure of a cluster of clean generating-tubes in this position to the action of the nre produces an active circulation of the water throughout the boiler. The heat is equalized and the full nre-surface is utilized.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentv l. In combination with bent connecting-tubes between va steam and mud-drum, the series of chains O, passed back and forth therethrough, as and for the purpose specified. I
2. A series of tubes, O, pipes D D having the same capacity as all the tubes, steam-drum A, and 1n iid-drum B, when combined as and for the" purpose specified.
Vitnesses: T. J. LOVEGROVE.
